With the allocations,   what are Purdue's wrestlers chances of making the NCAA.   Possibly 7 or even 8 on a good day wrestling.

Lydy, Bruner, Schroder, Coleman would get wild cards and are locks.
Penola probably would get wildcard too.

Fillius, Parriott and Lyon all are going to have to wrestle to get in and cant afford an upset.

    Should be a fun day.

Honestly I was a bit surprised that Parris got the #1 seed over Steveson, however I am happy that he did as I feel Iike he earned it with the pin over Cassiopi and the fact that Steveson sat during the Michigan-Minnesota dual.

They are separated, however Cassiopi is a dangerous opponent and I’m happy that Parris will not have to go through him again prior to facing Steveson (assuming the seeds hold)

133 should be a fun weight there are some hammers there.

Also, is Christian Brunner going to be able to go for the Boilers?  I thought he was out for the year but I saw he was seeded

backtothemat reacted to doctorWrestling in Tough Coaching Scenarios
Some of you may have seen the video of "The Slam" from the DCC vs Davison team state championships in MI from Saturday.  It was the one where Davison's #1 nationally ranked Alex Facundo lost on a slam call that looked like a normal hard double leg.  The DCC kid ( who is a really tough kid and Fargo AA ) looked fine, got up and went to the line to start wrestling before his coach called him over to be looked at by his trainer.  DCC's version of the story is that their trainer was in the bathroom so the MHSAA sent a doctor out to evaluate the kid and the doctor said he was not fit to finish and DCC picks up 6 points in a match they would almost surely lost by bonus points.  It looked like a terrible decision to have the kid take a dive but according to DCC, the coach didn't intend it that way and it got taken out of his hands.

I also saw a clip on Twitter where Mocco talks about a time he hurt a guy from Iowa State and Bobby Douglas jumped out of the stands to make his guy wrestle 1 second so he could then forfeit to Mocco because he didn't want to take a win like that.

I thought it might help to share some stories of coaching decisions and scenarios that went well or went terribly wrong.  I am not sure I would know the rules for stopping injury time before it ran out or the concussion rules in the heat of the moment of a match.  I could see where things happen quickly and decisions are made or not made so a bad result happens unintentionally.  I don't like DCC but have made enough mistakes to see how it could happen.

    Anyone care to share?

This whole thread and group of replies has became ridiculous.  I feel that there's a lot of common sense left out of many statements made in this thread.

We just had a kid become a two time finalist from Garrett.  Our athlete was naturally gifted, but also worked his tail off.  Our kid went to RTC's, Fargo, Camps, Private sessions with coaches, and spent extra time in the weight room.  He did phenomenal and had a phenomenal career.  He did amazing and will have a phenomenal college career and life!

All that being said...we are not a big school...he was the exception to the rule...he went above and beyond the requirements to be elite.  I'm sure other small school kids that were elite did the same.  If we compare the "average athlete at a "Big School" compared to the "average athlete at a small school," we're going to find at the root they're very much the same.  But, when we dig deeper, we're going to find that the athlete at the larger school has more training partners, more opportunities, and generally speaking, pretty good coaching.  There's good coaching at smaller schools for sure, and I won't contest that.  However, if I were able to get every athlete at Garrett to wrestle, I'm pretty sure I still couldn't produce as many state champs as the "elite, bigger, better schools."  Regardless, none of that bothers me.  I love my community and I relish the underdog role and I feel that we can make some great things happen.

With all that being said, I prefer the team state series to be classed, but that's a no brainer.  If our state was to ever go to an individual class system, I'd prefer we went to a maximum of a 2 class system.

So I have coached at Southern Wells for 16 years. We have an enrollment of around 250 students. Obviously I am for classing the team side of the tournament because I feel like that is a no brainer. However when it comes to the Individual tournament I love the one class. We have had success sending multiple guys down to the State Tournament but Semi-State Qualifiers are a big deal for our school and our wrestling team as well. We have had a wrestler at the Semi-State tournament for each of the past 16 years and that is a streak we are extremely proud of. Are the expectations different being a wrestler from Southern Wells or a wrestler from Indianapolis Cathedral, well yeah I guess. But when you have a special group like we did at Southern Wells this year and take 3 guys down to the State Finals and wrestle against Crown Point, Penn, and Cathedral on Friday night, what else is better than that! These 3 guys deserved to wrestle on the biggest stage against the biggest schools and best wrestlers in the State.

This was my first year in attendance I personally thought that the tournament was ran fairly well both days. I have been to many tournaments in my day and I know that this could've been 100x worse. Thought Southport were awesome hosts had no issues with table workers and had some good options at the concession stand. Would like to thank all who put together this tournament and created an opportunity for these underclassman to see what they have against each other, I wish this was a thing back when I was in HS guess I should've been born a few years later. All in all a fun competitive weekend of GREAT wrestling time to get ready for next season!

The IN vs IL All Star Classic Duals has been postponed.  Both Indiana and Illinois committee members have concerns regarding the coronavirus.  We have determined it be best to cancel the duals this weekend to help prevent the possible continued spread of the virus throughout Indiana and Illinois.  We are committed to running the prestigious duals at a later date.  We are not able to determine the new date at this time due to the uncertainty of the situation surrounding the coronavirus.  Both Indiana and Illinois representatives will be monitoring the situation closely as we prepare to set the next date for the duals.

It is that time of year again!  The prestigious IN vs IL All Star Classic Duals will be on March 14th, 15th at Notre Dame College Prep High School in Illinois this year.  Indiana has had the best of the best Senior’s on this team over the past decades.  It is an honor to be on this team.  These young man have earned it.  Indiana bases selections on highest placing seniors in the IHSAA state tournament.  We take the top two seniors.  There are times when Illinois has three senior state champs based on their class system.  In that case we would take the next highest senior placer.  If you are on this list please text or email Coach Matt Behling asap to confirm your spot.  I will provide a list of the details to any qualifying candidates.  Please note that all high school coaches of these fine athletes are invited to attend as well and coach their senior!

Last year we held the duals at Culver Academies High School to a sellout crowd.    The event is also live streamed to thousands of viewers.  Let’s make our best effort to get Indiana’s top seniors at the event.

backtothemat reacted to hook and half in Evansville Mater Dei 2003
The Wildcats traveled to Columbus, Ohio on January 18 to compete in the National College Duals.  Mater Dei rolled over, Lisbon, 56-12 in the first round, and Cincinnati Lakota East, 58-13, in the second round.  Their last opponent, St. Paris Graham, was much more formidable.  The national polls had Mater Dei at 11th, while St. Paris Graham was ranked second.  St. Paris Graham was a buzz saw and defeated the ‘Cats, 39-15.  The loss broke Mater Dei’s 116-match winning streak and handed Mater Dei its second dual loss in 253 matches.

"If our streak mattered, we wouldn't have accepted this challenge,” said Mike Goebel.  “We never talk about that. We just saw this as a chance to wrestle a quality opponent, somebody who will make us better in the long run.”

St. Paris Graham was the real deal.  Standard-bearer Blake Maurer lost only the second match of his career, a 3-1 decision to Joe Dennis.

"It was a great match," said Goebel. “He (Dennis) got a takedown with two seconds left. We didn't question it when we were there, but when we watched the tape, Blake was clearly out of bounds and Dennis' foot was on the line. The match should've gone overtime, I guess. But that doesn't necessarily change the outcome. The guy was a bear. Blake will learn from it, go on and get better."

"The guys came back to the room and decided they needed to work harder, and that's what they've done," said Goebel. "We didn't lose anything that really mattered, we just lost a match.  But even at that, if we win all four of our close matches, it's a tie. And if we get those and Craig Weinzapfel gets the pin at 145, which we thought he had, well, we could conceivably win."

Maurer faced an unfamiliar foe in his match with Dennis:  Nerves.

“To be totally honest, I was very nervous,” said Maurer.  “The match was at Ohio State.  I really wanted to go to Ohio State.  After my warm-up, I look in the stands and there is Russ Hellickson (Ohio State’s wrestling coach) setting next to my dad.  I’m like, ‘Holy crap, I need to get it done out here.’”

Mater Dei tallied wins from Matt Coughlin, Craig Weinzapfel, Sam Wildeman and Chaz Schwartz.  Schwartz won with an eight-second pin at heavyweight. The Wildcats were disappointed with their performance.

“The whole dual was about ‘What ifs?’” said Craig Weinzapfel.  “We had a bunch of one-point matches that went the wrong way.  To not do our best was a real let-down.”

In Paris St. Graham, Mater Dei found themselves sampling their own medicine.

“Everywhere we wrestled, people always talked about what good shape we were in,” said Craig Weinzapfel.  “That team (St. Paris Graham) was in incredible shape; incredibly strong.  It seemed like they had the mentality that they were going to go as hard as they could no matter what.”

“We were at the weigh-in,” said Wildeman.  “I’m looking at this guy, and he is around my size (160 pounds).  One of the guys on the team, said ‘No, that’s who Macke (125 pounds) has.  The guy was huge.  He was a man.”

“Graham won all of the close matches,” said Maurer.  “Their conditioning was better than ours.  We had our opportunities; we just didn’t get it done.”
