Hate to be that guy, but the 2003 Mater Dei’s team number doesn’t exist, so there’s no point in putting them in the conversation and trying to guess if anyone would beat it because it isn’t real to begin with and no one even knows what it would be, but if you wanted to go that route, you could argue 2010 Mishawaka and 2012 Perry Meridian would each have a number to that would be “unbeatable.” The only real number is 2021 EMD with 112. That’s the one to focus on.

agreed.  only one existing number in the record books

There maybe a few old school teams who could also make a claim to a very high tournament score, but the tournament was scores differently in their time.   I’m sure if someone would retroactively applied the current tournament scoring format to their prior years tournament, we would could see how a few of those teams stacked up.

I’m in agreement that the 2003 MD team would have put up a ridiculous number.  I’m actually surprised that no one has went back and done the math for that years state tournament based on either that years scoring format and/or even the current scoring format to see wait the points would be.

I do recall the IHSWCA having an unofficially “team score” during some of the IHSAA Team  State years (no clue on 03) until the IHSAA told them to cease and desist.   But not sure if anyone ever saved a copy of those unofficial team scores.

When discontinuing Team State, Bobby Cox pointed to the fact that the IHSWCA kept score at individual state minimized Team State.  Not sure about that one, Bobby.

He also pointed to the lack of competition, as many teams would put out JV guys at team sectional, in order to save them for individual regional. Very accurate, Bobby.  It is also a head-scratching coach's move.

The death of team state was the two years mater dei was out of the tournament.  as many that came to support mater dei were there to watch the 'cats get (hopefully) beat.  The replacement team did not have the same emotional draw.

i heard the last couple of years, team state did not make money.  at the end of the day, no way/no how will the ihsaa tolerate that!

I’ve always wondered why people say one kid will get better and don’t say anything about the other.   I’m sure they will both get better.
The Purdy-Sollars match was very weird.    Sollars yelled in pain with his knee in the first and they stopped the match.  Then one of the weirder scoring disputes I have seen (in my short time as a wrestling fan). They gave Sollars 2 for a takedown when Purdy had a solid body lock on him.   Castle disputed it, the refs took the 2 away, then a very long ref/scoring table meeting, and they gave the 2 back.   Momentum completely stopped for both sides.   Not saying it would have changed things but the whole match just felt weird.  Nothing at all like the first match they wrestled this year.

They gave Sollars two for back points and two to Purdy for the reversal. They did not take away/restore points.

However, i thought the dispute time was unduly long.  It was simply verifying the score.  It really interrupted the flow of the match.

    Or, #

  5. Facts:

They did not. Egli wrestled 120 all day and looked great as did Zirkelbach at 126. I’m sure at some point they will face off to see who the world’s most dominate wrestler is

Thinking about going to Castle.  Generally, a lot of talent there.  Will it be dominate?

I need to reference "We Are... MD! A History of Mater Dei Wrestling" by @hook and half  (btw hook, isn't it about time for an updated version?) but I'd say it was hands down 2003 right??

The Wildcats travelled to Columbus, Ohio on January 18 to compete in the National College Duals.  Mater Dei rolled over, Lisbon, 56-12 in the first round, and Cincinnati Lakota East, 58-13, in the second round.  Their last opponent, St. Paris Graham, was much more formidable.  The national polls had Mater Dei at 11th, while St. Paris Graham was ranked second.  St. Paris Graham was a buzz saw and defeated the ‘Cats, 39-15.  The loss broke Mater Dei’s 116-match winning streak and handed Mater Dei its second dual loss in 253 matches.

"If our streak mattered, we wouldn't have accepted this challenge,” said Mike Goebel.  “We never talk about that. We just saw this as a chance to wrestle a quality opponent, somebody who will make us better in the long run.”

St. Paris Graham was the real deal.  Standard-bearer Blake Maurer lost only the second match of his career, a 3-1 decision to Joe Dennis.

"It was a great match," said Goebel. “He (Dennis) got a takedown with two seconds left. We didn't question it when we were there, but when we watched the tape, Blake was clearly out of bounds and Dennis' foot was on the line. The match should've gone overtime, I guess. But that doesn't necessarily change the outcome. The guy was a bear. Blake will learn from it, go on and get better."

"The guys came back to the room and decided they needed to work harder, and that's what they've done," said Goebel. "We didn't lose anything that really mattered, we just lost a match.  But even at that, if we win all four of our close matches, it's a tie. And if we get those and Craig Weinzapfel gets the pin at 145, which we thought he had, well, we could conceivably win."

Maurer faced an unfamiliar foe in his match with Dennis:  Nerves.

“To be totally honest, I was very nervous,” said Maurer.  “The match was at Ohio State.  I really wanted to go to Ohio State.  After my warm-up, I look in the stands and there is Russ Hellickson (Ohio State’s wrestling coach) setting next to my dad.  I’m like, ‘Holy crap, I need to get it done out here.’”

Mater Dei tallied wins from Matt Coughlin, Craig Weinzapfel, Sam Wildeman and Chaz Schwartz.  Schwartz won with an eight-second pin at heavyweight. The Wildcats were disappointed with their performance.

“The whole dual was about ‘What ifs?’” said Craig Weinzapfel.  “We had a bunch of one-point matches that went the wrong way.  To not do our best was a real let-down.”

In Paris St. Graham, Mater Dei found themselves sampling their own medicine.

“Everywhere we wrestled, people always talked about what good shape we were in,” said Craig Weinzapfel.  “That team (St. Paris Graham) was in incredible shape; incredibly strong.  It seemed like they had the mentality that they were going to go as hard as they could no matter what.”

“We were at the weigh-in,” said Wildeman.  “I’m looking at this guy, and he is around my size (160 pounds).  One of the guys on the team, said ‘No, that’s who Macke (125 pounds) has.  The guy was huge.  He was a man.”

“Graham won all of the close matches,” said Maurer.  “Their conditioning was better than ours.  We had our opportunities; we just didn’t get it done.”

And according to the people talking on here all week, he was the UNDERDOG!! Predicted to lose Friday night and had no chance to win a championship again. I’m waiting to hear those people comment back.

produce a single comment that declared him an underdog.

    Recap:

what an amazing article and even better SS.
106- hit 3/4 picks. That was because Krueger(CE) showed up and avenged that earlier loss to LaRocca

The Sperren pick was locked in

    113-hit 3/4 once again

But it’s not without saying that they warned us to keep an eye on Butler(Whiteland). He showed up and punched his ticket with a win over a tough Columbus East Lykins

BBB guarantee held firm as his west side boys brought another SS win.

    120-yep once again it’s 3/4

Senior Haug(ForrestP) came in overlooked and punched his ticket.
Sorry BBB, you lost the book here as Gilbert takes the title.

    126-ooops only 50% here

But this class was tough and y’all did tell us that Bechert(FR) and Tharpe(CG) shouldnt he overlooked.

    132-100%

while not in order, still impressive. Montgomery(BB) is always battle tested and is very dangerous. Good thing Donnie Baker showed up to save the Sperren lock and keep y’all at 💯

138-SOLID. All picks and in order of finish was the first of the day.

145- ok now you’re showing off as once AGAIN- PERFECTION.

152-so close as y’all hit 3/4 here. Buuuut, it’s noted to not sleep on the sectional and regional Champ Farmer. He didn’t disappoint and he punched his ticket with a win over the always tough guys from Columbus East(Holt)

    160-3/4 here

Emerine(FC) showed up to the party and takes out the always tough Owen Bryant to punch his ticket  Congrats young man

170-while not in placement order, y’all hit all 4 placers right. So close to almost hitting your 3rd Ace of the day

182-ouch 50% here. But y’all did leave it open by saying that after Sollars and Buchanan any of the other could make that trip. Kudos to Schroeder(Southridge) and Pugilese(TriW) for joking the clear favorites of this weight class.

195-here y’all hit your 3rd Ace of the day. All picks and placements spot on

    220-50% here

the other half of the Farmer brothers Kelton(EvvMem) comes to play. And  I don’t think many would’ve seen undefeated Huggins(Re) getting stuck, But kudos to Skaggs(Fr) for putting his hard work in and punching his ticket.
    The Sperren lock stood firm

285-4/4 on the picks, just a tad off on the placement to keep y’all away from that 4th Ace of the day.
Leighton Jones(BB) left VERY LITTLE doubt of that Sperren lock

overall- very impressive for such a tough Semi State

hitting on 80% of the picks and all the Sperren locks stood firm.

Say what you want about Triple B...

The man predicts a mean semi state.

Don’t sleep on…. Already mentioned James Ralph breaks the mold, Mater Dei has never had a good Heavyweight!

Sorry Trips, but I have to fact-check you on this one!  Heavyweight Bill Trainer was Mater Dei's first state champion.  The 190-pounder accomplished the feat in 1953.

Bill's sister, Sister Joanna Trainer, is a retired nun living in Ferdinand, Indiana.  Sister Joanna prays for ol' Hook and Half on a regular basis and send him messages of encouragement.  Tip of the hat to Sister J and the Trainer clan.

    They are good people!
