hey eshcoach, Toby was IPRA world champion all around cowboy and bull riding champ. i remember his start in high school rodeos. i clowned/fought bulls at a few of his rodeos. that was many years and pounds ago !!

Guy is a legend! Hands like a Mac truck

Are the rodeo guys really tough on top?  I always figured if you ride a Bull or Bronco,   that riding a guy in wrestling would be quite a bit easier.     Thats awsome to see.  I think to succeed in wrestling today, the wrestling coach needs an alliance with the Football coach.   Looks like you guys have that.

Top game is pretty tough, and I believe that’s a huge part of it. And it’s part of their toughness. Unfortunately both have broken their arms doing it.

My 126’s dad was a national champion bull rider and did it professionally!

  3. I was doing some off-season planning today and was realizing how many different directions my athletes go.

I’d be interested in hearing other schools and their activities:

    Edgewood:

    106- Soccer, wrestling, track

    113- FF

    120- FF

    126- Wrestling, rodeo

    132- wrestling, rodeo, baseball

138- (2 guys here) wrestling only. Other wrestling and lacrosse

    145- football, wrestling, track

    152- football, wrestling

    160- football, wrestling, stock car

    170- football, wrestling

    182- football, wrestling, track thrower

    195- football, wrestling, stock car

    220- football, wrestling

    285- football, wrestling, track thrower

  4. Not quite in the "best to never make it to state" category, but Austin Heckman of Edgewood was a 4x semi-state qualifier and 3x ticket rounder. His losses at semi-state were:

    Joe Lee

    Brayton Lee

    Nathan Conley

    Jake Schoenegge

He asked me for film on Brayton Lee his sophomore year I said "just check flowrestling. It's all over the place."

Wish someone could recall any names on this one for me cause it always stuck in my head as an amazing ending.  It was a good 10 years or so back in a lightweight quarterfinals match.  There was 3 seconds left in the match with the the top wrestlers down by 1.  Rather than cutting his opponent like you would expect the top guy somehow just pulled him straight backward on the whistle and got two swipes right at the buzzer to win.  I pretty amazed he was able to pull that off.

Was this Nick Hobbs of Beech Grove on Friday night?

Yeah, I was thinking as much about Friday too.  If you're a 170lber, you don't get to watch a 120 lb teammate wrestle? What if said 120 lber is your brother?  If you have already wrestled in the first session, you can't find an empty seat somewhere or stay with your teammates to watch your brother wrestle?  If mom and dad are there to watch the brother in session 2, where does the brother who has already wrestled go?  That gets back to Y2's point.  Surely there are situations like those.  As much as it is an individual competition, there is still definitely a team element to it.

This is why Edgewood intends on qualifying their entire team for day 2; to ensure we have a giant section of fans for our team.

  7. Today was an awesome day of wrestling at the Team State Duals. I was at the 3A tournament and was checking results all day from the other 2 locations. The team aspect of a good dual is one of the best parts of wrestling. Watching wrestlers sacrifice to cut a few extra pounds or willing to bump up a weight class to sacrifice for their team to try and get the win is really selfless. Watching teammates erupt from a pin and also watching teammates congratulate their teammate for getting beat by 13 and saving 2 team points is fun to watch.

In a year where we were told to stay away from each other, it was refreshing to see teammates jumping up and down in celebration. It made the stresses of 2020 seem distant.

This year took more work than ever. Coordinating with multiple locations, teams droppings out from quarantine, getting weigh-ins coordinated for 40 teams was really a struggle.

It was a relief to finally have the day here. I think JD Minch and Pat Culp deserve some huge recognition for so much time working on this. Dane Fuelling seeding 40 teams is incredible. You honestly are an Indiana wrestling genius. Chuck Barnett sent me 6 revisions on officials assignments and was available always to help with any changes.

Franklin and Brownsburg stepped up to host their class, and I know that added work to their load. But those schools made this happen too. There was help from several people at each location that deserve recognition, and I won’t even try to say them all. But a great day of wrestling all over the state was possible because a lot of people worked hard.

I’ll tell them all thanks personally, although we all may need a 24 hour break from each other.

I got to catch some of the Facebook live from Joe and Mike too, and that was a great add for those at home.

How would that work? Same amount of people are coming to the county. Each school would need multiple coaches at each location. Multiple busses (unless you drop one off and take the other) I don't think the county would go for that.

The Health Department isn’t worried about how many people are in the county. They are worried about how many people are in one specific area ( like a gym) at a time.

our gym has capacity of 200 right now. We can get more in our 2nd gym.

It’s not a fool proof plan. There are issues with coaches and bussing for sure. But we may have to be creative this season.

If half the wrestlers are in the building and half at another building, that would appease the Health Department.

This may not be in the best interest of the tournament, I’m just throwing ideas out there.

Emails went out today confirming the cancellation of this years Al Smith. 😢  The St. Joseph County Health Department will not allow an event of this size.

Is it worth waiting at least a month? Wait and see how the Health Department might change in a month?

Work with a neighboring high school and host 7 weights each?

  10. It will definitely be a discussion at the IHSWCA clinic tomorrow and Friday. I think it will be a huge benefit to talk to other coaches, but to also see what kind of guidance Robert Faulkens may provide.

We have talked about these groups of 4 pods at our schools, but even then my admin mentioned how they couldn't be around each other in the locker room, at meets, on the bus etc for contact tracing. Nearly an impossible position.

No, Jesse decided to go out for the cross country team late.  CP has a great team and I anticipate them running every Saturday in October.

Crown Point will have about half their roster at Super32 this year. Excited to watch them wrestle.

My favorite post in a long time is hearing a dedicated wrestler trying a different sport!

it’s what we preach to other sports to come try wrestling. If nothing else, the mental, break will be nice for him.
