In The Bleachers reacted to alcorntr in Bethel and Cooper
Since no one is coming to the defense of Austin Bethel, it looks like I will...
1st point- The injury time was due to a medical condition that Austin has struggled with for 4 years. It is a huge accomplishment that he has been able to continue to compete when after his freshman year it was thought he would never wrestle again. The injury stoppage was MY call to check on the health of MY wrestler. I will not comment any further due to confidentiality.
2nd point- We used ALL of our injury time so that we would not stop the match again. If we had to stop again, we would have defaulted the match. We, Mt. Vernon, do not win that way. We do not break rules or take dives to win matches.
3rd point- The two stoppages AFTER the injury time were due to blood time. That is not on myself or Austin. The official saw it and HAS to stop the match to tend to the blood issue. If anyone watched Ripple's match with Henson, we were on the unfortunate end of that blood time...and we are not complaining about that nor would we be had we lost.
4th point- As to the remarks on his conditioning...I invite you to come watch our running, swimming, and live sessions and ask you to see who goes the hardest, the longest. Austin is in great shape and many don't see that due to his style of getting pins early in matches. For the record, he had Cooper pretty close to pinned (if not pinned) 3 times in the first period. Had that call happened, like it should have, this post would not exist.
Lastly- Neither Austin, the ref, or myself broke any rules during this match. It gets under MY skin that anyone would take a shot at a kid like this. This senior deserved his chance to finish the match even if it was on one leg. We are proud of Austin and all of his accomplishments. He became the FIRST wrestler in our school's history to qualify for state 4 times! That is what I will take away from this weekend and that is worthy of praise, not criticism.
Congrats Austin & Wade!! You guys make MV proud!!
Tim Alcorn
Mt. Vernon Head Wrestling Coach
Y2,
I respectfully ask that this post be haulted before it takes any turns for the worse. I know people are entitled to their opinion, but I think this week leading up to the state finals should positively focused on the kids.

In The Bleachers got a reaction from awood2 in Indiana's Most Dominant Big Man, EVER?
No your are right Maurer doesn't belong in thi's topic because he is the only 4 time state championship that indiana has that went from both ends on the spectrum on size.
And before you say that he wasn't a small guy 130 isn't a big guy...
Just my opinion.
And Dexter Larimore was also a 2x time state champ I believe along with the already mentioned runner up as well.

Dark horse teams. I think Yorktown and Penn beat Cathedral this year, and Penn takes the whole thing.

So it was asked and another topic and so I will ask. Is Hudkins back 100%? Didn't get to see him since the return and was wondering if we can expect the outstanding performance that he shows on the mat. Kids a stud and hope that he is feeling like a champ.

In The Bleachers got a reaction from Tim Konrath in State Predictions and most anticipated matches
Egolf was pinned by Bethel in the 1st and Lee pinned him in Semi State. And we will see what Bethel can do with Knapp Friday night. I say Bethel vs Lee in the finals three weeks in a row.

Are you kidding me? Nick Lee is pound for pound the best wrestler. I have a question for you James wrestled Red in the off season and won do you know what weight class that was at? 132! Why didn't James wrestle it this off season? Why is James nationally ranked at 132? And by the way he is also ranked well under Nick on the rankings as well. Just my opinion but Nick Lee has yet to see competition and James has seen it this year.

If you have 10 years of experience and you are still that bad there is a serious problem with you. And it shouldn't take 10 years to figure it out. There we're some refs at sectionals that flat out did not know the rules. You might say "oh it's only sectionals" but IT MATTERS. It effects each wrestler's future throughout the tournament. It could mean the difference from regional qualifier to state qualifier.
If there is a written exam that is OPEN BOOK and you get an 80% on it, you should not get your license. You should know 80% of the rules without having to use the book. It is your job. You should also be able to do 5 sit-ups and be able to bend over.

Everyone keeps saying that Bethel over B. Lee was the biggest upset of the tournament. But I say the refs were mine poor officiating. I'm sorry to say it but they messed up major yesterday. I am not even talking about the bad calls of what is and isn't a takedown. Or how they awarded takedown and then almost a minute later take it away. But how an 18 year old almost got paralyzed had he went down at a slightly worse angle then he already did. I don't believe Joe Lee did anything with evil intentions against Todrank in that match but people in the stand were yelling potentially dangerous well before it even got to that point and the ref didn't stop it until after he got hurt. There has to be away for refs to be held a countable for their calls some times. Or have we forgot these are just kids in High School?

no offense but your subconscious wrote down Nick Lee as your 1st FTL in the 138 weight class instead of his brother Joe.

I personally think that Egli is more likely to beat Hudkins then Ferguson. I think that Ferguson will beat Egli if they meet up again.

In The Bleachers reacted to InSpectator in 120 Will be fun!
Evansville – Ferguson, Egli, Hudkins, Gomez
I know this could go several ways with Hudkins likely being the favorite. I think Egli has what it takes to beat him, and I think Ferg has a chance to avenge his loss from Regionals.
