    • 189: Steve Stewart (12th)
    • HWT: John Good (12th)
      • (was a state qualifier as a junior)

By the words of David Locke... this was the best team that Delta had in their dominating run in the 80s and there were some really good teams that followed. Guys that couldn't fit in lineup because they were behind state champs and the next year after they graduated they either won state themselves or were state placers. Example: John Ginther (wrestled varsity all year then lost to State Champ Heintzelman in wrestle off right before sectionals) Ginther went on to go 4th-1st-1st.

They tried to dual St, Paris Graham who was ranked #1 in country at time, but they didn't want to... finally convinced them to a few years later and beat them.

Years following this team they were ranked in the Top 5 in the country (and this team had 7 seniors in the lineup.

  6. Don Patton - Head Coach for Delta from 1976-1986

    Overall Record was 101-13

in his first two season as head coach they went 4-5 both years (10 of his 13 losses as a head coach came in his first two seasons)

Went on to coach 48 state qualifiers

    - 33 of those 48 we state placers

    - 13 of those were state champions

Also coached 5 Team State titles, 2nd Place finish, and a 4th Place finish

  7. Braxton Russell from Delta

Freshman year went 17-12 and was a regional qualifier at 160lbs

Sophomore year wrestled first tournament of year…. Found out he had two stress fractures in his back and probably wasn’t going to wrestle the rest of the year… had a remarkable recovery was able to come back in January and made a run during tournament series and became a IHSAA State Qualifier at 170lbs (lost Friday night to guy who got 5th) and finished season 21-6.

Now as a junior is 14-1 (loss is to the #3 ranked guy) and is currently ranked #13 at 170

  8. In year 2 here at Delta we are around 30 guys on the team... this number is up from last year! Getting more football players to grow interest in the sport! We even have a kid that was a starting offensive lineman for football team wrestle last year and talked about how it was one of the hardest sports he has ever done... and this year as a senior he came back out and will be the first to tell you that he does not like wrestling lol but because of what it did for him physically and mentally... said it was the best shape he had ever been in and wanted to get there again this year! And what's awesome is he got his buddy that is a senior offensive lineup to come try it this year with him and has been battling it out in the room! The growth from football team starting to join us is what will help us grow!

We have about 30+ kids on our middle school team

We have 70+ in our youth club and have a lot of young studs coming up that continue to get all their buddies to come wrestle! I think that is where it starts! Having fun and getting others to come join at the youth level!

Devon Adkins over Jake Petras and Kaeb Stebbins. Also hope Delta's state qualifier Braxton Russell is okay. Looked like he snapped his arm or dislocated it at the very least in his placement match. I think everyone that saw it could agree that it was very concerning.

Thank you! Braxton is doing well now! He did completely dislocate his elbow out of socket and was able to get in set back in once he got to the ER. We are glad it was nothing more with how bad it was at the moment!

Thanks to all who have reached out and checked in!

  10. Ayden Bollinger up 7-0 in the second period and pins Ocampo in the semis

Neal Mosier hits a standing Peterson with 12 seconds left in the match against undefeated Holloway to get two reversal and two near fall to win the match 10-8 and punch his ticket to state!

Braxton Russell is a sophomore and unranked, who missed half the season due to a stress fracture in his lower back, and gets 4th with a 4-0 loss to Buchanan and a 5-2 loss to Johnson (both ranked Top 10).
