  1. I know this is a college tournament, but Joe Lee is technically still a HS senior so I posted this hear. Move the thread if need be. Joe went at 165 in the Wilkes Open Dec 22 in Wilkes-Barre, PA. He lost his 1st round match 7-6 to Will Schmidt of Sacred Heart, giving up a reversal with :24 left in the 3rd period. Joe then won 5 in a row to finish 5th, the highest possible after the first round loss . The tournament featured a lot of unattached wrestlers, but also wrestlers from many solid schools from the Northeastern US, such as Lehigh, American, Campbell, etc. I didn't see nationally ranked guys from Lehigh. The results can be found in FloArena. Nice bounce back after losing his first match and going 165 for the first time. He wrestled 157 in the only other Open tournament I'm aware of.

  3. That's funny you say that about the 3 point stance because that's exactly what I thought was his best chance to slow him down. I don't think it's possible to stop him no matter if you are in a 3 point stance or a 300 point stance?. When they are that quick all you can hope to do is slow him down. It reminds me of a funny story of when I wrestled. I wrestled Nick Hull in the Spartan Classic Semis or Finals I believe it was and I remember what i was thinking after the first period was over. I was thinking it was physically not possible that another human could be as quick as he was. After watching the video several times over the years including recently with my dad, we always laugh at me when that third period starts. When it starts we were neutral and as the ref was blowing the whistle to wrestle, Hull just kinda flinched his head the slightest at the same time the ref was blowing the whistle to start and my dad swears till this day that I sprawled before the whistle was blown.??. There is no defense for something that you do not have time to react too. So that is why you have to already be down there as low as possible in the 3 point stance or some guys I've seen do very well slowing quickness down by kinda staying down low on one knee. I was really impressed with Decatur. I don't think we have anyone in Indiana that could beat him untill we get up around 138-145. I only see a few guys IN MY OWN OPINION that could beat him at the 138 pound weight class. I couldn't believe he wasn't on the P4P Rankings. Seems like a nice and humble kid too. The crazy thing is even tho he beat Asa convincingly, I think there was a lot of things that Asa did positive and some things that Asa could learn from this match to make him overall alot better wrestler in the future (ex. Knowing which wrestlers to use a 3 point stance against and which ones to have a squared stance against). Maybe they meet again some day in the NCAA Championships(when it truly matters) and he gets his payback. Good luck the rest of the year and more importantly stay healthy.

  4. Observations/Takeaways from the Al Smith: 106 championship match was awesome. Lots of nice scrambles and back-and-forth through the first two periods. Cruz looked great and imo established himself as a contender. A little biased, but I’d still say the 120 Finals was one of the most exciting matches of the day. Lucas Davison is even better than I thought. Penola looked fantastic in the semis and I expected the match to be moderately close, wouldn’t have ever guessed a 10-0. Columbus East has built a squad the last few years and should have multiple kids competing for Al Smith titles in the coming years. Same for Chesterton and Zionsville. Shout Out to Eli Pokorney. Takes a special talent to win the Afton Quadrangular three times, and with a chance at a fourth.

  5. In order to become a licensed IHSAA wrestling official you can follow this link for details on the process. https://ihsaa.org/Officials/Licensing ******************************************************************************************** Specific points about the On-Line Testing Process that you need to know: Scholarships are now available for first year licensed officials, and most local official's associations will also waive their membership dues for the first year. For information on receiving a free license (you may officiate up to 3 sports at no additional cost, and $5 for each additional sport) please contact Chuck Barnett or Jim Russell, or any senior official in your local association. Another option is the 3 year mentoring program. New recruit gets a mentor (IHSAA official) that helps to get them started the correctly. We can set a new official up with a mentor form there local area (this saves the recruit the $50.00 IHSAA fee + any association (approx $30.00) fees for 1 year) The testing process is an on-line application. No longer do you need to plan to be at a site on a certain day. You do need to have access to a computer to take the test. The testing period is pretty much open all year This is not a timed test. No on-site paper and pencil tests will be provided unless you are taking a class in that sport. The early testing dates for wrestling are April 1-September 8, with regular season testing open from September 9-March 31. In short, you can now test pretty much all year. The test is composed of 100 questions, mostly multiple choice. You must earn 75% or better on the test to become licensed. You should receive your free rules books from IHSAA as soon as they are published and available by the NFHS. If you are testing in more than one sport, the books for the later seasons will be sent when those books arrive in the IHSAA office. Please begin to study for the test upon receipt of the rules books. You may repeat the test at least one time per calendar year if you do not pass it the first time with 75% accuracy. Time your testing wisely, as it does not behoove you to pay for your license once the season is practically over. All IHSAA licenses expire on May 31 of the calendar year and must be renewed between April 1-May 31 of the current calendar year. You should receive timely feedback on your test results but you may not schedule contests until you receive confirmation of such from the IHSAA office, which should come within 7-10 days after your test is submitted (and you have scored 75% or better). **********************************************************************************************Remember, you do not have to be licensed to officiate middle school events or elementary events, and this is a great venue to work and gain experience, especially for those of you who are unsure as to whether or not you actually want to proceed to the high school level. It's a perfect part-time job... especially for a college student. It's a 100 question test that is open book and done online, so you are allowed ample time to complete the examination with little or no stress. Also keep in mind that nearly all officials begin at lower levels and work their way up, so you will not be thrust into the high profile varsity contest with 3000 screaming fans in the stands. If you like the sport and are physically able, becoming an official is a great hobby that pays well, gets you in the door for free, and gives you the best seat in the house! Good Luck! 11. Not sure, he obviously made weight. Asa a big 26, just body types I guess . Decatur a explosive wrestler, quick on his feet. Like for Asa to stay in a 3 point stance in the match to counter act his attacks on his feet but like most matches your involved in he decides to wrestle him squared up. Decatur capitalizes on that that type of defense. They’ll tangle more through out the spring/Summer Grind . Might even train together again at Jordan Camps . Just gotta keep closing the gap.

  12. There were some big kids there. Saw some receding hairlines and some serious ink too! Grown men I’m telling ya. Not that we don’t have that here but more there.

  13. Asa wrestled his butt off and represented Avon/Indiana like a true champion. Very proud of why I saw from him and his team mates. Can't speak for TeamGarcia, but IMO weigh outs on day 1, rather than weigh ins on day 2, gave an advantage to weight cutters. Guys in the semi finals finished up around 7-8pm on day 1, weighed out, then didn't compete again until 1pm on day 2. If I had to guess, I'd say some boys put on 10-15lbs over night!
