At one of the conference tournaments in the region a couple of weeks ago there was a very questionable call on the out of bounds line. The wrestlers were scrambling and there didn't appear to be control as they went out of bounds. The referee awarded the takedown and the coach called him to the table and the referee's response was that "he had a little bit of control".
I was standing near the scores table when this happened.
They even mentioned former East Chicago head coach Bill Kelly in the broadcast. Coach Kelly hit a spladle to win the individual and team NCAA championships for Iowa State.
Andrew Davidson wrestled 220 yesterday. Not sure what he's going for the Al Smith.
Also on a side note it was nice seeing Barry Davis of Wisconsin in the stands yesterday at Chesterton vs. Merrillville.
I think if the referees had the angle that we saw on ESPN it had a better chance of getting overturned. The camera that they were using for that match looked to be at ground level on the other side of the mat. Looking at the replay that ESPN showed it definitely looked like a takedown according to the college rules.
119 in 2006 I believe, had 3 former state champs Ethan Harris, Eric Galka and returning 119 state champ Anthony Williams.
Harris ended up 7th and Galka lost Friday night.
Merrillville's Javier Salas beat Anthony Williams in OT in the semis. That was a great match.
Salas pinned his opponent in the finals that year.
I wasn't at this years tournament but I know in the past they have been reasonable. I've been to some kids tournaments that were way overpriced.
And if you think it was overpriced at Merrillville wait until this weekend.
