Y2CJ41
ok what would you rather have? Complete Class wrestling with no wrestle backs at state and I'm sure the IHSAA would take away team state Team Class wrestling individual is still in the same format or Complete wrestle backs so every individual will reach go the fatherest they can and not have to pray for a "good draw" I'm sorry be the IHSAA won't give into wrestling so I'd vote complete wrestle backs. Do your teammates celebrate placing and winning the NAIA tournament? Does your school recognize those achievements? Or do they not even care because they aren't the "true" national champion in college?
NickS
I definitely don't want to get rid of Team State. Although I've never been a part of the Team State Finals, but have been in many Team Regionals. I think the team aspect of wrestling can play a bigger role in the growth of our sport than what people give it credit for.
Y2CJ41
Like they have listened to the wrestleback plans in the past? How was the proposal for wrestle-backs presented? The IHSAA listens to other sport's proposals and I have a had time believing the IHSAA hates wrestling as much as people want to say. If they did not care about wrestling, they simply would not sanction it. How can you expect the IHSAA to listen to the coaches association when barely 1/3 of the coaches are members? The coaches association doesn't even represent half of the head coaches in the state. Its hard to pass a proposal that 1/3 of the coaches in the state are in favor of. He was telling me that the IHSAA would consider wrestlebacks (I think at all stages of the Individual tournament, not sure), but they'd take away Team State. If this was true, you would get an emphatic no from me.

Y2CJ41
How is the IHSAA going to listen to a proposal that only 33% of the coaches are behind? I really don't blame them for quickly throwing out any proposal made by the coaches association when they barely have 1/3 of the high schools represented. The coaches association is not a true representation of the state's coaches and therefore the IHSAA will throw out the proposals.

MattM
So I guess the question is what does someone propose we do that would actually make a difference in the IHSAA listening to the wrestling world if to some the current coaches assiciation isn't the answer? Y2CJ41
Looking at the past three proposals to the IHSAA, we were one vote from wrestle-backs in 2003. Somehow four years later we were shot down 0-12. 2007 APPROVE THE WRESTLING COACHES PROPOSALS The Executive Committee took the following action in response to proposals presented by the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association during the March meeting: Add wrestlebacks to the regional and semi-state levels of the current IHSAA State Wrestling Tournament Series. A motion to approve this proposal was made by John Williams; seconded by Nancy Alspaugh; motion defeated 0-15. 2005 APPROVE THE WRESTLING COACHES PROPOSALS The Executive Committee took the following action in response to proposals presented by the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association during the March meeting: 1. The IHSWCA proposes the implementation of full wrestlebacks, from the quarterfinals, during the state tournament series at the Regional and Semi-State levels. After considerable discussion, a motion to approve the wrestlebacks from the quarterfinals at the wrestling regional and semi-state levels was made by Dennis Bunda; seconded by Phil Hoskins, motion failed 5-12, with Pam Noble, Paul Neidig, Dennis Bunda, Debb Stephens, and Janis Qualizza supporting the motion. 2003 WRESTLING COACHES PROPOSALS The Executive Committee took the following actions in response to proposals presented by the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association during the March meeting: 1. The IHSWCA proposes using wrestlebacks to third place at the IHSAA Regional level of competition. After considerable discussion, John Williams made a motion to approve the proposal; seconded by Dennis Bunda; motion failed 7-7-2. 2. The IHSWCA proposes using wrestlebacks to third place, from quarterfinals, at the IHSAA Semi-State level of competition. A motion to approve this proposal was made by Pam Noble; seconded by John Williams; motion failed 7-7-2. 3. The IHSWCA proposes using wrestlebacks to third place, from quarterfinals, at the IHSAA State level of competition. A motion to approve the proposal was made by John Williams; seconded by Pam Noble; motion failed 4-11-1. 4. The IHSWCA proposes using an open roster for the team members to be weighed in for the Dual Team Competition. A motion to approve the proposal was made by John Williams; seconded by Patrick Mapes; motion failed 0-16. 5. The IHSWCA proposes that the IHSAA allow the IHSWCA to score, announce results, and recognize the top three teams of the IHSAA State Individual Meet as winners of the “Myers/McDaniel Trophies”. A motion to approve the proposal was made by John Williams; seconded by Jim Feist; motion failed 0-16.

MattM
And the reason given for not passing any of these proposals was the IHSWCA didn't have enough support to make this issues valid enough to pass? Or was no reason given and that is what the assumption is? I know people at the IHSWCA have stated in the past that the IHSAA would be more willing to listen if the membership base was more representative of all the schools. I side with the IHSAA on this, whereas I cannot feel confident in a proposal that only 33% of the coaches support. Sure more coaches probably support it, but they do not show their support in the proper way.

KarlHungus
Ridiculous. All I know is that the football coaches association has close to 100% of the schools as members, monthly regional meetings from Dec. thru the springs, regional officers that represent their areas at state meetings. Is it a coincidence that the IHSAA listens and generally approves proposals from the IFCA? The move to a 6th football class will be done the way the majority of coaches want it too because of there organization. Is it going to be harder do organize wrestling coaches. I definately think so but I think we should try harder then we are now.

Should the lack of representation of all schools be a telling sign of why we're behind alot of the "hotbed wrestling states?" If coaches are too lazy to become members of the IHSWCA, what's the chances that these 67% of coaches are doing a banged up job of running their respective programs? Not saying that this is the end all be all reason, but could be a big factor.
Y2CJ41
What is a proper way? Having a greater representation of the coaches through our coaches association. I'll translate that, meaning having 90-95% of the schools with wrestling have at least one representative as a member of the IHSWCA.

snoopy
Last year we had a list of the members and their schools. Could a little survey and questions as to the attitudes done in house answer some of the membership questions. A few area rep meeting might be nice rather than a onetime shot in Indianapolis.
