I say just Lake County, some try to claim it but I do not think that is right. Had a kid in college one time say he was from da region, I asked where, and he said Rensselaer, I just said you are not from da region and never spoke to him again.

It's a struggle to find that balance. When I coached HS I was blown away by the Kiddie Circuit, now here I am completely wrapped up in it.
It's keeping up w/ the Jones's, you don't want to burn kids out, but you also don't want to take kids to tournaments and get blown away by 8 year olds that train wrestling 14 months a year.
My 8 year old currently does Football (Aug-Oct), Travel Baseball (all year), Wrestling (Nov - whenever) and b/c he had one night open a week now we've added gymnastics. My head spins. I've laid off on wrestling this year compared to prior years out of fear of burnout.
I stress to my parents that I'm not here to develop Bantam state champs, but I'm here to help get your kid to Bankers Life when they are in high school. I constantly preach that it's a marathon not a race and to trust the process. I take kids to national level tournaments w/ The Outlaws and they get smoked but they have a great time traveling, hanging out w/ each other, and seeing new places. But I still see frustration in faces of parents. I know the answer but the answer leads to burn out in most kids.

I agree, @JMILL has volunteered to pay for all the USA guys' flights out of his own pocket so that we don't lose money. For all the bad things I have said about him, he really stepped it up for this event.

The RCA Dome would be way too cold in February (since it is a parking lot now)
Lucas Oil Stadium would have to give the IHSAA a great deal/discount to use it affordably.

This year's state meet was great, as always - but, what is your favorite state finals and why?
For me, it was probably Chad Red's senior season. The electricity in the air for that Lee/Red match was one of the coolest things I've experienced in the sport.
Last year the most fun was the third-place heavyweight match.

I just wanted to say thank you to the IHSAA, IHSWCA, all the workers and people who have ever had a hand in developing the state finals, and of course, the wrestlers who make the finals so entertaining.  I have always loved the wrestling state finals, however, this year had a bigger impact on me.  My son is now a 7th grader and wrestling for Greenfield Junior High School.  As his father and Coach, I preach doing everything the right way.  From his grades, to his character, to his wrestling...I constantly harp on doing them the right way.  Watching my son listen to the introductions of so many incredible young men who not only excel on the mat, but in the classroom and as men of character, was priceless for me.  I love that we celebrate these athletes the way we do for all to see.  I know at least my son is watching!

Concur. Along those lines, and this only works if there's just a couple of you..
    1. wear a neutral color shirt..gray/white/black..most teams have a variation of those colors somehow.
    2. Know at least one name from about 6 of the larger teams that are the ones usually hoarding the seats..you know who they are!
    3. Just tell the nice lady/man with bed sheets/coats/tape that you are Jason Tsirtsis (random name to protect the innocent but use the name from #2 above of whichever team section your in) aunt/uncle and drove to watch him and just need a couple seats.
    4. The mean seat lady/man will then become super nice, welcome you with open arms, ask about insert name from team section here and you plant your arse in their section.
    5. Upon wrestling commencement, shed your neutral color shirt..throw on your loud and proud #PainTrain, Jimtown new State 2018 shirt.
    6. Stand up and start the #PainTrain, Jimtown chant or my fave..Unleash the Giant saying!!

It’s been an honor to coach him, along with his fellow senior teammates in Mills, Mulkey, and Walton. I’ve learned tons from the fab 4 and can’t wait to see what they accomplish in college! They changed the atmosphere at Brownsburg for the sport of wrestling and while it will be sad to walk into the wrestling room without them the mark they made will last for years to come.

New Castle's Dalton Clouse might possibly be the only person to have a lead on Mason Parris this season.
Clouse stepped to the mat, and strategically didn't remind Parris that he hadn't taken his t-shirt off yet. Clouse was awarded the point and the lead.
Somehow Parris recovered, but man, what a start for the Trojan senior.

It is a great discussion: the power of a superior leg rider. It wasn’t only the Yorktown match, but also the Kasper McIntosh match.
Beating #1 and #2 1-0 is definitely noteworthy.

If I interpreted what I saw correctly, it looked like Yorktown's assistant coach told Hunt that it was his decision. He chose neutral right away. I like the call. He was going for the win, not the field goal for the tie. It didn't pan out - but he put it all on the line.
  19. Thanks
Kookie953 reacted to Y2CJ41 in Strategy Question - Hunt vs Slivka
Slika is very tough on top as evident in his 1-0 win over McIntosh in the quarter-finals.
Not knowing the situation or strategy, Hunt was going to need a takedown to win no matter what most likely. If he goes on bottom, it will take a lot of effort and energy to get out. Maybe it takes 20 seconds, maybe it takes 1:59, maybe he doesn't get out. Even if he gets an escape he will still need a takedown to win and would have limited time in regulation to do that.
With that said giving himself two minutes to get a takedown or maybe a couple stalling calls to tie it up is probably more likely than getting that escape and then only having a minute to get a takedown in the first overtime.
  20. Thanks

It's easy to go with Lee
    Super 32 placer 2x
UWW AA 2x beating a few college studs
    3time state champ
    WNO winner
    Fargo Placer
    Mason won nhsca and flo

I think comparing those statistics on top of everything Blee was objectively better in terms of career. Mason did great but I think numbers show pound for pound blee went out there and won in much more difficult scenarios

Ok well please don't take this serious. I did not put much thought into these silly names. My daughter was bored and I started saying funny names to get her to laugh. As bad as these are, I promise you this is nowhere even close to being the silliest thing Ive done to make her laugh. It wouldn't even crack the top 100!!  This is the most interesting time to do pickems, because as predictable as some of these weights can be some years, they are just as unpredictable in others. One year you may get 7 winners and every guy you picked made it to the Bank. Then the next year you may pick 0 correct and only a few of them even made it to the Bank. Their has been a whole lot of predictable weight classes in the past decade or so. It's pretty easy to do when you have All Time greats like the Tsirtsis and Lee brothers and then you have Angel Escobedo,Chad Red, Steven Micic, Drew Hughes, Shawn Streck, Wesley Bernard,Gelen Robinson,Tommy Forte,Blake Rypel,Brock Hudkins and Andrew Davison. And now we have Mason Parris and Brayton Lee. So it didn't take much knowledge of the sport to pick By of these guys as the winner.I don't believe it will ever be as many "locks" as their has been since Alex Tsirtsis came through. Not only did everyone in Indiana know he was gonna win it all no matter what team they were from, NOONE even thought he'd be scored on so any time an opponent would even touch a leg or literally show any fight whatsoever the whole arena would erupt. I don't think we will see many more years like that or some like the ones of these other guys either. So take your 2 "locks" this year and appreciate them because I don't think we will see anywhere even close to the amount we've seen over the past 10-12 years. Good luck to everyone who has a son or friend in the tournament, this could possibly be the best times of his life. ENJOY

Add to this the notion that there were (2) additional wrestlers at this weight that could have possibly placed if they had not drawn Mills & Garcia in the ticket round at the E'ville SS.
Egli of MD lost to Garcia 4-1 & Willis of Castle lost 5-1 to Mills. When you consider that fact that all (4) qualifiers from the E'ville SS placed & three of them (Garcia, Rooks, Mills) finished 1,2,3, it is easy to see that 126 at E'ville was brutal.

I know we have talked about this multiple times. I just wanted to say thank you to all of the 126 lb wrestlers for staying at the weight and not dropping to 120 or bumping up to 132. (Obviously some couldn't because they had great team mates at the weight above and below.) Watching all 4 of the semi finalists walk out on to the mat was maybe the most excited I have ever been at the state tournament outside of red vs lee. Then you look on the outside mats and realize there are 4 other guys who are semi finalist/finalist caliber level as well, that came up short. All legends in my eyes. Thats the deepest weight class I have ever seen in my 18 years of watching the state finals. Obviously that is debatable but these guys made a very strong argument and have my vote. That was a blast and this is a sincere THANK YOU!
