Mendez is in 6th grade, his wrestling partner Colten Drousias is an 8th grader and is going to do some great things next year if he stays in Indiana. Hanover screwed up there. They didn't just lose the Drousias family, they also lost the Mendez and Roberson families wrestling for them.

I think its safe to say if you use #'s or not that these along with the kids from MCWC and the rest of the kids from the state that have made the Heartland Teams going out to Council Bluffs April 15-17 are going to make some of the best teams we have sent out as a state and potentially make a push for the best ever finish of 3rd place (2013 Matt Brewer coached and lead Team IN squad).  To all IN 6th and under kids going out......................................#LetsDoThis #MakeINproud #Represent

Red has nothing to prove, you are right.

However when you accept an invitation to a prestigious event you make a commitment to also make the weight. The committee paid for his hotel, a FLIGHT, meals, event activities, and gear for him to wrestle. In total he probably received around $750 in perks to wrestle. Then when you show up 9lbs over weight and don't attempt to make it there is a big issue. To compound it we as a state were there and it made not only Red look bad, but our whole state. It was NOT a fun conversation with the committee, nor was it in my itinerary for the weekend. To put it rather bluntly it was an extremely embarrassing situation to be a part of and there is no other way to put it.

That will teach you, maybe you should start making them have 2 qualifying tournaments.  You cant have that many good kids at a tournament it isn't good for the state! Ask ISWA!

Indiana has NEVER participated as a team in this event. The invitation to attend comes from many factors with the potential strength of the team as one of them. They also need a sponsor that will cover some of the costs related and organize the team along with other factors such as how many times a state has been invited. The biggest reason I pursued this was because we have a fantastic senior class and I wanted to "show them off" on one of the biggest stages.

Dang!!! Again, I had no clue of what the outcome would be. I know that your boy is a stud, and will have great success in the future. Not having him on the schoolboy national team is a BAD thing. I just figured that calling may open eyes to your situation. For what its worth..... I'm sorry that you are in this situation. I know you are doing the best for your boy and Indiana wrestling. You are a huge reason, why the Elementary team will be very good this year (got kids out). See you guys soon.

I just got off the phone with Louis Rosbottom and he denied my request for 1 tournament exemption.  My argument was that we set our schedule when they set their schedule on their site.  We set aside this weekend and next, but then Penn moved there tournament just a week ago.  By this time we already made other commitments and also passed on wrestling on Bailey's national dual team march 26th.  I asked for an exemption for the 2 weekends that we are wrestling for ISWA's teams(middle school nationals and heartland duals).  I asked him why they are punishing a wrestler that worked his butt off to make both these teams as a 6th grader.  He said there will not be any waivers.

I also offered to pay host tournaments entry fee and he stated that it is not about money, but about wrestling opportunity it gives all the athletes.  Well then they should make sure there is a tournament offered every weekend. I just cancelled our hotel for Columbia City this weekend because if we can't get 2 in then why go to any of them.  Sucks it has to be this way.  I was bringing a few kids with me that were in the same boat, oh well.

We could careless about wrestling in the state tournament and going for a triple crown, it is really about not getting to wrestle in the schoolboy duals.  They can keep this dumbass rule if they want, but they need to host tryouts for schoolboy duals to insure that the best kids are represented on that team.

Region should be capitalized in this case because it is a definite location, make sure you get yourself together before you call someone out. Here's a literary term for you to learn, it's called irony, like calling someone out for their "non-English" skills and then you yourself having trouble with simple grammar rules.

I have to agree with Y2 on this. We have a young wrestler that is going to Iowa back to back weekends then to Illinois for the middle school duals starting on March 25th thru April 10th weekend. That being said that leaves him two dates that are fairly close to his home to get the freestyle tournaments in(within an hour and a half). That will give him one weekend off not including this coming weekend between now and freestyle state. We will try to petition for a waiver either way and hope common sense prevails.

Actually there were quite a few wrestlers that went to Fargo last year that didn't go to freestyle state.

By my count there were 15 guys that didn't wrestle at freestyle state, nor earned a spot at Central Regionals that went to Fargo.

Yes that is 100% correct...you have 5 weekends to get 2 events in...Folkstyle however has 9-10 weekends (9 on our schedule the ISWA removes events after they happen so I cannot get a solid number) We have all suggested that they should move the tournament back to allow more weekends so they can work around the bigger national tournaments.

And I believe that is one of the big issue the ISWA is trying to solve. How do we get more wrestlers and better competition at the local tournaments? When numbers and talent levels are low at these local events (especially compared to what you get out of a club/academy practice) many people don't believe it's worth their time to take an extra day out of their week, pay more money, and get just a couple low quality matches in after several hours of wait time. That thought process has created a domino effect which has leaded to the low number of events we have had in the last few years and several clubs no longer hosting events.
The ISWA is attempting to figure out a solution to draw these club/academy kids to more local tournaments. This will tincrease the events depth and thus attract other wrestlers to attend. Thus improving participating numbers state wide, which will lead to more clubs wanting hosting events, and improve IN's Freestyle/Greco level as a whole.

The ISWA current idea to improve numbers is the 2 event rule to participate in state. Obviously this is not a solution that everyone agrees with. But, from what I am seeing the biggest complaint about this isn't the 2 event rule, but rather the low number of events and limited time frame in which a participant have to fulfill the requirement. Hopefully the ISWA will notice this and take those two issue (length of season and events available within a reasonable distance) into consideration in the future.

Clearly there are other states which found solutions to this same issue that still allow them to field competitive national teams.

Matt - I spoke with the big guy from the southern reaches of the state regarding this inane rule at the 2015 FK state meet at BD. I had also previously contacted 2 regional reps and neither replied back via the email address listed on the ISWA website. Neither did any good.

So, now I'm headed up to Columbia City this weekend with my son, who will not have any matches b/c of his age/wt class. Then, having Easter weekend off, then USAW Nationals, AAU Elementary Duals, then Heartland Duals and hopefully get one tournament in before the second weekend in May. All the while, missing an opportunity at OH TOC or Viper Pit b/c of having to go to a local FS tournament with no matches.

There was a thread last year (too lazy too look it up) that discussed that most of the #bangers get more from their academy practices than from these local tournaments. Not sure if that is the way to go, but definitely having a requirement for 2 local tournaments is a bit antiquated...

    So... what is the resolution?

I'm held off long enough commenting on this topic, but it is time after reading an email tonight.

So I ask a kid about joining the Gorillas for the Scholastic Duals. The response I got was, well I don't think I can because I need to get my two local tournaments in. Why is that you ask? Well this young man wants to take the SAT/ACT...to get into college maybe. This young man wants to go to Prom and not have to spend the weekend in a gym at the same time. If he just does those two things, he only  has three open weekends left to qualify for freestyle state. Don't forget about spring break or possibly even some heathen want to have a free weekend in the spring.

ISWA, you have once again dropped the ball and are hurting the kids more than anything. The Scholastic Duals is a great event for kids to wrestle top competition, but instead you are forcing kids to decline so they can wrestle two MAYBE three matches a local tournament.

What will it take for people on the board to have common sense? Even the old method of placing top 4 is better as you only needed one tournament.

I'd probably get more out of talking to a wall, but I just want everyone to read this and see it for themselves instead of a private meeting in Indy.
