What a night of wrestling! Hollywood screenwriters could not have scripted a better event from start to finish. I could not have dreamed how packed or loud it would be when I first started planning the event.
The Indiana guys came out ready to scrap and defend their home turf. When looking at the match-ups I thought a few matches would be ugly and we might give up a couple pins. Instead our kids didn't back down and were in all but one match. That just shows the progression of our state as a whole that our best guys CAN compete with the best in the country.
The fans were the best! Cheering for our guys and that place got as loud as ever a few times. It was awesome to see everyone cheering for our guys and not being split up by cheering for kids from only your team or area. There is nothing better than a standing ovation in appreciation of the work these kids have put in over the years in this great sport.
Brownsburg was a great host for the event. Coach Darrick Snyder and Athletic Director Kelli Waggoner went above and beyond to make this event a success. They rolled out the red carpet and many of the USA guys were extremely impressed with not only the new wrestling room, but the gym and everything at the event.
A big thank you goes to our host families who took in kids for the weekend. I know the kids enjoyed themselves and it sounded like the families enjoyed it also. Thanks to the Lee's, Jean-Baptiste's, Cookerly's, Koonce's, Conley's, and Brewer's for stepping up and housing the kids. Also thank you to Nick Wiesjahn for hosting me.
Thank you to our superb referees Jim Russell and Eric McGill. Russell seems to be quite popular with the Flo guys right now, so tune in to FRL tomorrow to hear what they have to say about the event.
We had great support also from our sponsors the ISWA(yes that is not a typo), KC Battlegear, and Invicta Wrestling Academy. Make sure to support these companies as they are here to help Indiana wrestling.
Also thanks to Cody Bryant and Wrestling USA for organizing the USA guys, being an ear for complaints and suggestions, and many behind the scenes help. Cliff Keen athletic did a great job with the gear and I know I have extra that we may give out soon, so be on the lookout.
It was a great night of wrestling to showcase Indiana wrestling and our kids blew the roof off the Bone Zone. I am just hoping I don't get a bill for repairing that roof!

Heck of a promotion for him.   Kinda shocked they didn’t do a much larger coaching search, especially for a Big10 job.  Hope it works out well.  Angel has the name recognition and has coached at a few different programs, but it has also been unclear how much development his time at those programs have garnered.   Hopefully, with full run of the program he can put together a solid staff that can help the Hoosiers make some solid gains.   Plus, can still find a few more diamond in the ruff recruits that can help speed up the rebuilding phase.

I'm never a fan of raising the lowest weight - its not about how many forfeits there are at that one, it is how little some high school freshman still are.
Went to one tourney this year where every 106 was under 100lbs.   Although there were some forfeits, we don't need a 90lbs kid wrestling a kid 110 or heavier
    IMO

Not for eliminating weight classes. Many very good seniors have wrestled 103/106. More weight classes, more participation.

That is true. No sport does.
Other sports don't have weight classes either though.  We are the sport "everyone" can do.
I'm glad those small seniors have a place to wrestle, without the small underclassman all of them would have to bump up and be the tiny kid.
My 98lbs soaking weight wrestler, even if on JV wrestling, wrestling kids that weigh 115 would not be very encouraging to him.  Im trying to keep him convinced now that wrestling off-season at 100lbs will be much more fun for him - i hope.
I don't disagree with what you all are saying. I agree that it is mostly an underclassman weight class.  It is what it is.  Just as 220 and HWT have lots of seniors.  Im just saying I like that an undersized freshman, or even a senior, has a weight class for them.  For the same reason I am a fan of class wrestling - the small school can't help being small - i am a fan for keeping a weight class for the small kid - he can't help being small either.

There have been a ton of interesting topics and threads about the subjects listed in my title...every year they come up.  We are a very passionate group and I think we all agree that wrestling needs to grow.  From my little perch in Rochester, Indiana here is my 2 cents...which my step-dad always used to say "Wouldn't buy me a cheap cup of coffee"...so take it as you will.
    1. I am a class supporter...both individual and team.  I don't think it will solve every problem but I do believe, in my heart, it will affect the numbers of our sport and more kids will participate and benefit from wrestling.  Yes basketball is classed and viewing numbers have dropped BUT, at Rochester, basketball still has a full varsity, a full JV, and a full freshman team.  People may not attend as much as they used to, but kids are still playing.  No offense to our basketball coaches, but we aren't very good and about 5-6 of those kids should really be wrestling.  I believe that those individuals wrestling in a state championship tournament from a Class 1A or 2A school, will bring notoriety to their school, be talked to by college coaches, and ultimately attract kids to give it a shot...especially at the younger levels.
    2. We are fighting a bigger battle than class wrestling and that is a societal change from our youth programs to the HS Seniors.  I love kids, love teaching them, and love coaching them...but the fact is there aren't has many kids to choose from now days that are willing to do what you have to do to just be on the team.  I'm not talking about wrestling varsity.  I'm talking about just being on the team. Very few young men want to endure the physicality of wrestling to wrestle JV.  Kids are used to getting it now or hitting the "reset" button and being able to start over when they lose.  Wrestling requires a ton of work to get what one wants.  Kids don't want to do the work and wait around for 2-3 years to earn their spot...they especially don't want to wrestle year round to have to earn it.  While I don't understand that way of thinking, I do recognize it as an issue.
    3.  I'm going to get crucified for this...We, coaches and lovers of wrestling, have done a really bad job of making our sport fun, marketable, and fan/family friendly to the masses.  I include myself in that as well.
We wrestle too many all day super duals, two-day 10 ways, and too many matches.  At Rochester, we have adjusted our schedule to make it more marketable to kids, families, and fans.  This year it helped with attendance and numbers.  We had a dual with Northwestern and brought in our elementary and MS teams to wrestle before the HS dual.  Had a DJ and spotlights...each kid had their own walk-out song.  Nothing but positive feedback.  We also took some long Saturday's off of our schedule and put in some week night Quads so kids could have their weekend back. That was a hit with parents.  HS season is long...even longer for the elite kids that go year round.  Can you imagine how long it is for those kids with a .500 or losing record wrestling every Saturday and going 0-5, 1-4, 2-3 and maybe earning 1-2 wins or getting forfeits? How many more youth events can we host in a year...especially in Folkstyle?  We got HYWAY, ISWA (From November to April), Elementary Friendship meets, etc.  Yep, I'm guilty as a Coach and a Dad...we take advantage of it. But that doesn't make me right.  I started wrestling at 14. Wrestled the HS Season, went to Freestyle and wrestled as much as I could, but it was over in April. Nothing from May to November unless you made a Fargo team.  Now there is something EVERY single month of the year to choose from.  We want kids to be kids and play other sports but there is something for wrestling EVERY.SINGLE.MONTH.  We don't stop.  The argument is, and it's valid, the family or coach has to choose and know when to back off.  An argument to the argument, and it's valid, is that if it's not available then the family or coach doesn't feel like they need to do it.  Our kids also don't feel like they have to choose.  I'm NOT advocating that we throw the baby out with the bath water, but coaches and our associations should take a look at how we can retain kids, give them experience, and not have an event EVERY.SINGLE.MONTH!! 4.  Bring back the Freestyle and Greco season after the IHSAA State Tournament.  If the ISWA won't give up Folkstyle State, then at least look at a different date.  HS kids don't have to be included in that.  They just wrestled an entire season of folkstyle.  Once IHSAA State ends, have 3 weeks off with no tournaments.  RTC's open all over Indiana and train exclusively in FS and Greco.  Starting in Mid-March, have 5 tournaments on a Saturday or Sunday.  One in the North, South, East, West, and Central for 2 consecutive weeks.  Then 2 weeks of training.  First week within in your RTC, then the second bring 2-3 RTC's together to train.  1 week of tournaments...same as before.  Then the State Tournament.  Be done in April instead of May.  I'm sure this would need tweaking and my weeks might be off...but the idea has merit.
    5.  This kind of goes along with #3 and all of the folkstyle events for our youth, but I believe we need a true youth season.  I'd like to see us go November Practice, December Compete, and have Folkstyle State the same weekend as the ISWA Elementary Duals and then be done with Folkstyle.  Janauary...OFF...no wrestling.  Start them training in FS and Greco in February, no tournaments. Tournaments start in Mid-March and go to Freestyle State in April.  This stuff of going November - December with duals, wrestling state duals over break, then coming right back to the "individual" season from January to March, then freestyle (for those that can't control themselves and just have to do it :)) from March to May...it's kind of ridiculous.  We tell our kids that they shouldn't play tackle football year round, we tell our baseball players that they really can't throw year round...but we have kids at 8-9 years old wrestling from October (most practices start) to May.  Before you tear me up...just think about that...from October to May.  Why is that ok for wrestling but not ok for other sports?
I know there are arguments against my points and we have some kids that want to train all the time.  I get it.  If there would have been year round wrestling in Richmond, Indiana when I was 14, I would have done it.  I love it that much.  I would have hit the RTC's, the tournaments, everything.  But I don't coach me and the majority of our kids and families can't afford to, don't have the time to, or just don't want to train/compete as much as the die hards do.  Do the kids who want to train/wrestle year round deserve the chance to do it, yep, and I'm sure we can all find a way for those killers to do that...heck they will anyway.  But as a group, wrestling can do better to attract and retain those kids and families that don't.  We have pretty much given the masses the ultimatum of either do this to be great or quit...unfortunately I think too many quit.
Side note: This doesn't include summer camps, academies, and off season open mats.
    Just my 2 cents...
    Ready...GO!

Not at all. I think we need to have better defined off seasons, I think we need to practice and train more...wrestle in competitions less.  We need to get away from everything being folkstyle.  I think we need to do a better job of eliminating all day Saturday/Sunday events.  We aren’t losing the kids who are all in.  We are losing the kids and families who aren’t.  There are lot more kids that are middle of the road than killers. We keep losing them...look at the FF data from 2015 to 2018.
A lot of people get on here and argue or complain.  I offered up some solutions.  Sorry if that’s too much reading for you. If we continue doing what we are doing, the data will continue the same trend.

Sorry for the late reply! Got stuck watching awful 8th grade boys playing  3vs3 "Roundball" in class. I love how all 8th grade boys think they are the next Curry, Harden, Ball, etc. When none of them are over 5"8 or 150lbs dripping wet. Why cant I get the next Snyder, Burroughs, NaTo, IMAR, etc. Thats right, Got to love Indiana Basketball. When what I should be allowed to teach is the basic fundamental of the greatest sport on earth. Oh wait, I cant because of liability issues. I will stop my rant now and get to my breakdown of the Penn Regional. I am calling it the TRIPLE CROWN OF HORSE RACING THIS WEEK. Sectionals was the tune up race Mishawaka (Lexington Stakes) and Plymouth (Tampa Bay Derby) for the Final Three Races of the year. Regionals (Kentucky Derby), Semi-State (Preakness), and State (Bellmont Stakes). This should be a real tight Race with Three Jockeys looking for the Win, Penn (14), Wawasee (14), and Mishawaka  (12) all competing for the "Grand Daddy" at the end of the day a Regional Title! All race results will be in no particular order.
Lets Start with the 1st Race of the day:
    Post Time 9:30am
106- Two great young horses looking to mix it up. Should be a great race with the winner setting themselves up nicely for the "Preakness" next weekend.
    Jace Alexander- Wawasee 35-2
    Andrew Sinkovics- Mishawaka 28-5
    Hunter Boynton- Penn 14-7
    Dominic Smith- Plymouth 26-9
Dark Horse Gate 15 Maxx Szucs Clay 24-11
    Post-Time 9:45am
113- This will be a very interesting race but I think all four horse will come from the Lexington Stakes
    Brendon Mark Mishawaka- 26-3
    Evan Light Penn 24-9
    Trevor Penrod Riley 25-5
    David Hudson Washington 14-4
Dark Horse Gate 1- D'Angelo Shumpert Triton 29-4
Got to Get out of Gates Early
    Hudson Washington vs Shumpert Triton
    Penrod- Riley vs Romo Wawasee
    Post Time 9:55am
120- Calling this race will be tight with only three real horses looking to reach the finish line first. Cant call it a photo finish but which horse will stand tall at the end. Setting themselves up for the Preakness next weekend!
    Chris Schuller Wawasee- 28-2
    Vince Sparrow Penn- 22-12
    Alex Coleman- CMA 29-8
    Todd Hardy- Washington 26-12
    Post Time 10:10am'
126- Get those binoculars out and watch the finish of this race. Of the top three horses in this race anyone could win on any given day. Glad I paid top dollar to sit at the finish line for the weekend. Some Horse is setting themselves up at next weekends Preakness. The other three will have to find a way to workout of a tough gate next weekend. Remember these are in NO PARTICULAR ORDER! Granddaddy RACE OF THE DAY!
    Joey Zahl Adams 23-8
    Zane DeVault Plymouth 35-4
    Tanner DeMien Penn 25-7
    Braxton Alexander Wawasee 34-2

132- This is a two horse race from what I have seen this year. Two "Studs" have set themselves apart. Need to battle tough anything can happen!
    Germia Brooks- Wawasee 31-2
    Manzona Bryant- CMA 29-0
    Gabe Weeks- Mishawaka 26-5

    Nate Riggin Triton 30-5
    Out of Gate
    Riggin Triton vs Hill Penn
    Post Time 10:30
138- The 5th race of the day here at the Derby is another interesting race. If I was a betting man (which Im not) I would bet a trifecta on this race, with the top three horses setting themselves apart from the field. But a young horse may surprise some people in this race. Dont think he has enough to place top 3.
    Adam Davis CMA 33-0
    Preston Risner Penn 26-8
    Garrett Stuckman Wawasee 30-6
    Drew Mason Mishawaka 18-13

    Out of the Gate
    Mason Mishawaka vs Felke LaVille
    Post Time 10:40am
145- This is really a one horse field. This horse has stood out all year long. I would take the bet on this horse winning the race and play the odds. The other three horses will be looking for places 2-4.
    Jacob LaPlace- Mishawaka 33-3
    Gavin Banks Plymouth 31-8
    Isaiah Faroute- Wawasee 18-12
    Jeffery Harper Penn 24-9
    Dark Horse Gate 4
    Elijah Peck CMA 30-6
    OUT OF THE GATE
    Harper Penn vs Peck CMA
    Post Time 10:50am
152- I am a betting man here and will take the parlay here. These three horses will be in a race till the end.  It might not be a photo finish but it will be tight till the end.
    Graham Calhoun- Plymouth 39-0
    Aaron Brooke- CMA 27-1
    Joe Walker- Mishawaka 24-9
    Jeremy Williams- Washington 27-7
    Post Time 11:00 am
160- This is a very intriguing race from top to bottom. All of these horses have big wins but also have losses to one another. This race will come down to stamina and technique. Who will be in the top four is the question. I will say that all four horses will come out of the Lexington Race!
    Donya Harris- Washington 27-10
    Ben Kensinger- Mishawaka 2-9
    David Sheley- Riley 37-10
    Colin Wilson Penn 16-9
    Out of the Gate
Gabe Hissong CMA VS Donya Harris Washington
Dylan Deadmon Bremen vs Colin Wilson Penn

    Post Time 11:10am
170- The 10th race of the day is wide open. I think I'll grab my mint julep and sit back and watch, which one of these 4 horses want to break away from the field and end upon top. Pretty sure three of the spots will come from the Tampa Bay Derby.
    Noah Brown Penn 25-6

    James Snyder Triton 30-4
    Xavier Ortiz- Wawasee 22-7

Tecory Gordon Clay vs Xavier Ortiz Wawasee
    Post Time 11:20am
182- Whichever horse comes out on top here will set themselves up with a great starting gate next week at the Preakness. Those that finish 2-4 will have a lot of work to do to make it to Bellmont. This race could also have great implications on the team race as well.
    Max Chaffee- Penn 19-1
    Michael Boland- CMA 19-0
    Blake Davis- Plymouth 17-7
    Alex Castro- Wawasee 32-4
    Dark Horses
    Cody Timmerman Mishawaka 19-14
    Out of the Gates
Blake Davis Plymouth vs Cody Timmerman Mishawaka
    Post Time 11:30 am
195- A deep weight class here and a stumble out of the gate could lead you down a path of no return head to head with a real Triple Crown Winner  (Davidson).  Want to start strong and finish strong! Lexington Stake Race prepared these four horses to move on.
    Rockne Hurley Penn 22-4
    Jonathon Thomas Adams 33-6
    Garrett Sandefer Mishawaka 14-4
    Aaron Williamnowski- St Joe 30-8
    Post Time 11:30

Ok well please don't take this serious. I did not put much thought into these silly names. My daughter was bored and I started saying funny names to get her to laugh. As bad as these are, I promise you this is nowhere even close to being the silliest thing Ive done to make her laugh. It wouldn't even crack the top 100!!  This is the most interesting time to do pickems, because as predictable as some of these weights can be some years, they are just as unpredictable in others. One year you may get 7 winners and every guy you picked made it to the Bank. Then the next year you may pick 0 correct and only a few of them even made it to the Bank. Their has been a whole lot of predictable weight classes in the past decade or so. It's pretty easy to do when you have All Time greats like the Tsirtsis and Lee brothers and then you have Angel Escobedo,Chad Red, Steven Micic, Drew Hughes, Shawn Streck, Wesley Bernard,Gelen Robinson,Tommy Forte,Blake Rypel,Brock Hudkins and Andrew Davison. And now we have Mason Parris and Brayton Lee. So it didn't take much knowledge of the sport to pick By of these guys as the winner.I don't believe it will ever be as many "locks" as their has been since Alex Tsirtsis came through. Not only did everyone in Indiana know he was gonna win it all no matter what team they were from, NOONE even thought he'd be scored on so any time an opponent would even touch a leg or literally show any fight whatsoever the whole arena would erupt. I don't think we will see many more years like that or some like the ones of these other guys either. So take your 2 "locks" this year and appreciate them because I don't think we will see anywhere even close to the amount we've seen over the past 10-12 years. Good luck to everyone who has a son or friend in the tournament, this could possibly be the best times of his life. ENJOY

Trick question? ☺ That would violate the weight management plan. Neither seem healthier than the other. I get your point and it relates with mine. There are some athletes that need the lighter weight classes just like there are some between 250-285. Neither are a majority but both should have the opportunity to wrestle. No other sport teaches better life lessons and that's what I love about the sport.

That’s a shape, but not wrestling shape.  I am sure you know how lineman eat to be heavy and it’s not always healthy. Health and safety were two of the factors unlimited was changed to 275 at the time. Again, I enjoy the big guys at state too. Just leave the light weights alone unless the heavier weights are changed as well. Most matches and local tourny’s have lots of “out of weight class” atheletes between 182-285.

My team is in that sectional and it is night and day to previous years.  We have VERY few kids or weight classes that would be considered "top tier", but there are a few good wrestlers that know what there doing (and yest will most likely struggle at the regional), but I do look forward to seeing several weight classes that have kids who are very competitive at this sectional (126, 160, and 285 come to mind quickly) and most of those kids are just as nervous and anxious as those kids preparing for the Avon sectional.
More importantly though if you are only looking at the top tier kids, how they do competing with each other, you may be missing a piece of the sport that makes most of us smile especially at sectional.  It is the kids seeded 6th or unseeded at sectional who overcomes all odds and their own doubts to place 4th and get to wrestle at regional.  Some of them will have achieved their only goal in wrestling after 4 years taking a beating in practice, never even believing they could do it because they wrestled behind a stud or had 5 studs in the sectional.  That kid will ll be just as happy (and most likely or more so) than most of the wrestlers who lose in the go round or on Friday night.
Weak or strong there is a lot of happiness and tears getting ready to happen on Saturday, but that is what make sectional entertaining and brings a lot of smiles.

Exactly,   I don't think some people see the irony of this comparison.   There's this criticism of these sectionals with a large majority of small schools and a corresponding pride of being superior.  But its really just  a negative byproduct of a single class system where big schools routinely beat up on smaller schools.    And we complain, why cant those small guys just try harder and be better.      Please spare me from bringing up the wrestling version of Hickory High School in Indiana.
