I know I'll get pelted with empties from any poster that starts with "SW" and I respect Mr. Goebel (sic) immensely, but maybe it's time to put a third guy on the show? And might I recommend @ontherise219 for that position? Now hear me out....

How many times last night did he mention "I'm not familiar with that wrestler..." or "IndianaMat ranks him...". Well, the actual ranker does some media stuff for the actual sight that does the rankings oft quoted, and since he does the rankings pretty well it appears, he does seem to know a bit about most/all the wrestlers and not just the ones at the E'ville SS. Again, nothing personal, and as far as the actual call of the finals matches goes I think Mr. Goebel is great and knows his stuff and adds insight, but for a parings show I'd just like to hear a bit more insight/matchups etc and think OTR could provide that. Of course the hour and fifteen minute time frame might be tough but he wouldn't have @Y2CJ41 to throw him off topic.

Like I said, unpopular opinion.. but outside of the ESS dudes there just didn't seem to be much insight or info put out there except "that should be a good quarter bracket".

That’s a real statement brother.  Painful lesson.....but a valuable one.  An early cradle and extremely intelligent wrestling of backing up and down blocking, allowed a very strong...physically mature and battle tested Mazero to squeek past 14 yr old Silas by 1 point.
Admittedly....it was one of the best things to happen to Silas.  It initiated an even deeper sense of drive towards strength training, positioning, and becoming a well rounded wrestler.  Not just a dynamic athlete on his feet.  I’m hopeful every wrestler who reads this....whether freshman or upper classmen, fully realizes......wins & losses don’t define you.  Your response does.

BG coach is not out of pocket as we were told at the seeding meeting that a wrestler did not make scratch weight, but the wrestler had a waiver to wrestle in that class.  After further investigation it appears that the wrestler did wrestle in that class at least one time before Christmas, so he would have made scratch.  His scratch weight was not a "qualifying" weigh-in.  Still a bunch of garbage as many wrestlers/coaches go to a great deal of trouble making sure kids don't weigh-in too light or too heavy from meet to meet just to make sure the weigh-in is "green."

Yes in all years past it was at NC the day after semi state.  It was the Sunday after the sectional last year at CG.   This year, it is the Sunday after the regional at CG.   I also know that in year 2021 it will be hosted by Carmel.

Haven't forfeits always been a part of wrestling? I have no clue on the overall trend or anything like that, but it doesn't seem to me that it is horrendously worse now than it was when I wrestled, or when I began coaching.  All of this stuff ebbs and flows too.  This will be my 11th year as a head coach, and I can say that in the last decade alone I have seen teams that had literally 3 wrestlers on the team at one point, go on to be at team state, and win regionals.  I have also seen it go the other way, teams with a lot of kids go down to a few.
I think A LOT of it is about the "culture" of the sport at the school.  For whatever reason it seems like some schools have it, others don't.  Again this can change with a class, or with various coaches...
I also don't see this as an issue that is small school vs big school.  I spent my first 9 years at a small school, and we very rarely forfeited, not that it never happened, but it seemed easier to get a kid to try it out, or come out to fill a spot.  I now coach at a much larger school, and had two forfeits all year.  I've found communication to be much more difficult at a larger school, and I am in the building. I imagine that getting things "going" is much more difficult no matter  the school if your not in the building.
With this being said once a team culture is established with-in a program it is something that can last for a long period of time.  It is just difficult to get going.  I would also say in my opinion getting the culture right is just as important to a program as having a coach who knows all of the moves in the world.

Apples and oranges with argument above, the other schools take kids from something called a “school district.” When “our middle schools” encompass the greater Indianapolis area, there’s a difference, just saying... 👀 👀 👀
i grew up in Wabash County and wrestled at a small 1A school that fed into the Huntington North sectional and Ft Wayne regional never could get past Tony Roush... A lot of great wrestling in the late 80s and early 90s from that corner of the state!
Really applaud what Jake O’Neill is building in Wabash. But, really glad I’ve lived in the Burg for the last 20 years and been a small part of the local club getting to see Drake, Drew, Logan, Griffin and Thierry and others become the wrestlers they are. Fully understand brother.  Admittedly......the toughest part wasn’t Silas separating himself from other interested “powerhouse” programs.  It was the phone calls to Ersland & Todd.....and of course Angel.  We think extremely highly of these guys and everything they stand for.  But ultimately.....Silas chose the program he felt would best benefit HIM regarding his goals.  He will be a tremendous ambassador for our state’s Wrestling everywhere the sport, his hard work & health, and God takes him.

You can only maximize the talent to a certain degree at schools.  From a competitive aspect it's frustrating when we lose to teams because they have a couple new wild cards on their team.  Look at the top 5 every year at state...How many kids on those teams are transfers?  I don't know the number.

    Jared,

I want to  say Congratulations on a GREAT HEAD COACHING Career Avon, LN, & Zionsville!!  You coached numerous State Placers, State Champs, HS All Americans, HS National Champions, NCAA Div. 1,2,&3  wrestlers, Nationals Qualifiers and All Americans.  You were the only Head Coach during the IHSAA Dual Team State era to take 2 different Schools to the IHSAA State Championship match (Avon, LN) both finishing 2nd....Never could win the big one (Ha Ha)!! There are many more accomplishments you have achieved in your career, but those are the ones that counted the most & that I remember!
I wouldn't be the Wrestling Coach, Husband, Friend, or Father I am today without having you as a friend & mentor!  The true greats in any sport are the ones who give back, and leave it better than when they got it.  You have done a tremendous job promoting our sport, growing it at every level,  at every school you were a HC.  I have truly enjoyed every second coaching with you at LN (memories I will never forget) and the battles coaching against you (even though our wives hated those matches) HA HA!!!! You always bring the best out of not only the athletes you coach, but the opponents you coach against.  I am going to miss not seeing you on Saturdays, it will not be the same!!!! Enjoy the 1-0 record against me, you will have it forever!!!
I can't wait to see you in the Hall of Fame, with all the other great coaches who have given countless of hours away from their families, to do good for others in this sport. Enjoy the extra time with your little ones!!!! I know you will keep giving back, see you on the Pee Wee circuit!!

Feels ridiculous to me.  Garrett has overshot their expectations the last few years.  Unseeded and placing 7th, with two injured starters two yeas ago. This season we were seeded 4th and placed 2nd losing 37-33 to Wawassee.  So, when in vote in consideration you don't vote the returning runner up who has exceeded expectations the last two, three seasons actually...seems pretty illogical.  The "we want new blood in the tournament" would be a pretty crappy argument.

I received a coaches misconduct for approaching the score table to tell a referee that the match score was wrong. Referee insisted that the score was correct and gave me a coaches misconduct. After further review, the match score was in fact wrong and was changed to the correct score. I still received the coaches misconduct. The referee went on the say that I received the misconduct because I disrespected him by walking away from the scores table after he assured me that the original score was correct.

It's a struggle to find that balance. When I coached HS I was blown away by the Kiddie Circuit, now here I am completely wrapped up in it.
It's keeping up w/ the Jones's, you don't want to burn kids out, but you also don't want to take kids to tournaments and get blown away by 8 year olds that train wrestling 14 months a year.
My 8 year old currently does Football (Aug-Oct), Travel Baseball (all year), Wrestling (Nov - whenever) and b/c he had one night open a week now we've added gymnastics. My head spins. I've laid off on wrestling this year compared to prior years out of fear of burnout.
I stress to my parents that I'm not here to develop Bantam state champs, but I'm here to help get your kid to Bankers Life when they are in high school. I constantly preach that it's a marathon not a race and to trust the process. I take kids to national level tournaments w/ The Outlaws and they get smoked but they have a great time traveling, hanging out w/ each other, and seeing new places. But I still see frustration in faces of parents. I know the answer but the answer leads to burn out in most kids.
