An Indiana Wrestling Fan's Guide to the Walsh Jesuit Ironman

Recommended Posts

What you Need to Know Before Day 2 of the Ironman:

106: Dickman opens up the day against an unseeded opponent in Alexander Williams of Olentangy Liberty. Williams, although unseeded, did upset 6th seed and #16 Leo Pezone, before falling to 11th seed Rylan Seacrist of Brecksville. Per the seeding, Dickman is still the favorite, but Williams' opening round should be an indicator that this match will be close. After this match, Dickman faces off against 8th seed Aydan Thomas of Stillwater, which should be a little bit more difficult of a match, with Thomas' only loss of the tourney being a 4-0 loss against 1st seed and #3 Tyler DeKraker. Two tough matches are in between Dickman and a podium finish at the Ironman.

113: No wrestlers alive.

120: Hockaday faces off against 14th seed and Penn State commit Cael Nasdeo. Ashton Jackson wrestled Nasdeo in the off season, and won an overtime bout, so this match is not only what puts Hockaday in the bloodround, but is also a great opponent for us to see how Hockaday might match up against Jackson in their future matchup at the state tournament. After Nasdeo, Hockaday has to wrestle another Raney brother in 4th seed and #3 Jordyn Raney. If the Raney brothers wrestle the same (which could be true, but may be an unfair statement to make) then Hockaday should feel good about his chances to pull the upset.

126: As a quarterfinalist, Logan Frazier is thrown into the bloodround immediately upon his appearance in the consolation, which I should add was done only by the 1st seed and #2 Ben Davino. Frazier is projected to meetup against 7th seed and #16 JJ McComas, a wrestler that has historically given Frazier some trouble in the past. Can Frazier finally get over the hump and defeat McComas to make the podium?

132: No wrestlers alive.

138: No wrestlers alive.

144: No wrestlers alive.

150: No wrestlers alive.

157: The sole semifinalist for Indiana, Anthony Rinehart has been going on a tear, defeating 3rd seed and #14 Paul Ognissanti of Blair Academy in the quarterfinals. Next, he will have 2nd seed and #6 Ethan Stiles. There's no telling how this matchup will go, but there's no point in naming Stiles as the favorite, especially after Rinehart's controlling quarterfinals match, so we'll see what happens from here. Rinehart is already guaranteed a 6th place finish, but I think that a finals appearance is definitely possible here.

165: After a quarterfinals setback, Goin will be put in the bloodround, where he is projected to matchup against 11th seed Duncan Christensen of Malvern Prep, and is the heavy favorite to win this bout as the 4th seed and #9 in the country. I still believe that despite a setback, Goin can wrestle his way back to third.

175: After an early loss to a Blair Academy wrestler, Goodwin is still alive in the consolations. His opening match of the day will be against 10th seed Andrew Filip of Minisink Valley. Filip has no results in this tourney thus far that indicate that he will present a massive struggle against Goodwin, so look for Goodwin to steal this match away from the slightly higher seeded opponent. His bloodround match will be against the opponent one seed higher in 9th seed Myles Takats of Perrysburg. Takats had a slight upset in the round of 16 in 8th seed and #20 Dylan Newsome, before falling 11-5 to 1st seed and #1 Rocco Welsh. I think that this match will be considerably harder for Goodwin to overcome, but certainly not undefeatable by any means, given some of Goodwin's past matches.

190: After losing 5-1 to 3rd seed and #8 Camden McDaniel, Cruz is in the bloodround, with an unseeded opponent stepping on the line to face him. Meridan's Carson Gooley is one of Cruz's potential opponents. Gooley is coming off of an upset against 13th seed Westin Hoffschneider of Ponderosa. Cruz's other potential opponent is Edmond North's Isaac Villalobos, who upset 12th seed Jack Lesher of Marmion Academy. Regardless of who Cruz wrestles in the bloodround, he will be the heavy favorite to move on into the placement rounds.

215: After an upset over 7th seed Oscar Williams in the round of 16, Will Clark puts himself in the bloodround. His projected opponent for this bloodround match is 12th seed Brennan Carey of Nixa, and given his upset over the 7th seed earlier in the tournament, and his own 10th seed, he should be considered the favorite in this match.

285: Paul Clark has been going on a run, taking out 6th seed and #11 Austin Foye, and looking close to an upset over 3rd seed and #7 Matthew Moore before an unfortunate pin in the last 30 seconds of the quarterfinal bout. With a medical forfeit from 9th seed Todd Allen of Buckeye, Clark will instead wrestle 16th seed Lucas Stuerenburg of Archbishop Moeller, who he should be the heavy favorite against. Just above Clark in the bracket is Leighton Jones, who also finds himself in the bloodround, after a medical forfeit from 13th seed Joey Thurston of Teays Valley. Jones' bloodround opponent will be 7th seed Aaron Ries of Wadsworth, who wrestled a competitive 7-5 match against 2nd seed and #4 Parker Ferrell. Should Jones win this bout, along with Paul Clark winning his bloodround match, we will not only have two Indiana heavyweights in the top 8, but we will have the sole Indiana vs. Indiana bout of the Ironman tournament, and should be an excellent match to preview what's to come in February.

Crown Point and Brownsburg kids went and competed. All came away with at least one loss, most two, some three... They weren't afraid to go compete against the best in the country. Now, for the next two months +, there will be multiple "someone(s)" on the board talking about so and so who is undefeated vs. a red or purple bulldog with a loss or two incurred at this event... biting my tongue now...

Blair Academy, Wyoming Seminary, Bethlehem Catholic,  Stillwater, St. Ed's, Bishop McCort, Walsh Jesuit, St. Paris Graham, Malvern Prep, etc., etc. This tournament had THE BIG NAMES in prep/hs wrestling there... There were D1 college coaches in abundance. Great to see Indiana participate and have some placers but will be something else at another level to have a champion... Interested to see Joe's take on it during this week's shows...
