Merrillville  Thoughts:

106: Reitz was head and shoulders better than the field today.  Hildabrandt and Cummings were very impressive as well.  I like Reitz's chances next weekend.

113: Crary and Garza show. Crary looked to be defeated for about 5 minutes and then comes on late with 2 slick takedowns.  I like both of those two to place next weekend.

120: Most controversial weight of the day. Torres gets DQ'd on a questionable slam. I felt he followed him to the mat, but couldn't see if he had the arm pinned.  Torres was up 4-1 at the time of the slam and was in total control of that match. Thought that Clay's coach could have shown a lot of class and done the right thing, but I suppose getting to state anyway he could super-seeded that. Sinkovics was impressive, not sure he has anything for Chad Red. Pleasantly surprised by Dembowski finishing second, nice kid, good family. I have to say that Black was impressive, wouldn't be surprised to see him win gold one day.

126: Thought it was a man versus boys today. Micic show and he was impressive against Davis. Have never seen Lee, but have heard a lot of good things, he better be ready should he get the opportunity because I don't think anyone beats Micic next weekend. Davis finishes 3rd, but will place top 5 IMO.

132: Weak all around. Charithers won, but could honestly see him losing on Friday.

138: Great wrestling all day at this weight.  Hughes wins against a very game Couvicu.  If they wrestle 30 more seconds, I'm confident Couvicu wins.  Fuqua's career comes to an end, he was fun to watch for 4 years.

145: Forte was the best here, I can see Rentas placing top 8.  Pleasant surprise of the day is Sebahar finishing 3rd, looked very good.  Could see him top 8 with the right draw.

152: Macri and Schurg in the semis was the championship. Macri wins in OT, but gets all he could handle. I like both young men next weekend to place top 5.

160: Hughes wrestled poor all day, was still shocked that he lost to Mammolenti, especially after beating him early in the year. Should the real Kenny show up next week, I like his chances to place top 5.  Mammolenti is top 8 for sure.

170: Bates wrestled out of his mind and finishes 2nd, good for him. Lots of upsets all day in this weight, Osborn is top 3 material next week for sure.

182: Jankowski, end of story here. Top 5 talent for sure.

195: Scott looked awesome all day and I was very impressed with Woods. I think both place and Kral has an outside chance.  I think Scott finishes the highest, and could be in the finals.

220: Gelen Robinson show.  It was him and the field was a distant second.

285: I thought Duvall would have something for Streck and I was wrong.  Streck was pretty dominating all day.  I like him in the final next weekend.  Duvall is top 8 material as well.

Gelen dominated Streck so does this mean he could win any class he chose too wrestle? I think so!

is there still the possibility of a BLACK OUT??? I see Hartman wins by DQ of Torres then InjDf out to 4th...how hurt is he and this would make Black the Alt.??? just wondering

According to the NWI times coach Hartman said he believes his son had a concussion.

If he gets to wrestle, he finishes top 8 in my opinion. I hated how his coaches went about hyping Black, but the kid is good.

Yea he wrestled sinkovics better then anyone today he really went out and showed how good of a career he is going to have. Tough day for the brickies but they are young and will have more talent coming up. No "blackout" but nice job Brenden!

Also as a 4 it will be tough to medal. With the other 1s being red(1) knapp(3) and hudkins(5) but I'm sure he will go out and give it his all.

I wasn't too keen on their hype either but it was comical & if Hartman cant wrestle then they were kinda right...but not really and he better hope he don't draw into New Castle...

Sportsfangms: Nice break down of a great day of wrestling.

Just a couple other thoughts. Torres did have have hartman's arm pinned. Not sure if that makes a difference. He did land on that trapped shoulder. My opinion is that it was close but I would not have called it a slam. I'm not sure what I would of done in that situation but I hope I would've given Torres the match.

Overall I pretty good day for the region. Merrillville had 6 qualifiers. CP and Lowell both had 3 and Hanover central and lake central both had 2. The region also had 7 champs.

On a lighter note Cosgrove has to get the best dressed coach for the first 2 rounds. Every year we talk about cool singlets but Bates from south bend Washington had the coolest socks of the day. They were bright green with "170" down one side and "BATES" on the other sock. Also I think Harrison appeared to have the most coaches probably 12.

Looking thru brackets looks like crown point had a rough day?

Some tough draws for them Akers was leading Johnson from Merrillville before Johnson came back in the 3rd great match. Fuqua was definitely the 3rd best wrestler yesterday but also a tough draw. Covaciu wrestled a great match against Fuqua. And I didn't see Donaldson's match until he was on his back and pinned. Definetly a tough day for them.

"but I hope I would've given Torres the match."

That was not an option given to the coach or the wrestler. The trainer stepped in and said he was unconscious and is done, the referee stepped in and said match over. No chance for coach or wrestler to make a decision. When jake was in training room he asked to forfeit the match to Torres. I am not sure how we could have done anything differently. We feel aweful for Torres and his family that his season ended this way.

You are correct coach in the training room it's to late to forfeit the match. And I don't think any referee would tell you on the mat that you have the option to medical default to Torres. But I may be wrong and it would have to be a decision made on the spot to forfeit the match to Torres. I'm sure if you told the referee you wanted to medically default the match they would allow it. Maybe a referee could clarify this.

I will start by stating that I have no horse in this race and was just there to enjoy good wrestling.  However, anyone that called that slam questionable, didn't see it correctly.  From where I sat is was a textbook definition of a slam.  Hartman kid's head was the first thing that hit the mat because his arm was trapped.  I hated to see it because the match was all but over.  Torres kid deserved the win, but rules are there to protect the kids.  There was no lack of integrity on the SBC coaches part.  This kid was knocked out.  I have seen the other side of the slam coin where there is nothing wrong with the kid but the coach encourages the kid to stay down just as an easy way to make it to state.  But that was not the case here.  The Hartman kid didn't come out the next round and wrestle like a world beater.  I think he ended up at the hospital.  I was ashamed of the lack of class that many people demonstrated by booing this poor kid.  The situation sucked for sure, but to boo this hurt kid was plain and simple BS.  The real sorry losers here were idiots that were booing.  Think real hard, because if you were there and booed at a hurt 15 year old, you my friend are true dirt bag and by the sound of things, there were a lot of dirt bags present at Merrillville yesterday.  I also felt bad for the Torres dad that got escorted out.  His pain was understandable but it was most definitely an illegal slam.  No real winners here to say the least.

Terrible situation for both sides. I do believe the rule says that a coach or wrestler may default a match at any time during the match . I think this was put into place for situations like this where a coach may default the match during recovery time if he choses to do so. We saw this happen at State when Gelen Robinson slammed a kid ( can't remember the school} while leading pretty big. The kids coach didn't want to win like that and injury defaulted before the recovery time ran out. Both kids are underclassman so good luck the rest of your careers.
