  1. This past weekend I attended the ISWA event at Warren Central. I wasn't gonna do a review, but I had more than a few denizens of the Indiana wrestling scene ask me to do one. So, here I am. First, I'm not sure if these are the hot dogs that Warren usually sells, or if these are from an ISWA contracted vendor. Anyways, at first glance, the hot dog did not look appealing. It looked plucked right out of the movie "Nothing but Trouble" that starred Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, and the late, great John Candy(who pulled double duty). I was ready to put buying this hot dog into my worst decisions of my life category, which includes getting married, accepting the Clockwork Orange therapy to avoid a curfew ticket, and eating a hot dog from Hanover Central. Fortunately, it wasn't that bad. It wasn't good, but, it was at least two steps above Alpo. 3 slices of pizza outta 8 Next weekend I'm going to Iowa, and on St Patrick's day, I'll be at Mooresville highschool. Hopefully the luck o' Irish will strike and the hot dog gods will gift me another outstanding experience at the home of the Pioneers. Thank you for reading.

  3. In case you missed it on X or the college thread: Christian Mejia from Elkhart Memorial, Derek Blubaugh from Bloomington South, and Shawn Streck from Merrillville all picked up D2 national titles last night. Mejia had finished 5th twice before, was seeded only 3rd, and was in his final year of eligibility. Blubaugh had twice been national runner-up to his finals opponent, and had lost to him 5-0 two weeks ago, but finally got over the hump. Streck picked up his second consecutive title. Congrats, guys!!

  4. Hey there everyone! Pardon the 3rd person description, I just wanted to give you a heads up that I will be covering the USA Wrestling Olympic Trials at Penn State. I'm briefly stepping out of retirement to attend the Trials as an approved media member and I wanted to give folks an opportunity to suggest/request questions I can ask the athletes participating, particularly those with Indiana ties. I haven't done this in the past, but what the heck! I'll have more information and articles to come, but please feel free to shoot me question ideas, even if they are ridiculous Thank you and I look forward to sharing this journey with anyone interested.

  5. It was a great day at Mooresville for Indiana Wrestling. One high light for me was the amount of team members both boys and girls who came up to me and thanked me for having them on the team and how much they appreciated the opportunity to compete one more time. We really are producing some great wrestlers in our state and more importantly these kids have a lot of class and respect. Indiana Gold boys battled hard but came up short 37-22. Winners for the gold team were; Mason Jones Luke Rioux Tony Wood Chis Bohn Duke Myers Indiana Blue sealed a victory for our home state 35-27. Winners were: Gavyn Whitehead Griffin Sanders Carson Fettig Michael Cain Keegan Martin Tyler Schott Brady Byrd Josiah Dedeaux The girls beat Iowa 63-12, but came up short against Illinois 21-44 Double Winners for the girls were: Tola Aluka Sophia Buechner Rose Kaplan Leila Thomas Winner vs Iowa were; Tola Aluka Sophia Buechner Rose Kaplan Leila Thomas Kyra Tomlison Alexes Spaulding Kaylea Beauchamp Jaiah O'Neal Michela Clifford Portia Weaver

  10. Gotta be one of the first college signees ever from Indiana whose team didn't have a spot for him in the sectional lineup--and he's going to a D1 school. Nuts!! He's a beast. He deserves it.

  12. Nice after season event. And the even better thing is the person and people that put in the time to tackle the event,And produce a great organized production. The first one that I’ve been to in a while. Ladies added makes for lots of pre production organization. Good job. Hope it continues.

  13. WOW! Christian Mejia! He comes in as the 3-seed, having lost only to the top two seeds during the year. Facing the 2-seed, who beat him 9-2 during the year, he hips into a high-c attempt and takes him to his back for the pin only a minute into the match!! He's been on the podium twice before, and now he gets his shot for a title tonight! He'll face the 4-seed, who took out the top seed, and who was the runner-up at this event last year.

  16. I actually feel like a lot of good things are happening off the mat. This weekend was high emotion, and that breeds tension. I saw kids that were finished staying to watch placement matches. Many of these kids weren’t from the same school, club, region or semi-state. I saw kids that don’t know each other talk and interact and support each other. I saw parents hug their kids and tell them how proud they were. I saw coaches tell a kid how much they’ve grown. I would argue there is more of that than the opposite. Bad things get a lot of attention, but I think we should focus on all of the good stuff instead. The future is bright in Indiana for wrestling. This tournament seems to get tougher every year, and that’s awesome.

  17. If we want to dig even deeper into this point: I think our whole culture teaches us that being happy is the meaning of life. Which is all well and good. But the way happiness is defined nowadays has evolved into this: "obsessively chase what you think should be yours so you can be happy for you." That's a counterfeit happiness--it's a rigid individualism and potentially narcissism. True happiness doesn't happen on an island. It happens in relationships and in respect of community. Relationships involve self-sacrifice--the opposite of "get mine for me." As a parent, I'm trying to learn better how to teach "chase your dreams" in a way that also involves celebrating others' successes. It's tough to do!!

  18. You can see it in the schools as well, parents coming in a cussing out teachers and principals right in front of the student. Parents are not trying to be parents anymore, in my opinion, but they rather be best friends with their kids.

  19. We, as adults talk about the "younger generation" and the lack of respect and accountability, and then we have people that act like this with no consequence. The mystery as to why these kids act this way is not hard to solve, in my opinion. If you want your kids to act and carry themselves in a particular manner, you must model what that looks like when things don't go your way. Kids only know what they're taught and seeing the way some "coaches" and parents carry themselves, those aren't the lessons I want to teach my young people.

But in Vito's case his only 2 losses are to undefeated & 2nd seeded Ryan Crookham. Yet he is seeded behind Orine, Shawver & Ragusin who all have 2 or more losses as well & to lower ranked guys. I understand him being ranked behind Fix & Crookham but not the other three. Carr's 4 seed makes sense given O'Toole & Mesenbrink are undefeated & he lost to Ramirez.

  26. Ill point out that the bad news always gets more attention, so this isn't necessarily so. In my interactions, 99% of the time I see good sportsmanship, good behavior and people enjoying the sport. Just like our news, the negative makes a good story, but it sure doesnt mean that its the norm. Ive been around wrestling for years, and crazy ***potty mouth*** has always happened. Not sure what happened in the IHSAA event, but maybe handled wrong, but the IHSAA doesnt look kindly on stuff described. Im sure this was investigated and acted on. Guns are so prevalent, people love them, but still this is an anomaly. On the ISWa tournament, there was a lot of brotherly wrestling love this weekend. 99% of people were great, appreciative and enjoying themselves. Its like a giant wrestling reunion. Yes, there was some incidents from passionate people whose behavior could have been better. But I dont think the original poster knows the full circumstances of the situation described. I say look at all the good this weekend, kids of all ages learning sportsmanship, making friends enjoying competing. It overshadows any negative, and that crazy behavior is not anything new. Always some bad apples.

  33. And Derek Blubaugh! He heads to his 3rd straight National Championship match at 197 with a heart-stopping last-second takedown and victory. He's lost the final 6-0 and 1-0 the last two years to #1 Dalton Abney of C. Oklahoma. Very sadly, that's his only D2 loss this season (5-0) and his opponent in the finals. Derek's a beast. He's got a couple D1 wins to his credit this year to go with the 2-time runner-up credentials. Here's hoping he can finally get over the hump and get the upset!! And Shawn Streck follows suit and joins the Indiana procession into the finals. He continues a dominating tournament with a 13-4 win the semi's. He'll look to repeat as national champion tonight at 285. He'll go in as the favorite against his 4th-seeded opponent.

Agreed. Anything that puts him in the bottom bracket. Lewis now is robbed of the benefit that the 1 seed is supposed to provide, the easiest path, he would have been far better off as the 2. Sure, you have to beat everybody, but shouldn’t have to face the guy everyone knows is the best until the final. They factored in everything but common sense.
