Why are we comparing ourselves to Kentucky? If we want a real gauge we need to beat the best from Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, etc.

You can't just pin the Mater Dei tradition on their high school coaches. They have MANY former wrestlers that coach the youth kids at their elementaries and such. You'd have to uproot quite a few people. The Mater Dei program is a well oiled machine that pumps out top wrestlers year after year.

As with any top program there are too many people to name that are the reasons for their success.

Didn't do anything to my butt.  I just think Jr. High is Jr. High and in a time when there's a lot of chest thumping and big egos...suggesting a 13 year old would place with 17-18 year olds, serves no good purpose.  I know a few high schoolers who got their priorities screwed up by reading their rankings too often.  Jr. High kids will have their day, but the less publicity at a young age, the better.  I feel the same about comparing High School wrestlers to Big Ten wrestlers.  Wait until they are in the college room and deserve/have earned that conversation.  Just my opinion, since you asked.  If Reiser and I were talking in person, it would be different, but saying on here that a JH kid is good enough to place in HS, when there are tons of hard working HS kids who lost in the ticket round or before...kinda slaps them in the face, as well as puffs up the JH kid unnecessarily.

Since no one is coming to the defense of Austin Bethel, it looks like I will...

1st point- The injury time was due to a medical condition that Austin has struggled with for 4 years. It is a huge accomplishment that he has been able to continue to compete when after his freshman year it was thought he would never wrestle again. The injury stoppage was MY call to check on the health of MY wrestler. I will not comment any further due to confidentiality.

2nd point- We used ALL of our injury time so that we would not stop the match again. If we had to stop again, we would have defaulted the match. We, Mt. Vernon, do not win that way. We do not break rules or take dives to win matches.

3rd point- The two stoppages AFTER the injury time were due to blood time. That is not on myself or Austin. The official saw it and HAS to stop the match to tend to the blood issue. If anyone watched Ripple's match with Henson, we were on the unfortunate end of that blood time...and we are not complaining about that nor would we be had we lost.

4th point- As to the remarks on his conditioning...I invite you to come watch our running, swimming, and live sessions and ask you to see who goes the hardest, the longest. Austin is in great shape and many don't see that due to his style of getting pins early in matches. For the record, he had Cooper pretty close to pinned (if not pinned) 3 times in the first period. Had that call happened, like it should have, this post would not exist.

Lastly- Neither Austin, the ref, or myself broke any rules during this match. It gets under MY skin that anyone would take a shot at a kid like this. This senior deserved his chance to finish the match even if it was on one leg. We are proud of Austin and all of his accomplishments. He became the FIRST wrestler in our school's history to qualify for state 4 times! That is what I will take away from this weekend and that is worthy of praise, not criticism.

Congrats Austin & Wade!! You guys make MV proud!!

    Y2,
I respectfully ask that this post be haulted before it takes any turns for the worse. I know people are entitled to their opinion, but I think this week leading up to the state finals should positively focused on the kids.

While I completely agree with you that the way Black went about the whole biting situation was correct and fair , I lost some respect in seeing him throw Rumph into the scorers table. While he may have seemed concerned after the fact, there is no doubt in my mind that it was intentional and that he only seemed "concerned" for Rumph's health because he realized he may have just caused himself a point or even the match.

I'm not sure I see why this is a problem. In the end, the goal is to get the JV kids as many matches as possible, right? If they're good enough to be competitive against starters from another school, why not give them a shot? I know when I was an underclassmen, we had some solid JV kids who likely could've been starting at many of the nearby schools.

Let's put the shoe on the other foot now. We all know that the top 10% has JV kids that could go deep into the state series. What good does it do for them to go to a regular JV meet and throttle JV kids? That isn't going to help the sport either is it?

Mater Dei has sent their JV to a small tournament we go to the past three years and have won it each year with several champions.  All the teams that attend would be 1,2, and 3A in football and most don't have a full lineup.  Years ago, Mater Dei had a state placer on JV...maybe Nosko? or around the time he was in school.

Anyways, I think sending JV teams to tournaments is a great idea.  Instead of a bye or FF, now that spot is filled with a wrestler.  The JV teams of the top 10% can beat the Varisty teams of the bottom...20-40% of teams.  It also gives the JV kids a chance to say, "hey maybe I can't win a varsity spot for Carmel, but I just won a championship in a varsity tournament with 16 teams".

Hughes is an absolute animal on top. I personally like the riding time. If you can't score off bottom, can't score a takedown or ride someone out, your don't deserve to win.

As you are preparing for regionals this week, good luck to every wrestler still competing. Congrats on your sectional success and to all the wrestlers that didn't make it through sectionals, Congrats on your great season, keep training hard for next year. As you wrestlers are training for regionals, you all have different goals, but at the end of the day, you all have the same opportunity to achieve an amazing thing. Top four at regional advancing to semi state. Keep in mind when you are training and competing how many would trade you to take your place, how many want the opportunity you have. Even if you don't finish this season where you wanted to or even if you do, win with dignity, and loose with humanity, i heard that saying from a snider fan the other day. Its a great saying to listen to. Not everyone gets to wrestle varsity, not everyone makes it out of sectionals, and some never get the opportunity to wrestle at the bank. That doesn't take away from the hard work and dedication they put into the sport. If you are competing this weekend good luck, Fly the W, and be proud. Not many get the opportunity. Its the greatest sport known to man and woman, the most grueling of them all, be proud to wrestle this weekend and thank your parents, coaches, teammates, and anyone else who has supported you and pushed you and made you better. Stay safe and healthy, wrestle tough, its anyones match on saturday morning.
