    Lee & Retherford

Both Spencer Lee & Zane Retherford qualified for the 2024 Olympics to give the US men's freestyle team a full lineup in Paris. Lee went undefeated in impressive fashion to qualify. Retherford lost in the round of 16 to the Mongolian Ochir who then pulled him into repechage where Zane went 4-0 to qualify. Let's go USA!

  6. I feel for Coleman Scott, but you have to get yourself out of your own rut when you have an opportunity like like this. Another 15 years of classic Cowboy wrestling isn't winning any national titles. Taylor may flame out and suck as a head coach, (I don't think he will) but you have to take a big swing. For coaches, I heard it's Gillman and Jimmy Kennedy coming with him. Didn't know this, but Kennedy is his brother-in-law. He's looking for a heavyweight coach as well, and it'll probably be a big name. Recruiting could be nuts for Taylor. He obviously can't run M2 anymore, but the club will continue to run under someone he hires and he'll instantly have a pipeline to Pennsylvania talent. It'll be interesting if any Penn State guys follow him to OK State. Haines and Kasak were M2 guys. Now they can't just hop in the portal now and be eligible, but they both were looking at redshirt years so it's in the realm of possibility. And OK State can do some major damage this year yet on the national scene. Penn State still looms large as the heavy favorite, but OK State has a very good team put together for next year, and they seem to be the favorites to land Andrew Alirez and Wyatt Hendrickson from the portal. Their lineup could look like this going into the season. 125 - Troy Spratley, blood round finisher now getting Gillman to work with 133 - Cael Hughes, blue chip recruit coming off redshirt wrestling behind Fix 141 - Tagen Jamison/Jordan Williams, not sure if Williams can go down, but if Alirez does transfer in he's going 149. Both Jamison and Williams were national qualifiers 149 - Andrew Alirez, national champ as a possible transfer 157 - Teague Travis, round of 16 165 - Caleb Fish, transfer in round of 16 174 - Dean Hamiti, transfer in multiple time AA and national champion contender 184 - Dustin Plott, national runner-up now getting coached by DT 197 - Christian Carroll, no intro needed on this website 285 - Wyatt Hendrickson, two time third placer as a possible transfer Now two of those transfers have to happen, but if they do that lineup has potential to be awesome.

    Iran wrestling news

@Thor and @The Genius, I'm actually seeing a lot of people on other boards insisting DT would wrestle the Olympics as his last tournament if Brooks can't go. It seems insane to think of in the middle of the transfer portal, needing to move across the country and probably selling a couple of local businesses. ...and probably leaving his training camp. But people insist it would do so much for the notoriety of the Oklahoma State program that he'd do it. They say, "John Smith wrestled in the Olympics while coaching. Cael Sanderson made a freestyle comeback while coaching. Why can't DT?" I hear them, but in this day and age of 24/7/365 recruiting and training demands for D1 coaches--seems crazy. To be his best, he needs 6+ hours per day for training, eating, and recovery activities and 8-9 hours of sleep. He then uses 9-10 hours per day for a big-time D1 coaching job, plus family, business, moving, travel, media appearances, etc, with none of the downtime that a high-level athlete's mind needs in preparing for an elite event? Let me be the first to predict DT doesn't get gold if he is our rep.

    PURDUE HEAD ASST.

Yeah, whether it's Green or another "name" that has proven recruiting acumen, it could make more sense than ever in this environment. I would have been the one in the past to be slow to think a "name" hire is the right move for building good programs. But you're basically "rebuilding" every year now in college sports with all the movement. You need recruiting power above almost anything else, it's sad to say. A guy like Green's been in the game a long time already and the Nebraska tree has plenty of Indiana ties to get the local top talent alongside the national guys he might be able to get. Very interesting name.

Purdue's best shot to not be a mid to bottom tier Big Ten team is to make a hire like Oklahoma State did with David Taylor. Now Purdue isn't OK State, and has nowhere near the resources for wrestling, but they can still go hire an unproven young guy that has had collegiate and international success. I wish Purdue would go after someone like James Green and give him the keys and let him bring in his proven guys.

    Lee & Retherford

The world rankings are based on a mechanical scoring system for earning points at certain events. You could pin everyone at the Worlds, not wrestle any other tournaments, and be far down the rankings. It's not intuitive at all. It's a "pretty good at the tournaments you wrestled" award for those who wrestle a lot of the correct events. Look at Flo's international rankings they just released. They're a lot more accurate. Brooks #1, Dake #2, Snyder and Parris #4, Retherford #6, Lee #9 (this is the one that seems a little off, but justifiable based on lack of top wins). Your discussion points from above: 1) I think Lee can win gold. He has the talent, for sure. He's shown, though, that athletic, explosive scorers like Ramos at the NCAA level and Zou that he faced at this tournament will give him problems. And he'll need to beat about 3 of those to get the gold. Micic has developed funky scrambling and counter defense that keeps up with that type and Gilman has insane head and hands defense. Lee hasn't shown either of those, so it's worrisome when he'll have to face a few guys with Zou-level athleticism. 2) A little bit related here with Brooks: he's shown he can be scored on more easily than a Taylor or Yazdani. I'd probably give Brooks our best shot at gold--but he absolutely could take a silly loss (like J'Den Cox did his first couple international tournaments) before he even meets a Yazdani. That's simply because of inexperience with the sorts of attacks and savvy he'll see that work differently from U.S. folk/free hybrid wrestlers. And then there's Yazdani. Other than Taylor, Yazdani hasn't even had a close call, domestically or internationally, in any match since he moved up to 86kg in 2017. He's 85-0 against super tough Iranians, Russians and all the Russian exports to other countries, and everything else internationally since February 2016--other than Taylor. Brooks on the other hand looked vulnerable in all of his Olympic Trials matches. All this to say...he's an otherworldly talent that absolutely can beat Yazdani and everyone else, but we need to see what he looks like internationally. 3) For sure there's a puncher's chance with Snyder and Parris--but it's not likely. In Parris' case, Zare of Iran is a serious, serious roadblock. He was very young at the last Olympics. A few months after the Olympics, he destroyed the long-standing "Big 2" (Geno of Georgia and Akgul of Turkey) that gave Steveson good matches at the Olympics--and he hasn't had a close match since and has won 3 straight world titles. He's a beast that would be favored for gold even with Steveson in the mix. Plus, Parris has shown he's close with Geno and Akgul--but not that he can beat them. In Snyder's case, he pulled out a super-exciting, super-tight win over Sadulaev the first time they met a few weeks of bad training into Sad's first time up at 97. After that, it was total domination by Sad. Now add in the ultra-talented Tazhudinov that beat Sad, teched Kyle, and smashed everyone else at last worlds and every other tournament. Plus there's the young, talented Azarpira from Iran that just took out Kyle in their first encounter a couple months ago too. It's really, really hard to see where Kyle beats two of those guys to win gold. He's on his downswing athletically while Sad's still mid-prime and the other two are on sharp upward trajectories that will only look more impressive at the Olympics. 4) In short, it would be arguably a bigger shock than Parris or Snyder if Retherford took gold. He won a non-Olympic weight in an Olympic-qualifying World Championships last year. That means anybody and everybody that can get to 65kg did it and left 70kg much weaker than it normally already is as a non-Olympic weight. His biggest weakness is athleticism against elite guys like Ochir that just beat him. He faced none of that type last year. He'll have 10 with that explosiveness in his 16-man bracket at the Olympics. He'll be a clear underdog against 5 guys, and there will only be 2 or 3 very clear wins from among the 16. With that said, he's a warrior. Ultra-strong, well-conditioned, smart, experienced. He's capable of making a run and getting a medal. Gold is hard for me to imagine, though.

  12. Anyone else mind boggled over this one occurring. There were rumors the last few days, but it still unexpected considering a prestigious alumni like Colman Scott with a solid coaching record quite a decent head coaching job to take the heir apparent role under Smith all this season. And now he’s passed by even if it was for Taylor. I feel bad for Scott if he didn’t do anything that blatantly made the school consider rejecting him prior to Taylor’s interest. Someone in the search process at OK St. clearly was looking for the magic (pun intended) beans that may knock Penn State down a peg. It would be safe to say this pretty much signals an end to Taylor’s international career. Who does Taylor bring in as assistance that can start chipping away at Penn State’s recruiting and training dominance. Does Taylor retain at least one OK St. legacy coach to help retain current top commits? Who may he grab from the recruiting or transfer pool over Penn State? Where do the rest of OK St. staff likely end up? So many questions and answers are not coming quick enough.

  14. Feels weird not seeing a Rooks in the IU lineup. They both had nice careers and were generally very reliable. Graham really turned it on later in his IU career. It's improbable for either state school to ever get a topnotch recruiting class. Money, the high talent level in topnotch programs' 'rooms', exposure...there isn't a lot of incentive to snub the big boys in favor of IU or Purdue, even if you're an Indiana native. IU and Purdue aren't getting our state's elite level recruits, which I realize isn't a new thing, but imagine if Angel Escobedo was a senior in HS right now. I highly doubt he hitches his wagon to IU in that scenario. I know I'm preaching to the choir--all of us Indiana/PU wrestling fans would love to field stronger teams, ideally with a majority of the very best high school guys from Indiana. Interesting to see if Taylor's hire impacts Carroll's performance next season. I could see the room at OSU overflowing with topnotch senior level talent in the next few years and steel sharpens steel.

  15. The kids that go to these schools are wrestling national level events during the season through their school. These are the same kids that are wrestling off season national events. A family should not have to forgo great national events and exposure for their child simply because of the wrestling program they are in. Kids see Brownsburg, Crown Point, and Center Grove being nationally ranked and, therefore, getting bigger events on their schedule. It is hard to argue for them to stay put in a program that is not nationally recognized with teammates that may not be year round wrestlers. Families and athletes want to be a part of something special. Being able to compete as a team for titles has a certain allure. Is this any different than other sports programs? Families will go where their child can get the best looks and have a high chance of success. If more programs had national level events for their athletes to compete in, would we see the amount of transfers happening?
