Gotta love the "I am a victim mentality".  One reason I don't push youth tournaments that hard because some of the same people blindly attacking people and organizations are in the corner for some kid showing everyone how not to act. I have always found if you have a problem take it directly to them in a professional manner and not in a off handed passive aggressive way.

It's not about rushing his international aspirations, it's about building toward them in the way he thinks is best, step by step.  All the other 17/18-year-olds in the world will be training freestyle-only situations this upcoming calendar year.  By doing some of that AND mixing in folkstyle prep while banging with guys at a much higher level than himself at such a formative age, I'm sure he's hoping he's putting development money in the bank for later.  More and more guys around the country are following the Pico/Snyder path and foregoing some high school when they have international aspirations.  Pico came an eyelash from being our Olympic rep at age 19 and has a giant deal with Bellator to fight eventually and Snyder already had a freestyle world championship to his credit by 19 while also getting an NCAA title--results that I'm sure are hard for the elite few in Nick's shoes to ignore.  Making a senior national team and competing for medals requires every tiny edge a kid can pick up along the way, so his path this year is a very understandable choice.

Let's put it this way Angel is my favorite wrestler in high school and after.  I am putting Nick in that category.  Good luck Nick, looking forward to watching you at the next level.  I am sure there are some wrestlers at 138 that are thankful.

It looked contingent on the lift.  I wonder if a PD will be called if they have the arm trapped but pick the heel to take their opponent to the mat?  The head could still hit the mat from that position as well.

No need to lift them if you have the arm anyways.  A well placed and setup heel spike will do the trick every time.

One cool thing I learned this weekend. Both Geoffrey Davis and Sean Galligar didn't win a single match their freshman year! Davis was 3-22 Anna Galligar was 0-17 on jv!

Piss on em!!!  I did my part back in the day and beat their "small" school State champ at the duels, without hitting a single practice between State and the dual besides the one the day before. Chad Red has proved everything he needs to prove as a High School phenom.

Some people make it seem so easy to build a program, to get numbers, and then ultimately have success.

A youth program is a great start, but you MUST retain those kids or else the youth program is worthless. The biggest thing that will scare off kids is pushing them to go to events too early. I would only push beginner tournaments, friendship meets, etc if anything early on. Tournaments are scary and not fun if you aren't ready for them.

Here are some suggestions for the high school level.
If you aren't in the building one good way is to go to lunch and sit down with the kids and recruit them that way. Have your wrestlers point you towards kids that they think would help the team.

Talk to the football/cross county/soccer teams, especially the middle school and freshman teams near the end of their seasons. Hopefully you can get a respected coach to say wrestling is good also, that NEVER hurts.

Good old fashioned bribery never hurts. Tell the current wrestlers that if they get one new kid to come out next year and he stays out you'll do X for the kid that go the new guy out. X could be some cool gear, pizza party, or anything else that the kids would eat up.

Promote the sport by doing things like a float in a holiday parade or setting up a booth at a festival.

Another great way to promote the sport at the school is give the kids lots of different wrestling shirts. Things for perfect attendance, being on the honor roll, 20 wins, wrestler of the week, etc. That way the kids are wearing them and others are constantly seeing it.

After 12 years of being involved in wrestling in the state of Indiana, the Franklin family is saying thanks for the memories.  Two boys and over 215 career IHSAA (between them) victories later we are bowing out and thanking the sport for all it has taught us.  Jack made it to Banker's this year which was a special moment for all of us.  For those of you that remember Jack's older brother, Andy (3x NHC Champ - 2008, 2009 & 2010), he is in his second year of law school at IU (Bloomington) and in the top 20% of his class.  Jack is headed to Ball State this Fall.  As for me, I hope the aging process slows to a normal pace as it feels I've aged 25 years during the times I lived and died with my sons these past 12 years.  Homestead HS, where Jack and Andy attended, is in great hands with Coaches Devaux, Stockman and Oberlin.  Viva Indiana wrestling!

Nothing drives me more mad than calls after the match is over. It happened to us 2 years ago in the 3rd place match. When we questioned we were told that the scoring was "obvious", well call it on the mat and give my guy a chance to respond on the mat. Don't wait and lead my wrestler to believe that the score is different.

Also side ref's rarely overturn main officials, not sure if that's in the ref's Brotherhood of Conduct book or what. There's a reason that there's two refs out there, not to give high fives and back each other up, but to have legit have discussions and make calls w/ 4 eyes.

This is the one I am interested in.  I don't know anyone that has tried it.  I know a person that sells these and I can get you the pricing for it if you need.  You can teach your team how to throw with them so the next time you wrestle Prairie Heights you guys can have a launch fest.

    Coach,

I really am not trying to upset you, and I will agree that most if not all unbiased wrestling fans would say that the call was not a good one. And it is very unfortunate when it happens at a level of this magnitude.

But the point that I was trying to make earlier is that I just don't think there is anything anyone can tell you that will result in you &/or anyone else now having a clear cut understanding (with absolutely no gray area) on what the ruling is &/or should be. No matter what changes are made &/or wording and pictures that are used, there is always going to be different interpretations between different people. That does not mean that changes &/or clarifications are not justified, just that the expectation to clear this up beyond all doubt is not achievable.

What I will suggest, that may not be real popular in certain circles, is that what is truly needed here is not rule changes but more/better training of the officials. But realize that this is much easier said than done, and it would not completely resolve the issue of "gray area" either.

We know that, we have been wrestling and coaching long enough to know when the hand is raised it is over. We are honestly looking for a true ruling. If it is a escape we will argue this for my wrestlers in the future. If it is not then we want to correctly argue this ruling in the future if it happens again. Maybe it will help someone else also.
