I agree about not wanting to be in the position to make that call, but I felt like Zain had reached a point of limited progression. Not that retherford wasn't continuing to work, but it appears Yanni makes it his move. Maybe the other angle shows it differently but from my estimation it was Yanni's points. That's always going to be an issue when so much is dependent on a referees opinion.

Definitely thought it was Zain's move. Yianni just wrapped the chest and went with it. The camera from the other side of the mat illustrates the sequence much clearer, IMO. Ultimately, the correct call was made. Sucks it's all become such a mess. No way in the world would I take on reffing a high level FS bout.

I like your picks with one exception. I'm going Bo in the surprise over Cox. (And I want to pick Retherford, but holy crap Yianni). My only other concern is Taylor's injury. I don't think anyone really knows how that will factor in (other than Taylor himself) right now.

I’m more concerned with Dake’s injury than Taylor’s. DT at less than100% should still beat Pat Downey, I cant say the same for a banged up Dake vs Dieringer.

Newman wrestled a Jasper kid in the finals at Big 8 conference
    1st period - Newman TD2, Jasper Kid E1, Newman TD2.
    2nd period - Jasper kid's choice. Defers. Newman takes Bottom - Newman R2 - Newman NF3 - Newman FALL
Just saying, if that Jasper kid was Milanes I wouldn't be betting your house on that upset BUT anything can happen.

It was completely uncovered before, and now Flo covers most events.  Not sure what there is to complain about here?  They arent going to send a crew to a tourney with travel expenses, equipment costs, etc for free.  The same reason the preseason rankings magazine isn't handed out for free by Joe. I feel lucky we have Flo.

    A couple thoughts.

1st -  He. His name is Mack, referring to him as she or her or worst of all "s/he" is just disrespectful.

2nd - I'm not sure it really matters whether or not he officially put in a petition to wrestle with the boys or not. He has stated he would rather wrestle with the boys but there is a rule against it. He is following the rules as they are written. The issue should be with the rule not with the kid that is following them.

3rd - It is not the place of a state athletic asocciation to decide what medication is "medically necessary", and it is definitely not the place for somebody on a message board to decide.  There are a lot of reasons that people choose to transition, but none of them have anything to do with wanting to win a girls state title. To say that he shouldn't be allowed to compete because he is taking hormone therapy, which is prescribed by a doctor, is insane. Forcing a transgender athlete to choose between living in a body that fits their mind or competeing in a sport they love is just plain cruel.

4th - I have a feeling texas will be taking a look at their rules after all of this and I hope that other states with similar rules do the same.  These rules need to be changed.

My wrestlers are trying to get me to bet that if most of the team signs up, I sign up. So far our off season #'s have went down the drain, so it looks like I'm safe from embarrassing myself on the mat.

It's the bottom man's job to get out. I like the riding time rule and find it completely absurd to ever hit the top man for stalling when both wrestlers are on the mat. I'm still not sure how I feel about the five count when the top man drops to a leg though.

A football team up 3 touchdowns goes into a prevent defense, and runs the ball to milk the clock when on offense.

A boxer/MMA fighter is clearly ahead on the judges scorecards dials it back in the later rounds of a fight.

A soccer team up 2 goals drops an extra player onto the defensive side of the field and plays keep away.

A basketball team will use more shot clock to lengthen their own possessions, thus limiting their opponents.

Stalling is essentially an acceptable "tactic" in other sports. Why not wrestling (not my personal opinion, just trying to spur conversation)?  The easy answer for stalling on the mat is to put them on their feet.

Hughes is an absolute animal on top. I personally like the riding time. If you can't score off bottom, can't score a takedown or ride someone out, your don't deserve to win.

Maybe instead of hitting the top man with a stalling the refs can call more frequent stalemates to reset both men, therefore giving the bottom guy a better chance to get out and the top guy his attempt to maintain position.
    Just a thought.

Another way to evaluate how well our talent is being evaluated is to look at college rankings and performance.

If we are being evaluated to have 9 kids in the top 20 of 14 weight classes, that means we should have roughly 6 or 7 kids in the top 20 of the 10 Division I weights.  (Or, if you want to include redshirts and other college levels, that we have 6 or 7 kids among the 20 best overall in the 10 college weights.)  Micic and Griffin are the only clear guys in that category, although arguments could be made for Hughes, Red, and Lefever if we extend to 20-best overall, including redshirts and all divisions. (And there are a handful of other guys in the top 40-50)

If we further think we're being overlooked in rankings even at the college level, then look at performance alone: 2 or 3 Division I all-americans would be equivalent to 9 high school kids being ranked, percentage-wise.  Again, Micic is a clear contender this year, Griffin has an outside shot, Lefever would be a contender if he were Division I and back down at 184, and a few others are very long shots. But that's about it. The most probable scenario is that we end up with 1 from among those.

My point is this: we'll get ranked more as we win more in the spring and summer and as we perform better in college. Right now, thinking we have a bunch of overlooked guys lacks a little perspective and diminishes the work that still needs to be done to grow the sport in Indiana and to improve opportunities for our best people in the off-season and in college.

He knew the new Sheriff was in town and didn't handle it the way he (AD) wanted. Personally I would have liked how J handled it to be the way given his tenure and reputation. However, with the way precedent has been set in our society, he should have complied. Especially when law enforcement was brought into it. I only compare it to Paterno since he was shielding his wrestlers. I don't condone what Paterno did, but have no problem with J's intentions. I just thought it was foolish since we see how similar cases have been handled. Unfortunately you have to follow the PC & PR rules today.
