Agree, change is needed. Another thing you see is some coaches going to the table multiple times which also gives their wrestler a breather. Not saying coaches can't go to the table for legitimate concerns, but some teams/coaches do it way too frequently and consistently IMO.  Usually during tight matches and tournament time.

Predictable though. No surprise here. As i said it is disheartening with the disparity in talent between the two clubs. No contest.

Anyone who believes Indiana wrestling isn’t classed, I disagree with you.  Wrestling is classed all year.  Small school programs generally have few opportunities to wrestle the large schools…maybe their JV team.  Large schools typically don’t schedule dual meets with small school teams…why would they?  Most of the time, it wouldn’t be competitive.  Also, school conferences are typically set up among schools of similar size.  Wrestling is classed all season.  It’s just the IHSAA state tournament at the end of the year that suddenly isn’t classed.

I've coached at a small school for nine seasons now.  Having to face off against huge school programs in sectionals absolutely hurts our participation.  I coach two types of kids.  "True wrestlers" and "guys who wrestle."   True wrestlers, they love it and are committed no matter what.  But "guys who wrestler", newer/developing wrestlers, when they see the better guys on their team who have been competitive all year get smashed, many of them wash out or check out.  They just chose to focus on other sports...guess what, they pick ones that have a classed state tournament, where their small school typically does well and gets a lot of attention.

When the "guys who wrestle" start to wash out, then your "true wrestlers" have fewer and fewer training partners...it doesn't matter how hard they work.  When they have no one to wrestle that can push them or no one to wrestle at all, you're not going to be competitive against wrestlers from large schools that don't face this problem. There's always rare exceptions, amazing kids, but this is the general result for small schools that are grouped with large schools at the sectional and regional level.

It's a fact, large schools more consistently produce elite wrestlers than small schools.  There’s a number of factors, but the single greatest factor is rooted in the nature of wrestling. Wrestling is the only sport where you compete as an individual, but the training and development aspect of the sport is 100% a TEAM activity (you cannot train alone).  Large schools with large rooms full of talented wrestlers can train at an “academy level” within their own program.  This is a significant advantage and allows large schools to more consistently produce elite wrestlers.

My opinion remains the same. With the depth of talent Indiana now has we need to find more opportunities for these kids to make it to State. For themselves and for the schools that work hard. If we can’t ever get wrestlebacks and/or more State qualifiers then we need to start looking at classing the State. Times have changed and so have our wrestlers. It’s time to do what is right by them.

I think it’s the showing up 30 minutes late, FF multiple weights when guys were weighed in, AND leaving early. One or two of those okay, but ALL three at  team state is hard to ignore.

Rochester is far and away the best team in 1A this year and would make some serious noise in 2A.  As far as seeding went, West Central went into this tournament in a no-win situation.  I was honestly just hoping for a top four seed after edging out a banged up Rochester team at the Joe Burvan Duals.  If we would’ve been seeded below Rochester, I guarantee there wouldn’t be one West Central supporter complaining about that.
WC belonged in the small gym all day long with the product we put on the mat today.  I do not post on Indianamat, I just look like thousands of others do.

However, being from one of the smallest schools in the state, competing with the great programs we did today (and in 2014, 2015 and 2023), it’s always been humbling and great for us.  Congratulations to all teams that competed today.

    Questions-
How much will bumping come into play?
Can Brewer and Forrester avoid being pinned agin by the Clark brothers?
Can Henry rebound from a near loss against UR Mater Dei kid to get the bonus points BB needs?
Can Shephard prove the first match when he beat Ison wasn't a fluke?

Tossups (pretty much every match) but 106 and 175 will be huge!
Will Washington be in the lineup? Baca and Jones have wrestled today. Who gets the nod at 145?

RAJR reacted to MattM in Girls Semi State Draws
I know a few weights at certain locations only had one entry, which would explain why they would advance out of Regional without an added win going on their record.  In a couple of girl's cases, they may have been pulled back into Semi-State to fill a hole in a weight class even though they have not had a win this season.

As far as why a female wrestler would not have any matches during the season entered into the Regional brackets it may be due to not wrestling any type of varsity match before Girls Regional, not being entered into a girl's event before Girls Regionals, or a coach not entering in the wrestler's record in time.  Other than that I wouldn't know for sure.
  19. Thanks
RAJR reacted to Y2CJ41 in Girls Semi State Draws
If there are 4 or less wrestlers at regional, you didn't NEED to win a match to advance.

Another way to see seeds, depending on how the tournament is set up, is to click on information -> auto seeds, then select the weight class. It lists them in order and all the criteria relevant info.

Brackets are being uploaded now it took me all of last night and since early this morning until just now to get the correct girls in. They will be released sometime tomorrow depending on how fast we can get them in. A lot of girls are going to be excited for an opportunity to get a second shot at the coveted state title.
