    Deepest Weight Class-138
    HM: 106-132-220

    Weakest Weight Class- 170
    HM: 195-285-120

    Most anticipated match
    1. Saul Ervin vs. Kyle Luiguis- Last year Ervin won 3-1 in the finals
    2. Joe Lee vs Burk Van Horn- Indiana’s #1 versus #2
    3. Avery Buckman vs Jaden Sonner Both are defending classic champions
    4. Brett Henson vs Wade Ripple- Possible Semi State Finals match and top ten hwts

    Question to be answered
    1. Can Hinderlifter or Rioux give Kentucky’s stud middle schooler a match at 106?
    2.  Will Van Horn or Lee bump up or down to avoid facing each other?
    3.  Can Mason Miranda pull the upset of Ervin or Luigis?
    4. How good is Sellmer?  He is having a great year in beating Melloh of Cathedral and losing to Rumph in OT.  I can see him getting 1st or 5th as 138 is loaded!
    5.  Who from Avon will have a mediocre tournament but make it to state?  Last year Jacob Clark finished 5th at Mater Dei but 7th at state.  Conley finished 5th at Mater Dei and was a SQ.
    6. Most importantly, who wins the team race??  Union County beat Castle worse than Mater Dei did.  Team Rankings- Union County #1, Avon #2, Mater Dei #3.

How many state champs will come from the classic? Every year seems to produce around 3-7 state champs.
Predictions- I say 9 state champs

    #1 Avon Asa Garcia
#2 (KY) St. X Nate Wheeler
    #1 (KY) Union Saul Ervin

A story worth your time.  Cory is a great kid with a great heart...

    http://www.thestarpress.com/story/sports/high-school/2016/11/27/mni-1124-cory-cooper/94163276/

MUNCIE, Ind. — From first through fifth grade, Cory Cooper was in the gifted program at Storer Elementary School. When the program shifted to another school, he noticed how sad some people at the school were to see it leave — and how different that reaction was when the special education program transferred to a different school in similar fashion.
In Cory’s mind, everybody else had it backwards. The Storer community was hurt more by losing the special education program than his gifted program, he thought, because of people like his younger sister Madison, who is developmentally challenged.
That was about seven years ago, and Cory’s mom, Terri, still remembers what her son said that day: “Wait a minute, you didn’t cry when my sister left, why would you cry when I leave? That’s who you’re missing out on, getting to know her.
“I learn something from her every day. She doesn’t learn something from me every day.”
Cory, now a Central senior with a bevy of academic opportunities, is a “top-notch,” wrestler, according to his coach, Mark Scott. And that’s the third-most impressive thing about him, Scott says, behind the 4.0 grade-point average and  his extensive involvement in unified sports so that he can hang out with his sister. “It’s just amazing to see an individual spend so much time with their sibling and care for her,” Scott said.
After they were born 14 months apart, Terri would lay Cory and Madison on the couch as babies and they would wiggle closer to each other until they were touching. Madison couldn’t talk or walk until about five years ago, so Cory read books and tried to learn sign language and then teach her. They developed their own language.
“When she couldn’t talk, he would come to me and say, ‘Maddie is hungry or Maddie is thirsty,’” Terri said. “And I’d be like, ‘No she’s not, how do you know?’ He’d say, ‘Because I just know.’ So I’d ask her, ‘Maddie are you thirsty?’ And she would nod. … They were just connected, he knew what she needed when she needed it.”
Even as doctors predicted that Madison would never walk or talk, Cory remained steadfast in his belief that they were wrong. He would tell his mom, “(The doctors) don’t know, mom — I know.”
About five years ago, Madison overcame her speech disability and motor issues and “came out of her shell,” Cory says. And Madison has made up for lost time; Cory says he can’t go down the hallway at school or around town without spotting her and saying hi, and he happily admits, “She’s way more popular than I am.”
Cory has gotten creative with his schedule, typically arriving at Central between 6:30 and 7 a.m. each day to work on homework so that he has as much time as possible after school for wrestling and unified sports. He is involved in nearly as many unified sports (golf, volleyball, softball, bowling, track, swimming) as AP classes (English, statistics, calculus, government, economics, physics and biology).
“Doctors told her she’d never be able to read, talk or walk, now she does all those things perfectly fine,” Cory said. “She’s an inspiration to me, really. I feel like if she can do stuff doctors said was impossible, I can make time out of my day to have fun with her.”
Cory had been begging his parents to get involved with Special Olympics and unified sports since Madison was around 8 years old, and about two years ago, they finally relented. Now they can’t imagine life without it. There are some weeks in the summer that they will have some sort of combination of sports five days per week.
Cory, who is coming off a close loss at wrestling semistate as a junior, is 5-0 on the mat this year for the Bearcats. With a 33 ACT and a weighted GPA of an estimated 4.5, Cory doesn’t plan on wrestling in college as he has his sights set on MIT or Yale. But ultimately, his mom predicts that he might stay close to home and attend Purdue instead — so he can stay close to Maddie and stay involved in unified sports.
At church on a recent Sunday, the pastor called some of the younger people up to the front and asked them to share with the rest of the attendees what they were thankful for, since Thanksgiving was just a few days away. Some said their family, some said food.
When it was Madison’s turn, she exclaimed, “Cory!”

Nick is a great wrestler and a better person, but with MD history he is not their top guy. Matt and Blake deserve to be on the top. IMO he should of stayed and wrestled for a state championship in this great state. HS comes around only once, enjoy the journey.

sorry dude. IMO a swing and miss on drew hughes as 2nd runner up. Red is #1 at 132 and won his 4th. But hughes has done it all this season both during and after the hs season. he has been a road warrior as well maxing out his frequent flyer miles "making weight" and winning. Getting his college plans set hasn't slowed him down either. There is NO "dig me" in this kid.  For me if there's a face of IN wrestling the we project to the national wrestling community in 2016 I'll take Drew Hughes!   All that and a bag a chips!!

As a Mater Dei fan, I have witnessed tremendous battles waged by the Wildcats against the top teams in Indiana.  Like most fans, I’m thrilled when we win and crushed when we lose.  However, I always appreciate great wrestling, and great programs.

How do the top programs, year after year, seem to never really have “down” years?

It seems like they have common threads, beginning with the coaches.

Mater Dei annually competes against hall-of-famers Bob Harmon of Castle and Bob Hasseman of Franklin.  It seems like every year we also see the likes of Jim Tonte, Brad Harper and/or Dave Maldonado. So, what do they have in common?  For one, they are old school.  Their athletes are in-shape, hard-nosed and disciplined.  By and large, their personal conduct is outstanding.  Why is that?  I’m guessing because that is what their top-tier coaches demand.

For example, Shawn Streck, by all accounts, is a great kid.  By his own words, he engaged in a regrettable action at state.  What did Coach Maldonado do?  Although I can’t read lips or hear his words, if you review the video and watch his reaction, you can bet he was NOT saying “Oh, you are just a kid, it is okay.”  Young Shawn felt what it was like to have his chest poked a few dozen times and have his butt chewed.

It seems like the best programs hold their kids to a higher standard.

The coaches seem to be in it for their athletes, rather than some sort of ego magnification.  I have watched Bob Hasseman coach at the Mater Dei Classic for 15 years.  At the end of this year’s tournament, I was speaking to a friend when Hasseman approached him.  It took me a few seconds to realize who he was.  Since I view him from the stands, and do not have a particular reason to look at him, it would explain my momentary lack of recognition.  I think what this means, for Bob Hasseman, is that producing state champion wrestlers and teams is more important than Bob Hasseman being the center of attention.

When you speak to kids that populate the top programs, you will consistently hear the word “team.”  In Blake Rypel’s post-match interview, he didn’t talk about himself, but about how he was part of a team and how his team helped him.  Imagine that; crediting others for your success…  The concept is:  if my team is better, I am better.  If I put my team first, everything else will work out.

There is more than one way to accomplish any task.  If hashtags, burger king crowns, non-stop self-promotion, “I, I, I”, “Me, me, me” and/or emulating professional wrestlers/managers work for you—have at it!

The perennial top teams take a different path.

Well i guess im too "old school" to relate to the antics that happened at the end of the match. I was always taught to act like a respectful contestent win or lose. My coaches and Dad always said when you win a match dont disrespect the sport...school...opponent and when you lose dont do it either. If i felt the need to celebrate i did it amongst my teammates out of the spot lights. I wish Red the best, but i think he has a lot of growing up to do.

I have seen him wrestle, know he is a great athlete but have never talked to him.   After his loss on Saturday he came up to my son Mason Parris and said good luck go get 3 state titles.  I think that says a lot about his character and I have a new found respect for this young man.  I want to wish you luck in the future, and we will be following your career at Purdue.
