I have thought exactly this for a long time. Take these next couple days and focus on your family. They deserve you. Thank you and Merry Christmas you fellow psychopaths.

  2. No harm, my son is done wrestling, but i remember my son's Sr year and an injury he had. He had to sit a holiday tournament. I might have been a little crazy back then. It gets emotional when you have a lot invested like that and have goals. I just say look at the big picture, and make the smart decision.

  3. This is 100 percent correct. Sit a few weeks. It sucks, but it will be worth it in the end if he plans on making a run in the tourney. Probably would go if it wasn't his big toe. Best of luck to your boy.

  4. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas. To those of you that are still involved in competition, coach parent or wrestler. Good luck and stay healthy.. About 4 weeks to the state tournament series. Got to love it.

When your 7yr old son says “ how can you go coach everyone else, but can’t come coach me….” That hits hard!!! 100% reason I stepped away from HS sports a couple of years ago. Family first!

  6. What’s his goal. Win or place in a holiday tourney and possibly injure it further. Or advance as far in the state series as his talent will take him. I’m assuming you took him to seek medical attention. If not I recommend it. Sometimes it best to rest and fight another day.

  7. Rochester bumped their 138- Basham up to 144. Rodriguez (WC) won by fall. Rochester bumped their 144 - Schott up to 150. WC’s 150 - Ezra Rodriguez fought off his back for over a minute to end the first period and trailed 5-0 going into the 2nd. Got the fall in the 2nd to seal the dual.

  8. Impressive win by West Central any way you look at it . Rochester is a solid team with a win over defending 3A champ Mishawaka.

  9. Not sure if Rochester was missing any but west central has always been a sleeper 1A program and prob one of the smallest 1A schools in indiana. Coach Kenny Nielsen has been head of that program for a very long time and his asst. Nathan Williams wrestled for wc and now coaching and have got the youth program moving with the help of the fritz family! They have 2 seniors whom are twins Drake and hayden fritz that have both been state qualifiers and very talented kids. This tiny school could be a consistent top program in 1A but typically struggles to completely fill roster. Graduating class prob around 45 or so. The coaches here do a tremendous job!

I was only a volunteer coach when I did help out. My wife would ask why I was willing to not only get to the room every day, but why I would get up at 4am every saturday for months. I would just shrug my shoulders and show her a video of one of the kids face with their hand raised.

  11. Nothing. He needs time to heal. Sectionals > than a holiday tourney.

  14. Since it involves the big toe, taping is not likely to do much good. I would strongly recommend consultation with a podiatrist or orthopedic surgeon as nonunion could lead to long term consequences. Most such injuries would be treated with a rigid platform shoe, which shows how seriously medical professionals view such injuries. I am sorry to hear of your son's injury and wish him well.

I believe the area has coaches who are involved in their programs from Elementary through High School. This builds a culture and kids by into the system.

  19. I'm not sure what the actual attendance was, but there had to be 2500 fans or more at the Bellmont - Adams Central Dual last night. They delayed the start of the JV matches by half an hour because of the long line of fans waiting to get in. It was a great atmosphere and the fans weren't disappointed. The teams split the matches 7-7 and Bellmont won on bonus points 38-32. Thanks to Nat Bryan for taking this picture of the crowd.

Who were your losses to? It was a quality loss. Wrong kid/different kid. We beat him at the IHPO.

  22. Last night was the final wrestling event to be held at Munster this season. And, on a personal note, it went out with a bang with CJ bumping up to 165 to take on Mavros of Lowell. It was a tremendous match. Even better, Munster opened the concession stand for this event. First thing, the hot dogs from last night were definitely a different brand or style from Saturdays super duals. They weren't as plump as the first time, but had the desired reddish color I appreciate. They also came in these "bags", and weren't just wrapped in foil. As far as the taste, they were. Nothing spectacular, but enjoyable. I did prefer these dogs to the ones from the super duals. So, the hot dogs from last night get 5.25 slices of pizza out of 8. Next stop on the tour is the Mooresville holiday tournament that starts a week from today. CJ, my son, just told me he will be wrestling at 150, so maybe keep an eye out for that. As always, thank you for reading.

    No stall warning

Not sure how long you have been coaching or if you are a coach, but I can tell you over the years, my opinions on things have been shaped by my experiences. About 10 years ago I had a senior that made it to the ticket round and had only 1 loss before then. This board had some posters that were talking about how he was overrated and would get beat in that match. He wanted to prove them wrong and he was wrestling his heart out and was up by 4 with about 30 seconds left. Their coaches and fans kept yelling that my kid was stalling, so he pressured forward and did a knee tap and then got headlocked and lost by a point. If I had a time machine and could go back and tell my kid to use the stall calls he still had, I would do it in a heartbeat. Now I coach to those situations and have that as an example. Thankfully that kid has turned into a great person and coach that I work with on the regular. And yes some jerk had the nerve to make a comment about how they were right after that match was over. I personally no longer care at all about what other coaches, wrestlers, or fans think in those situations. If my kid has earned the right to hold a position. We are going to hold a position.

    No stall warning

Stalling is a very subjective call. There is not enough criteria to determine stalling in specific positions. From an official's viewpoint, we should transition to college rules for stalling. (i.e. backing up straight out of the circle) Another call that grinds my gears is stalling on top. Earlier this year, we had a leg rider beat this kid up for almost 5 minutes. Couldn't turn him because the athlete was stubborn on bottom. Not a problem. However, with 20 seconds left, the official calls our kid for stalling on top. The call where top wrestler doesn't come off the hips, though he had a leg in and was trying to power half. That gave the bottom wrestler one more free chance to get a reversal after the reset and win the match. On the other hand, if the referee didn't call stalling, our athlete would have won a tight match by keeping the athlete on bottom. Not to mention the athlete on bottom was not warned, though he couldn't get up for nearly 5 minutes. Stalling needs to be more precise on how it is called, interpreted, and in which times it is necessary. Officials put themselves in the match when they calling stalling in these specific situations. Let the wrestlers decide.

  26. I have the "act like we've been here before" convo ~once a year after the 'ol beat a JV kid and flex on them happens. I can't speak to the state title celebration... but when that .500 kid avenges a loss and books a trip to regionals... bottle that energy up and sell it.
