I’m pretty sure hold backs happen every year for different reasons. Brownsburg and CP both considered the top two teams in the state and line up is filled with kids held back. Most of them I wouldn’t say afraid as wrestled across the country against top kids for many years. Most have competed at IHPO as youngest kid there or on dual teams . I can’t speak for everyone on their reasons just my opinion. But the rules of the state are have to be 19 or under to compete and know they all fall into tHat

I graduated at 17 and looking back, wish I would have started school later. It's a bad PR look to hold a kid back in middle school. Why not in 2nd grade? 5th grade? CookieMonster99
My son will be 17 his entire Senior year. We considered a hold back, but ultimately went ahead and sent him into high school anyway. He's currently a 14 year old freshman with a 22-11 record, Sectional Champ and Regional Runner-Up. Holding him back would have gained some competitive edge going into next season for sure. But we considered his maturity and intelligence and realized that holding him back would only stall his progress. We pushed him head first into the fire, and he is gaining valuable life lessons because of it. The adversity he is experiencing and overcoming will only help him in life after high school. datdude, navy80, badpta and 6 others
mdtodd
Indiana is slowly turning into Ohio in this matter. And I understand the rules of 19 and under but I have a Junior that could be held back twice and still meet that rule. Does that mean I should? He has kids who started in his grade now one or even two grades below him. That’s wild! And there’s no denying it will or does pay off in MS and HS but doesn’t always pay off in the off season or college. It’s just a weird approach to life. To each their own. That would be a question for everyone who has done it and I’m sure the answers would be different as everyone has a different situation. I have 3 kids one of started her senior year currently as a 16 year old and that was for different reasons also. I’m sure some are for grades, size, etc as list can go on. I also don’t think you can hold back in 3rd grade and say it’s for size as kids grow and different times. I’m sure a Bantam 60 pound bracket 6 years later will have kids who are barely 100 and some 180. CookieMonster99
tigrreapr56
There are 3 level to this: - kid is in school early (Graduate at 17) - kid is in school in the optimal grade (Graduate at 18) - kid is in school and can not repeat grade and compete (hold-back) (Graduate at 19) There are about 10 different variables that go into parents holding their kids back. Some parents weight variables higher than others! There is no right answer, but simply what is BEST for the kid! Every situation is different! In my situation, my son was put in school too early (category 1 on this list). In the 2nd grade he was doing poorly on the educational pillars (Math and Reading). So after winter break, we decided for him to be put back in the 1st grade putting him, using my verbiage, in the optimal grade. Optimal may not be the best term to use in this situation, just what i came up with. Again, every situation is different. As a parent who has worked in schools for over the last 24 years as a coach and/or staff member, I see parents (especially males) putting their kids in school later more than in the past. Best wishes to all! navy80, XCard, mdtodd and 5 others
