How long was Harper at Benton Central , because it took him 8 years to win a title at Penn . How long was Vega at Andrean ? How many years was Tonte at Speedway compared to Perry ? I believe Fabio already said it would take more time at a small School , but I bet they would be competitive with any school .

I believe they could . It's been done at MD for a long time . I believe it's the Coach/Coaching Staff , not the size of the school . Look at Mishawaka with Snyder , and now without . Coaches like Tonte , Snyder , Vega , Harper have a proven track record , I believe they could do it anywhere .

When I took over at Brownsburg, we had not placed higher than 7th in the Conference out of 10 teams in several years.  I have only coached at Mishawaka (1500) students and now Brownsburg so I couldn't really speak for what is best for a small school.  Certainly easier with more numbers.

    Here were my first steps:

1.) Communication and Enthusiasm.  Why would anyone be excited if the Head Coach is not?  Answer questions and get people involved.  Have a personality and sense of humor.  More people will work hard for you and get involved on and off the mat if they like you.

2.) Implement our system, our technique, our way of drilling, and our practices at all levels of the program.

3.) More coaches at all levels.

4.) Off-Season - I was told no one would come and Brownsburg was different.  I was committed to being at everything in the off-season whether I had 1 kid or 100.  First year we had a little over 10...now over 30...

5.) Grow your fan base.  Make wrestling cool.  We had 12 people in the stands at our first home meet...several hundred now - DJ, dim the lights, throw out shirts, promo video...hang posters, talk at lunch - do something or no one will.

#PainTrain (This is commonly used at our school now on announcements and between students...football team breaks on it often)...Take chances when you can and grow the sport.

So just a long winded way of saying "hard work"!

All joking aside, Snyder, yourself, and coaching staff are doing great things over there.  Good luck the rest of the way.

My very first varsity meet as a starter was my junior year was the capital city classic. I left practice Friday night at 118.8 and my coaches told me to only eat a very small portion of pasta and drink water. I went home and fell into some temptation (I think it was extra pasta and a package of oreos and some milk) and came into morning practice before the meet at Perry. Oh crap. I was 120.8 and was wrestling 119 pound weight class. I tried to step off the scale before coaches saw so i could handle the situation myself but it was too late.

I put on the heavy gear and went on with regular morning practice. After everyone else went to shower and change, I spent the next 30 minutes jump roping in the shower area still in my sweat gear. As we boarded the bus, I told the coaches "i think i lost the 1.8. I'm fine." They scoffed and told me to stand in the middle aisle of the bus and do burpees until we got there. About a half mile away from Beech Grove, the coaches had the bus driver stop. "May, you know how to get there, right?" I literally had to try to keep up with the bus going 25 mph for the last half mile stretch to beech grove in the indiana tundra. It was snowing that day.

We got to the venue and had 25 minutes until weigh-ins. I begged to let me go check the weight and the coaches said it's smarter to keep the sweat gear on and keep working. I busted out sprints and finally when weigh-ins came... I made it... by almost 2 pounds. I was 117.2. I had lost 3.6 pounds in my tortorous morning.

I came out for my first match as starting varsity at Perry Meridian and I hadn't told the coaches about a wardrobe choice... tights and orange shoes. One of the assistants grabbed me by my ear and said "if you don't win this whole damn tournament the tights are gone." Thank God he didn't notice the shoes somehow.

I was the #4 seed as my career varsity record to that point was about 10-4 with no significant wins. I took out the one seed in the second round and had a barn burner with Warren Central's freshman at the time (who went on to be a state runner up) and beat him 13-12.

Maybe I should have spent my entire career cutting weight at the last second!

PS I wore those dang tights my entire career after that. Earned it.

BeastMode#31 reacted to Coach Peck in Pendleton Heights Wrestling
I wanted to take a moment and thank the Pendleton Heights Wrestling Team and it's Coaches for the kindness, and great honor, they showed me this past Saturday at our Wrestling Invitational.  As many of you know, my wife Bonnie passed away in late August after a battle with cancer.  Anyone who knew Bonnie realized what a wonderful person she was.  She had a contagious smile, loved to make new friends , and went out of her way to help people when at all possible.  There were a number of years when she went to Pendleton to help the Arabian Wrestling Club with pairing their springtime tournament.  She got to where she looked forward to going because she had made friends with a number of the people and she enjoyed seeing them.  Anyway, at our meet Saturday the members of the Pendleton Heights team as well as Coach Cloud and the other members of his staff approached me and presented me with one of their Team T-Shirts.  On the sleeve of the shirt was a rembrance to Bonnie.  Needless to say this big guy was moved.  They all shook my hand and had something to say.  They all seemed happy to be doing it.  I deeply appreciated it, and I will never forget it.  Thinking about the kindness shown is moving me to tears as I type this.  I just want to say, "Thanks Arabian Wrestlers and Coaches for being so kind and for having such class.  I know Bonnie would appreciate it as well."

I am excited to announce that Ancilla College (10 minutes from Plymouth, In) will be starting a wrestling program in 2016. All weight classes are open. Ancilla is a two year college with an enrollment around 500. There is housing available, there is money available, and a great coaching staff. We will be using the Life-Plex in Plymouth for workouts and our home Meets. Contact me if you or someone you know is interested in taking it to the next level.

I think you may be underestimating the son's athletic ability. He started as a Soph at another 6A school and it is my understanding he broke a few records. Even though Perry is not a football powerhouse they play some stout 6A competition. I have never seen him play football, but it wouldn't surprise me to see him starting at Warren next year. At any rate, good luck to the Tontes...the southside won't be the same without them.

I could live with things being exactly the same till Semi-State.  At Semi-State you do a true wrestle back (including for second if needed).  At state you seed 1 & 2's and random draw 3 & 4's.  It would make Semi-State a touch longer, but make things much more accurate.  Makes for a long day at Semi-State, but if you keep 4 mats it wouldn't be that bad.
