  1. I pay the annual fee for FloWrestling - and I think it's worth it.  In addition to being able to have these State matches (and all 4 semistates) available in a nice 4-screen setup, it also gets you more features on Trackwrestling, like being able to get all brackets from any tournament in one single printout/view.

Also, if you are a wrestling fan besides just IHSAA, Flo has some good documentaries they have done in the past that are enjoyable to watch - and also there is a Flo app on my Roku stick that lets me get to their content that way (although the 4-screen split doesn't seem to be an option)

Never thought about the FloMarching option mentioned - may be a way to save some $ and get the content you want

  2. For the Hamilton fans in the cheap seats:

    Here comes the general!
    Ladies and gentlemen!
    Here comes the general!
The moment you've been waiting for!
    Here comes the general!
The Pride of Mount Vernon! Fort Wayne!
    Here comes the general!
    George Washington! General HeavyHandz!

    We are out-gunned
    (What!)
    Out-manned
    (What!)
    Out-numbered, out-planned
    (Boom, boom, boom; boom, boom!)
We gotta make an all-out stand
Hey yo, I'm gonna need a right-hand man
    (Boom, boom, boom; boom, boom!)

    Check it —
Can I be real a second?
    For just a millisecond?
Let down my guard and tell the people how I feel a second?
Now I'm the model of a modern major general
The venerated Virginian Wrestling veteran whose men are all
Lining up to put me up on a pedestal, writing letters to relatives
    Embellishing my elegance and eloquence
But the elephant is in the room
The truth is in your face
These Fort Wayne studs... they gonna place!

  3. Carroll just seems to have superb raw strength. Although I think he us probably a technical wrestler, yesterday was mostly hyper aggression paired with brute strength.

I think Grange did a good job slowing him down, fending off a few attacks and then starting to look for scoring opportunities. He did get to the legs for a 2nd potential takedown, but Carroll chest-wrapped him and flipped him over with raw strength. I'd love to see Grange vs Critchfield with the winner facing Carroll. Kudos to Juan Grange - he didn't back down a bit in an imposing situation

I keep scratching my head as to why people assume he was a state champ .

Yes, got confused on that.  I know Penn had 2 or 3 wrestlers transfer in last year from other states.  I thought one of them was a state champion, and my failed memory was sure it was Grange

  5. Interesting storyline this weekend - State #1 Christian Carroll could see State #3 Juan Grange from Penn in the semistate finals

Carroll leaves Penn, transfers to New Prairie and is blocked from competing for 1 year

Grange is a state champ who moves into Penn district and fills the spot vacated by Carroll

Carroll is undefeated on the season

Grange's only loss is to Brownsburg Hwt Leighton Jones at team state

I'm looking forward to the matchup and see whether or not Grange can slow down the Carroll train a bit. I'm guessing that this will be an emotionally charged match that Carroll has been looking forward to for a while. In the end, with two talented young men, I hope it's a great match and some of the drama can be put to rest

  6. I think each school that has a wrestler represented should get X amount of tickets together per wrestler (maybe 8 or 10).  These could be allotted to family of the wrestlers first, then whoever is decided after that.

Put all these seats in prime locations - this would guarantee that family and close friends get a great view.  After that, tickets are up for grabs - people can use the buying together strategies to do the best they can to get close seating

It's very frustrating and the reason I quit going to the majority of Penn's matches . I got tired of only seeing the true varsity a couple times per year . At the Henry Wilk classic , Penn lost to Springboro , OH and a very close one to Westfield . They did not wrestle Steenbeke or Grange in either of these matches . They certainly would of beat Westfield and possibly Springboro as well  had 2 of their best wrestlers wrestled . When fans travel and pay money to support their team , they want to see the entire Varsity . Seems like every year the only time that happens is the Mishawaka dual , The Al Smith or Tournament time .

Is the strategy to keep their record unblemished, to prevent injury or ??

Not happening. Brackets are out and penn ducked him. How strategic...

I'm sure Grange is probably injured - why would a team hold a senior out of their final conference tournament?  However, he didn't wrestle against Critchfield from Mater Dei either last weekend - although he did bump up to 285 and wrestle Leighton Jones in a 3-2 loss vs Brownsburg earlier in the day

  9. Agreed on your rankings Garcia - made me stop and think about what factors go into their success.  I have a few areas that came to mind:

    1. Recruiting locale - do they recruit nationwide or mostly local (which isn't bad if your "local" is full of studs

    2. Recruiting talent - are you bringing in national-level wrestlers or state-caliber guys

    3. Development - once wrestlers come to the program, do they show further progression

Thinking of a few of these teams, here's how I see a few of them (mostly, although there are exceptions).  Would like to know how you see these as you are more familiar with the college scene, or anyone else's thoughts (Disco, Thor)...

    1. Penn State - National recruiting, High Level, High Progression
    2. Iowa - Mixed recruiting, Mixed level of guys, Mixed progression - to me they develop to "Iowa-style" wrestling
    3. Ohio State - National recruiting, High Level, not sure what I think on progression here - mixed I guess?
    4. Minnesota - Local recruiting, Mixed level, Med/High progression
    5. Michigan - National recruiting, High level wrestlers, Med/High progression
    6. Wisconsin - Local recruiting, Medium level talent, Medium progression

    .....

Purdue - Mixed recruiting, Medium talent, Med/High progression

Indiana - Local recruiting, Medium talent, Low progression

Stacked up against other teams in Big 10 - I like where Purdue has gone with progression of their wrestlers - I think they get the most out of the talent they have.  They have gone more national with their recruiting, but not necessarily bringing in super high level guys.  I do think that Neinhaus may be an exception here - he's got a high ceiling I think.  Kendall Coleman has looked great too but seems to have plateaued this season (just realized while typing that "plateaued" has 4 vowels in a row! 🤯).  I thought Streck or

Indiana is getting a lot of local guys, but like Purdue hasn't landed the highest level in-state wrestlers.  The progression of their wrestlers doesn't seem to be great to me at this point, but I am hoping that Escobedo can turn that around.  Washington has adapted very well to the college wrestling scene and he is the primary bright point on the squad.

For our state colleges, the tipping point will be getting maybe two of the highest in-state guys to go there, and to have success.  I had hopes that Allred, Seltzer, Parris or Carroll would choose one of them.  Mendez and Lee seemed to be a foregone conclusion to go out of state

Is this online anywhere? I’d love to see it.

It's on FloWrestling if you have an account.  Mat #17 @ 2:27

Great match with a lot of action and attempted takedowns.  Pretty much zero riding time, all on the feet.  Kudos to Seltzer for bumping up to give Mendez a challenge - and he certainly did challenge him.  Mendez was just a little quicker and more technical I think which gave him a few angles for his takedowns.  But Seltzer did get one takedown on a throwby, and attempted several others including a flying squirrel-type front headlock right at the end.  I was impressed with Seltzer's strength in the match versus such a high level opponent one weight up
