mhelmins reacted to indypharmd in Does Indiana Wrestling Need Divisions?
Having spent a bit more time in Iowa over the past few months, I've spoken to quite a few other UI athlete's parents about how Iowa HS sports offered and believe there's some interesting tidbits that Indiana may wish to ponder.
1. Schools let athletes compete in more than one sport in a season.
2. Track and baseball are not in the same season.
3. There are four sport athletes (and a few 5 sport athletes) given #1 & #2 above.
4. Not every team or individual makes the post season, decreasing number of tournament weekends.
5. They play state final games and wrestle state finals series during the week due to multiple class structure.
My kid wanted to play MS basketball but was told by school admins he had to choose btwn wrestling or basketball and wouldn't be allowed to do both. Choice made for him.
During late elementary years, he really liked baseball. Could bang them over the fence before anyone else in Little League, but daddy ball politics soured that really quickly. Started wrestling GR/FR during "baseball season" and a few years later placed at Fargo...
Do think that multiple sport participation can help combat burnout for athletes later in HS - often different friend/teammate circles, pressures/expectations are different, etc.
However, if the kid desires to get to an elite level with aspirations of making it to college to compete, then extra time, practices and sacrifices have to be made to reach that dream. In Division 1, football offers 85 full "headcount" scholarships and basketball has 13; then all the rest of the sports have equivalency scholarships: wrestling 9.9, baseball 11.7, etc. So, if the goal is to go on a ride to college, play the numbers math -- baseball is not it if you're not a pitcher or Babe Ruth...
My kid was lucky he had a choice whether to play football or wrestle collegiately in the B1G, but the wrestling training in the "off season" is what prepared him to be able to make that choice and specifically with the training that Chad Red (C-Red) provided which is so much more than what is only on the mat...
So rather than pressure kids that have dreams to wrestle after HS to play baseball, run CC/track, etc., help them find a way to train and travel to get those opportunities presented to them through their body of work.
When speaking to parents with young kids, I often suggest 1 team sport and 1 individual sport to narrow down to as they get closer to middle school which usually works except for baseball where the pressure is for year around training and travel teams. (There's a good reason DSG and other companies are heavy promoters of youth sports... hahaha...) The intense schedules of basketball travel & baseball travel are atrocious... At least w/ wrestling off season tournaments, you get to choose whether or not to go and it doesn't impact the team, etc.
So, circling back around to the divisions question... How's this sound?
Make 2 divisions, Eliminate sectionals Must qualify for a regional and add wrestlebacks (maybe throw a "true second" round in for seeding purposes and extra drama) & advance 3 to state Run state over multiple days w/ wrestlebacks but no true second round for state finals

In all fairness to DawgPoundRed, there are actually six Bulldogs in the finals. So he was close.

mhelmins reacted to TightCradle in Middle School Period Times
I think 1/1:30/1:30 is the best option although I have no issue w consolation matches in tournaments going 1/1/1 for time.
1/1/1 is very short. Kids are working on skills and this doesn’t give them much opportunity to get better.
A 2 minute first period is a waste. There will either be a first period takedown or not. 1 minute is adequate to figure that out.

mhelmins reacted to Christopher Bohn in Regional Hot Dog review. Allegedly the best hot dog in the area.
I returned to Hobart high school to enjoy some Regional #1 wrestling, and, more important, check out the hot dogs. First things first, on my first trip to Hobart, I do believe they did slip me a polish sausage, which is funny, because that's the same line my ex girlfriend gave me when I caught her cheating. Anyway, I did enjoy this hot dog better, but, there was one thing. Both dogs I got were Luke warm at best, so that did impact the score. The regional hot dogs get 5.75 slices of pizza outta 8. Now, I did have a guest reviewer, my kid Chris Jr. and this is how that interaction went.
CJ "those hot dogs were good" he stares back into his phone
Me " they were? Why?"
Cj - annoyed sigh
Me " tell me"
Cj- annoyed grumble
Me "how many slices of pizza?"
Cj "7, I guess" back to phone.
Next stop, semi state at East Chicago. It feels like I was just there. Thank you for reading.

Qualifiers are a great idea, but are disorganized and very little info is put out. Heck they're not even on track yet

I said nothing about him going to CP...... I mentioned (jokingly) that if the travel to Evansville for state (joke) was an issue then CP could stop over in FW and pick him up.

mhelmins reacted to MattM in Thoughts on Possible College Rule Changes?
It could be as simple as stating them back in neutral after say 20-30sec of no top scoring occuring. No escape in this instance since it wasn’t earned, but just a stalemate of sorts and restart. That would be similar to freestyle but with a little more time to work. You still accumulate riding time along the way, but just can’t milk it out without getting additional takedowns.

mhelmins reacted to CookieMonster99 in Incoming freshman
My son will be 17 his entire Senior year. We considered a hold back, but ultimately went ahead and sent him into high school anyway. He's currently a 14 year old freshman with a 22-11 record, Sectional Champ and Regional Runner-Up. Holding him back would have gained some competitive edge going into next season for sure. But we considered his maturity and intelligence and realized that holding him back would only stall his progress. We pushed him head first into the fire, and he is gaining valuable life lessons because of it. The adversity he is experiencing and overcoming will only help him in life after high school.

mhelmins reacted to XCard in Long Day Ahead for Northern Freshman/Sophomore Qualifier @ Hobart
Looks like this Elementary State Championship qualifier is going to be hosted on the same day, in the same place. This was already a pretty long event in the past few years, get ready for it to be crowded and I am guessing a very long day. Not sure what purpose this Elementary tournament serves, is it not basically the same thing as ISWA State, right? No knock against Hobart, I think they will do a great job hosting, but you put that many people in one place and you are asking for some chaos.

mhelmins reacted to Jcjcjc in Indiana’s Best
When someone wins a sprinting event, we don’t look to see how many people ran the 100 meter dash in high school because we know the Olympic sprinter would smoke every single person in the world.
Hildabrandt and Miracle would smoke almost every single woman in the world on the mat, and it’s a big pretty big world.

mhelmins reacted to Clint Gard in 2018 Sectional Forfeit Data
Coach Struck,
I understand your position and don't necessarily disagree but something has to give. The numbers don't lie. Do you have an idea on how to deal with the FF issue?
I'm not trying to be condescending, I'm looking for answers and ideas. Seems people get on here to argue and shoot down ideas but rarely offer up solutions. I am open to opinions and want to discuss.

I don't think there's any Brayden left there now as far as I know at least not in high school
We personally know them the two Brayden have remained friends is not my place to put personal business out there but this has nothing to do with wrestling Roncalli is better equipped to handle Brayden lowerys educational needs

I would agree. I've heard of possible realignment scenarios that sound horrendous though.
