Middle School Period Times

In my middle school conference we currently have timed periods of 1:00, 1:00, 1:00.  When we traveled to different Saturday tournaments this past season, one of the tournaments had period times of 2:00, 1:00, 1:00. Im curious as to what are your middle school conference's period times, and also what are the benefits and drawbacks for that extra minute in the first period or whatever period times your conference uses!

Thanks, appreciate any feedback.

We had been 1, 1, 1 and our conference agreed to go with 1, 1:30, 1:30 this year, which I greatly prefer.

I think it makes for a better transition to the high school 2,2,2 format and rewards the better conditioned wrestler.

I also think it's difficult to choose down in the 2nd or 3rd period with the 1,1,1 format if you think you'll have any trouble getting out because it will waste the entire period.

In the past at conference we’ve had 2-1-1.  I’ve heard that is changing this year.

In various dual meets this year, we’ve had all of the following, apparently just depending on host school’s preference.

2-1-1

1-1:30-1:30

1:30-1:30-1:30

1-1-1

I think 1/1:30/1:30 is the best option although I have no issue w consolation matches in tournaments going 1/1/1 for time.

1/1/1 is very short. Kids are working on skills and this doesn’t give them much opportunity to get better.

A 2 minute first period is a waste. There will either be a first period takedown or not. 1 minute is adequate to figure that out.
