Our guys battled hard and we wrestled fairly well.  Plenty to improve on.  We didn’t have our 113, 145, 170, and 182.

I don't really have a dog in this fight but I don't like this train of thought and for the record, I'm a Sam Riesen fan.

When you have a committee deciding things about other people's programs, then you have an obligation to be able to explain yourself and to do that exact thing when asked.  Maybe not on the board, but the reasoning should be readily available.  It's the same thing with the sectional realignment.  There is a committee that does the leg work for the IHSAA and then the IHSAA decides.  But, when decisions are being made about 300+ programs, then those people have a duty to explain things.  In the last year, I have heard from over 15+ head coaches that Rochester is moving back to the ECC Semi-State.  That's frustrating to me.  Why would other programs know about my program before I do?  Why is it still difficult to get a straight answer?  It'd be nice to know so I can start working on changing our schedule.  Anyway, now I'm just venting.

I'm not a big fan of "secrecy" and I feel like these are always two big decisions that are always kept a "secret".  I have the same gripe with the IHSAA.  Why does everything have to be a big secret.  You make the decision, so stand by it and explain it when asked.  Again, when you represent a larger group and you make decisions on what is and is not best for the people and programs in that group, then you have an obligation to explain your reasoning to that group.

We have 44 at Rochester.  35 Boys and 9 Girls.  We have a few things in place that have really helped our program...

    1.  Club - The kids we have now and have coming were part of our first runner up finish at the ISWA Elementary State Duals to Adam Central.  Most of them started wrestling in Kindergarten.

    2.  Middle School - We are fortunate to have two of our coaches at the MS that are also teachers in that building.  They coach HS and MS.  This has been a game changer.

    3.  Legacy Kids - We have at least 14 kids that have had dad's, uncles, or siblings wrestle for me.

We will have 30-35 kids on our MS Team and we will have close to 80 in our youth programs.

The field house will have plenty of space for 6 mats.  I hope they bring in more seating for teams and fans.  Rochester asked to host it this year.  We have two gyms big enough to hold it and plenty of seating.  Frustrating we weren't at least considered or communicated with before a decision was made.  1A deserves it's own venue.

Only in wrestling, do we get to hear about the unfortunate larger schools.  Every other sport its the unfortunate little schools that get don't have the numbers, the facilities, or athletes to compete.  As the math shows that a higher percentage of the bigger schools get to compete at Team State than the little ones the way it is.  So lets kick out 2 smaller schools out to let the bigger ones in.  Argument would be "bigger schools get their way in every other sport, why not wrestling?"

Let's face it, can't make everyone happy and some teams are going to be allowed in and others unfortunately will be left out.  We have already increased the number of teams competing for a state championship x4, which is great for the sport.  It's funny some solutions to this particular "who's in, who's out" is to go back to something similar to the old "open" 8-team Team state.

Do another tournament, the same weekend for the team's that don't make it to state.  It can be "open" or "classed" and more teams can compete that day.  Good for the sport? sure.  Does it allow every team that wants to compete at state to participate in the team state tourney?  no.  Again, not everyone will be happy.  Allow 12 teams to compete--make the day last forever and water down the competition--and the #13 team in each class will be upset.

Let's face it, the way this Team State tourney is done is pretty great the way it is and I believe everyone leaves each class' tourney confident the best team that day won and a team that unfortunately wasn't invited wouldn't have been champ if only they could have attended.

Decisive victory by a very tough Rochester squad in the final dual over a very solid Cathedral team (45-22).  Very good wrestling from teams from all around the state (Avon, Columbus East, EMD, Tell City, Westfield, Ev North, North Posey, Edgewood, Bloomington S, Laf Jeff, TH North, Ev Mem and Owen Valley).  The event was VERY well run and know they are looking to grow it in the years to come!
