I don't think he's directly comparing it to size he's comparing the disadvantage. The idea that someone that is 5'3" competing in the NBA is similar to some one coming from a small school and being has accomplished as Allred. The both over come obstacles and it's not common for this 2 situations happen and you can't say that just anyone can accomplish these task. At least that's how I read it and maybe I'm wrong. The point is Allred's accomplishments are out of this world and a testament of his hard work and not just anybody can duplicate what he has done.

I understand there's coaches that abuse the rules but do we really this it's necessary to punish kids and that don't abuse it? I've had kids (in none DQ situations) Hit there head injury default be cause either a trainer wasn't there to check on the situation or the trainer need more time so injury time runs out and the default. once the trainer was able to give a full evaluation allow the kid to wrestle. The number one concern should be safety. Creating a rule like this with cause coaches and wrestlers to put safety aside and force wrestling even if they shouldn't just to not default the next match. The point should be for a wrestler not do an illegal move. I teach my wrestlers not to put the match in the refs hands. Part of that includes avoiding illegal moves. I understand bad calls are made and some coaches take advantage of the rules but once again I don't think we should punish those that don't do this or the illegal move is the correct call. Refs say in most coaches meaning that safety is a priority and I think it should be. Once again this is where there should always be medical staff to help make these decisions.

Many wrestlers and coaches take advantage of the injury (time-out) rule.  This is much more of a problem than the injury default situation.  You can't tell a kid that he can't take injury time, even when it is very obvious, he's not injured, just tired.  At some point, you must trust the integrity of the coaches and wrestlers, and sometimes the athlete, and more importantly, the adults in the situation, are not teaching and displaying it.

I assume not many of us are doctors or in the medical field. For that reason I don't believe we should be the ones determining if someone can wrestle or not after being injured or injury default. I have heard trainers or on site doctors say "Ice it and see how it feels" pain can heel and go away in time. Tournaments like state you may have 2 hours or more in between matches that is enough time feel better. With a Head injury it takes time to determine if one has a concussion sometimes more time then whats allowed during a match. Medical personal may have time after the default to make a better decision. The point is it should be up to someone with a medical back round to decide whether someone can continue a match or even continue wrestling after a default not Refs, coaches, parents, or fans.

The issue I see is in season scheduling. I know you top programs wrestle top programs not matter what so it won't affect them but I know I worked our schedule to fit in our regional opponents and it would complicate things if we were always changing regionals.

Once again for your better programs this isn't as big of a deal but for the programs where semisate qualifiers is big accomplishment it helps to be familiar with the other teams that feed in. As stated above it can also help with common opponents in event of injuries and round Robin situations. And maybe I'm just looking out for what's but for my program.

I'm pretty sure nick lee wanted to win state and that was his only goal. I'm sure most wrestlers at that level has the goal of winning state... if there goal is to finish 2nd I would make a bet it's so that can wrestle under the lights not be the second best wrestler. If the concern is placement accuracy why not do a true 4th,6th,or 8th I'm sure those placements are affected as well.

bbulldog152 got a reaction from Coach Nieman in Scratch Weight
Not to mentioned he had the whole month of January to make scratch. I had a year where a wrestler didn't make a qualifying scratch weight until the last meet of the year... We got to weigh-ins and he weighed 106.1(was trying to go 106) we asked the ref if we could challenge on a different scale and the ref looked at us like we were dumb and reminded us he had 2 pounds. We explained what was going on and at first he wasn't going to allow it but an other ref stepped in and said it was ok and the kid made 105.9 on an other scale and that was his scratch last weigh-in of the season. The point is there shouldn't be an excuse for making scratch unless it's a state known thing. We did everything we could cause as far as we knew there was no waiver. If there was we should have known about it in advance. Not that I think there should be one for making scratch weight but if there was every coach should know of it.

All classed sports allow competition between teams from different classes during the regular season so why would wrestling have to be different. I'm not 100 percent sure with other states but I'm sure they don't restrict who faces who during regular season.

I also used to be a supporter of single class. With me the concern was all about the short term impact. Things like the transition and "lessening" the value of qualifying state or winning a state champ. Things that are all fan prospectives. I wasn't looking at long term affect until recently after almost 10 years of coaching. I think that is what happens with most single class supporters. Yes the change from single to 2 or 3 may seem to cheapen things at first but once class gets going we'll see numbers grow and more excitement some of the smaller schools. Sports like football, basketball,  and baseball are going to get their numbers. We at a sport need to do what we can to get numbers. Not to mention more state champs will lead to more recruitments. Yes I understand there's other factors in recruitment accomplishments matter as well.

Yes this is very frustrating. Last year we had a wrestler that was 6.9% and .1 over a weight class and couldn't go down. But we had an other that was 7.1% and was able to drop over a pound with a parent signature.

Our team would increase the number of forfeits in most years considering you're adding a bigger weight. Also the theres a lot of 106s are struggling to make 100 and I don't see that considering most 113 pounders are already cutting to get there that they would continue to cut to make 110. I think 14 weight classes is perfect. I also don't see the point of having 3 weight classes above 200 considering there's only 1 in college.  This is all just opinion.

I've been told that he doesn't plan on playing football. Now I'm sure that could always change. Regardless he weighed 218-219 most matches, I've been told his natural weight during football was 230 but all weight loss to 220 was pretty natural. In High school Parris has never cut weight. He may have in middle school but that I can't confirm. A lot will depend what the coaches want. My understanding is he was recruited to wrestle 285 for Michigan so I assume thats the plan. I'm sure he can easily come to campus around 240+ he's a hard worker so I'm sure he'll go what ever weight is best for him.

I'm pretty sure this was 2002 so sectionals would have been only 2 matches... I believe they went to team regionals if they made the finals that would be 2 more, 3 for regionals, and 3 for semi state. That would be 10-0 going into Friday night.

The sad part is there are fans that wait in lines for hours just like others and get to the seats to find 2-3 people in front of them saving seats for 15+ people who's probably aren't even in Indy yet. There for people that got in line before 4 have to sit in none preferred seats while preferred seats go empty until the parade of champions sometimes later. This is the problem most people are speaking over. I agree with you the ones that get there early should get the best seats but thats not happening when people save seats for those that don't plan on getting there early. Now I've seen some workers try to put a stop to it until someone points out that it's going on in other sections so the worker gives in. I love going to state, this will be my 16th straight year going, but this always seems to bring down the experience.
