  1. One small devil's advocate counterpoint to the idea that a tech is now too easy: Making techs and majors easier moves team scoring closer to representing actual difficulty of earning each type of win. Pins have always been rightfully worth more team points than a tech. However, tech falls have always been much better indicators of the superior wrestler. Upsets by tech don't exist. Rematch victories by someone who previously got teched are very, very rare. However, pins can happen in a variety of circumstances and are not always earned by the season-long best wrestler. What we saw in college was that tech falls were way up, but that a rematch could be a good match despite the first match having been a tech. This was not the case before. Related...close duals will now have points more accurately assigned to the deserving team. Before, a team could have 3 dominant wins totalling only 9 or 10 team points, while their opponent had 3 close wins but also got 9 points. Now, those dominant wins can rightfully be 12 or 13 points compared to the 9 for the close wins.

  2. In an 18-0 decision the IHSAA has moved forward with fully sanctioning girls wrestling as a varsity sport in Indiana. The sport was officially approved this afternoon after running as a separate event under the IHSGW since 2017 and two years under the IHSAA's Emerging Sport status. Indiana has been a training ground for many of the top women's wrestlers in the country with Olympians Sarah Hildebrandt and Kayla Miracle leading the way. Indiana has a strong tradition in women's wrestling and as a fully sanctioned sport it will continue to produce wrestlers with national and world level success. View full article

  5. The biggest potential issue I see is if the girls are limited with events like the boys. Currently there are 18 points allowed with a minimum 6 duals and a maximum of 6 tournaments(3 or more teams). Currently most teams don't have enough girls for a dual meet and the girls are better off going to "tournaments" in which there are 5+ teams there so everyone can get matches.

    Iran wrestling news

@Thor and @The Genius, I'm actually seeing a lot of people on other boards insisting DT would wrestle the Olympics as his last tournament if Brooks can't go. It seems insane to think of in the middle of the transfer portal, needing to move across the country and probably selling a couple of local businesses. ...and probably leaving his training camp. But people insist it would do so much for the notoriety of the Oklahoma State program that he'd do it. They say, "John Smith wrestled in the Olympics while coaching. Cael Sanderson made a freestyle comeback while coaching. Why can't DT?" I hear them, but in this day and age of 24/7/365 recruiting and training demands for D1 coaches--seems crazy. To be his best, he needs 6+ hours per day for training, eating, and recovery activities and 8-9 hours of sleep. He then uses 9-10 hours per day for a big-time D1 coaching job, plus family, business, moving, travel, media appearances, etc, with none of the downtime that a high-level athlete's mind needs in preparing for an elite event? Let me be the first to predict DT doesn't get gold if he is our rep.

  15. Super super pumped for our young ladies! any idea when we’ll get info for scheduling requirements (number of duals vs tourneys, etc;) or state tourney info? Wanna ensure I have enough staff and am scheduling our girls against the correct competition to prepare them for their state series. Related: I need more assistant coaches! Hit me up!

  16. As for the Super Bowl, absolutely fine with me. Currently I have President's Day off but curious to see if that remains, especially if Goodell gets it accomplished. I'm good having wrestling state finals Friday & Saturday and then probably a youth wrestling tournament Sunday morning to afternoon followed up by a Super Bowl party that night. Definitely need that extra day of rest. Is that also the Daytona 500 time line too? Might catch the end before the Super Bowl.

  17. Don't see the SuperBowl coming back to Indy any time soon. They are already scheduled through at least 2027 and with some new stadiums popping up (Nashville) they will get to host before Indy does.

  21. Can we talk about Peyton Schoettle for just a minute? He placed 8th at U17 51 kg… blood round match was against Shamus Regan… and beat him 7-6. Oh, not sure who he is? Just a Fargo National Champion and a prep National Champion. Beyond that, just a ridiculous resume of accomplishments. This young man is doing big things… total stud!

  23. I feel it's going to lead to what I call a freestyle mindset in folkstyle. Say Wrestler A is great on his/her feet but not as good on the mat. Wrestler A gets a takedown but it's not likely leading to near fall. Wrestler A is going to cut right away and smartly so. What used to be a 4-2 lead is now 6-2. Guessing choice is going to be more neutral than top & bottom. I felt mat wrestling was a great equalizer for those not as good on their feet. In that prior example, if the other wrestler down 4-2 gets choice & gets a reversal, we are tied. Instead down 2. Just feel it will lead to less mat wrestling & more neutral to avoid mat wrestling. If they make options for period 2 top, bottom or defer and period 3 just top & bottom, then I'd be ok with it.

  24. Stalling is a judgement call and hard to have interpreted the same across the state or even country. NCAA referees work diligently to keep things as uniform as possible and we still have great variations in the way some call stalling. As much as you want to clamor about rules for stalling they will always leave a lot of room for interpretation from all refs.

  25. Rules are rules and whatever they are we’ll figure em out. The only thing that bugs me, is that a turn can be less than a takedown (2 v 3), and that doesn’t really make sense in any style of wrestling, as near falls are semantically the second best thing in a wrestling match that has falls.

    NFHS rule changes

Anyone see or hear about this?
    1 point
  27. Big changes are coming to high school wrestling this season. Over the past ten years the collegiate folkstyle rules have become almost a different sport with out of bound stalling, what determines out of bounds, and this past year the three point takedown. While many were clamoring for the college out of bounds rules with only one supporting point determining being in bounds it was repeatedly shot down by the NFHS due to mat and gym size concerns. This year though, the NFHS has decided that it is time to implement the one supporting point criteria for high school wrestling. While making the wrestling area a little bigger this rule will make it easier for referees to focus on the action instead of checking for the proper amount of supporting points of the wrestlers. On top of that change the NFHS has approved the popular three-point takedown. This year at the NCAA level they went to a three-point takedown. Many people were cautious, but also excited about that big change. After the NCAA season concluded many felt that the three-point takedown was a huge success. If these two big changes aren’t enough for you, the NFHS has also aligned with the NCAA level with adding a four-point nearfall. After four seconds on your back the offensive wrestler will now be awarded four points instead of taking five seconds to earn only three points. This was implemented in the NCAA since 2015 and last year they updated the rule to allow two points for two seconds, three points for three seconds, and four points for four seconds or more. The NFHS will follow the NCAA and implement all three scenarios for nearfall. Other rule changes include a clarification of the Technical Fall criteria and not requiring a 10-foot circle on the wrestling mat. Here is the NFHS article on the changes https://www.nfhs.org/articles/participants-now-inbounds-with-one-point-of-contact-in-high-school-wrestling/ NFHS Article.pdf
