With the recent passing of Coach Mike Atwood a great coach and man We have set up a scholarship fund in his memory. I wanted to share this with the Indiana wrestling community because I know Coach touched so many lives in this community outside of Delphi community. Please feel free to share as we try to get this fund up and running. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to me and ask. I am attaching the flier on how to give and the criteria that was established by the board.

The student athlete recipient criteria are as follows: - B average student (3.0 GPA) - 4 year athlete, 2 year wrestler - Does not have to be a successful wrestler - Displays leadership and leadership capability. - Hard worker - Puts in the effort - Team player - Displays good character and people would vouch for his character. Delphi Wrestling Yearly Contribution: - We will use the 50% contributed to the Delphi Wrestling Program to create opportunity for the student athletes and bring the program back to championship caliber status. ALL financial decisions and scholarship review will be handled by Tyler Mose , Michael Atwood , Braden Atwood , Brittney Atwood , and Head Coach Luke Schmit. We'll be continuing to add contributions to the account for years to come through various contributions and also the newly formed Coach's Cup golf outing (June 11 @10 a.m. Carroll County Country Club Golf Course).

This is a cluster of all clusters. Whoever put this program together should be fired. Each coach should have gotten 1 code for x tickets and each school should have been assigned a section. Draw team names out of a hat to decide which section. More stress on the coaches and parents that didn't need to be there.

The good thing is it takes less years now, as semi-recently(within the past 5-10 years) they changed it to the 7 year minimum. Before that it would take 10-12 years to get a state tournament. When it was 10-12 years it really hurt a lot of people that wanted to referee, but didn't want to wait out 10 years to maybe get a state finals. That is basically telling a kid while he might be good enough, he can't go to state his freshman and sophomore years.

In all honesty, I want the best refs at semi-state and state and don't care if they have been reffing for two weeks or 50 years. If a guy is good enough to ref at state they shouldn't be handcuffed because they are young.

While there needs to be a "learning" period with the exposure people have to the sport now they can be well prepared to take the mat younger and younger. I would be in favor of having the advancement period allowing a minimum one year needed at each level to advance. Thus the first year a ref can do sectional, second year(pending votes and such) they can do a regional, 3rd year(pending votes and such) a semi-state, and 4th year a state. If the referee is good enough they should be able to advance faster with the coaches votes.

Someone has mentioned to me that it is possible to reach an NCAA tournament, any division, quicker than it is our own State Tournament.  If this is indeed true, then we should seriously look at our system to correct this flaw.

I will reference a very good young Official here by the name of Eric McGill.  He is doing numerous college matches at the Division 1 level.  Surely if he has a weekend open to do any level of our tournament, why in the world would we pass? If there are other high level officials available as well, let’s get them involved too. We know some of our better guys are getting up in age and they are constantly preaching that we are at a shortage. I agree we have to recruit young guys to get more involved, but let’s think outside the box too and recruit some experienced guys at the higher level as well.

    Thoughts?

In my first year as a volunteer assistant coach, I see a lot of things, good and bad, that go on in the wrestling room that I question as an adult, but also think to myself, “Is that how my old teams and I were?” As a former competitor, it’s natural to feel like you could whoop up on the new high school kids of today, but you know as time passes, talent evolves and so does the sport which means that the way things are done have to be adapted to more current styles of coaching and learning. However, I wonder sometimes if things are devolving and actually worse for the athletes. The reason I say that is because I noticed the coaches are a little more cautious in how they approach their athletes these days because parents are more involved (sometimes too involved) on how a coach runs his team. Some kids in our room questioned why they had to go so hard and what the purpose for all of the intense drills was. Our Head Coach, visibly frustrated, explained calmly what the reason was. It caught me by surprise because their HC was my former HC and he was a lot harder and blunt on my teams. It made us better and we appreciated it. We also had lots of competition born inside the room due to our depth, and me and some of my best friends to this day would be cussing at each other and beating the crap out of each other because we cared that much about winning. It’s the nature of the sport. So, I tried to explain to our athletes that real friends push each other and beat up on each other in the room, working for takedowns and drilling hard to reach their goals and they looked kind of confused at that. Maybe my methods are outdated. I’m just wondering is there something I can do that can help push them to break their bad habits such as lazy drilling and a way to be assertive or a way to tell them to be assertive to one another without it becoming an incident. Every time it seems to happen, parents get involved. I don’t wanna call them soft, but at the same time I don’t think I’m telling them anything wrong. I think healthy competition in the room is necessary to be successful, but are their mindsets too weak/too naive to understand this, or is mine broken?

I normally don’t mind bumping in dual meets but when it affects the aspect of a true conference champ in each weight is also when I start to have problem with it. I do like however that kids get 7 matches in.

Russian reacted to Jim calhoun in Special night at Plymouth honoring coach Bob Read
Hall of fame coach Bob Read was honored as he coached his final home dual after 40 plus years at Plymouth high school. It was a special night watching past wrestlers come from literally all over the country to honor him. Coach hates any attention on himself but this was well deserving. I’ve known this man over 40 years and I can honestly say I’ve never met a man with more class, ethics and integrity in my life. The video tribute showed countless former wrestlers share how they have become the husbands, fathers and men they are because of the time and care coach poured into their lives. He’s had numerous state qualifiers, placers and champions but the mentoring he has poured into people is what last. I’ve never met a man who hates to lose and loves to win more but it’s the lessons in life that leaves the greatest marks on his wrestlers. He is a man that is driven by his faith, his family and simply pouring into young men’s lives. I felt like I was peeling an onion all night! Thank you coach Read for all you’ve done in this great sport in Plymouth and in Indiana. Well deserved.

I love that they let teams enter multiple girls in a weight class.  I just wonder why the North and South don't keep teams scores the same way.  The North allows all girls on a team in the same weight class to accumulate team points, where the South made teams designate the scoring wrestler and then the others were blockers.  I believe the South did it correctly which gave more teams a chance to be in the hunt to win the regional.

Let's take some words out of his post and I think there is a legitimate question in there.  Remove "intentional" and "potential broken nose/concusssion".
The valid question is......  Since it was penalized, what would the outcome have been if Donahue could not have continued?  Would it be different if he couldn't continue immediately or if it became a blood issue that couldn't be worked around/stopped?
If we turn this into a rules question using this as a case study, then I believe it is perfectly legit.
Would love to hear from any officials or rules experts on that.

As a coach when doing seeding if you put a legitimate top kid lower you will hurt your kid more than you think will help them. Making them unseeded means they will draw into the top 1 or 2 seed early and thus "capturing" that seed and then knocking a top seed to the consolations earlier than expected.

Just think it's really only been about 10 years since we have been able to see all 32 sectional brackets.
