  1. Usually in any controversial decision, wrestling or otherwise, you can see the rationale even if it is outweighed by your contrary belief.

But I can’t make heads or tails of this one.

Anybody know the argument on why it is being done this way?

You're stating the obvious and I 100% agree,  But the original post asked who is undefeated, not who was the best.  The rankings take care of factoring in the level of competition.   Who is the best wrestler and who has wrestled who is a different discussion (and a fun one), IMO

Ok. My apologies. So this is like an official thing through IHSAA or something?

And (In-State) doesn't count.  You're undefeated or not undefeated

Well if that’s the case than whether you’re undefeated or not doesn’t really mean anything considering the variance in competition.

You can’t compare a wrestler who seeks out top level national competition with one who has only wrestled in their back yard.

  4. Even if that mentality is outdated in the mainstream, I don’t think it is ineffective. Quite the contrary. It definitely leads to success.  I am not speaking in terms of wrestling, as I am no expert in wrestling.  I am speaking in terms of life.  And this mentality is the reason I have my kids wrestle. Of all the sports I participated in as a kid, wrestling taught me the most. And it taught me the “mentality” that you’re referring to—that pushing yourself to the extreme gave you an edge over the competition and made you realize that your limits are far beyond what you think.  That is invaluable in all aspects of life.

With that said, I would struggle being a coach because I would be hesitant to push other people’s kids the way I push my own. And that is because of the change in society as a whole doesn’t fit with my mentality.

My favorite coaches of my sons’ are the ones that don’t give a hoot about the changes in society and say and do things I would not if I were in their place. 😆

As a Perry Meridian supporter, I knew that Perry was going to lose to Cathedral. So, I was really just hoping for some great matches. Deep down, I really wanted to see Perry bump Alex Cottey up to wrestle Zeke Seltzer and Mathew Koontz bump up to wrestle Logan Bailey. Even though both Alex and Mathew won, I was bummed out because we did not get to see those matches. In wake of my disappointment, I am wondering how many times two number one ranked wrestlers in two different weight classes got a chance to wrestle each other. The only one I can remember is Noah Warren vs Nathan Walton at Team States in 2018 with Nathan Walton unfortunately coming out on top. So if anybody knows of any times this has occurred, please feel free to share.

I was hoping to see Cottey bump up as well.

I just don't buy this anymore.  If you want to wrestle D3 in college, I don't think they care that much if you are a state champ.  Even if you are, there isn't money for it.  If you want a scholarship, I don't think you are getting one without doing well at tournaments like at least a Central Regional or one of the many national level tournaments that now exist.  You should teach them to shoot higher than a single class state tournament also in that case.

My son wrestles in more national level events than he does local, but thank you for the advice.

Do Indiana state champs not typically receive scholarships of some kind?

  7. Here is an argument on why one class is better for the kids:

A state championship in a state with one class will carry more weight with college coaches.

Also, I am raising my kids to think big.  Not just in terms of wrestling, but in life. But in that theme, as far as wrestling goes, competing in a single class state tournament is a much bigger stage, and encourages them to shoot higher than a multi-class tourney.

After watching him at Al Smith Evan Dickey is really good I wouldn’t be surprised to see him be a major part of cathedral success.

Yep. One of a few suggested outcomes above that I believe either would go the other way, or should be considered a tossup for sure.

But hey, you know what they say about opinions. 😁

This is Evans dad and not sure of your intentions but since you joined 30 minutes one can assume. The Rankings are fun to look at but don’t mean anything once you step on the mat. I’m aware Evan went 10-0 and his team was 9-1 while his team took 1st in Silver Bracket. Indiana Wrestling is on the  rise and lots of kids doing well across the country. If you need to contact me I’m always available.

Hey I always thought you were champ725.  Lol

I was actually at the meet.....I live about 20 from the school

Oh, ok. Sounds great. Thanks for being a fan of middle school wrestling.  Would love to meet you if you’re ever at another tournament.  Please introduce yourself next time.  God bless.

Hi Dillon's dad... yes I registered on here to ask about that match,  my kids are way older now, but I still follow... and I am aware of your son, like I said I never heard of the other kid so I was curious... good luck to your son

Where did you see the results of matches at Huntington Duals?

Thanks 4 verifying it,  I was just shocked I've never heard of Denton or seen him in any list,  but he dominated Graham!

Hi there. I am Dillon’s dad. Bryce is a tough kid. He actually injury defaulted Dillon out of ISWA state when they were 2nd yr novices. Dillon ended up placing 8th, And Bryce placed 5th, I think.  That was the first time Dillon placed there.

You registered on this website 6 hrs ago and immediately posted in this thread about this match.   That is interesting to me.

But yes, the score was 5-1 at Huntington.  Like I said, Bryce is a tough kid.

    Best of luck.
