I had an interesting seat between both Penn fans and Bautista supporters.  Clearly each had different takes on the slam calls.  Penn fans obviously agreed with the calls on the mat, but others seemed to think Demein was basically flopping...making the slam look worse by going limp on the mat return.  Any non-partisan observers have an opinion on this match?

I saw this was a topic on the forum in 2010. A lot of people posted coaches who influenced them. I wonder who are the most influential people in the sport. ill start
Joe Caprino-coach, one of the founding members and owners of indianamat(national website of the year), also runs the preseason mag which in years past have donated to charity, puts together off-season teams and runs the ihpo
Dane Fuelling-indianamat team ranking coordinator also part of seeding committee for the ihswca classed team state.
    Who do you guys have?

I was mat side and in my opinion I didn't think any of the 3 returns was a slam. all were good solid returns that sounded loud on the dollamur mat. the sound echoed and made it seem worse specially on the third. terrible way to decide a great match

Seems like DeMien benefited from two of the more controversial calls at East Chicago this weekend.  Sometimes the ball rolls your way.

Worst case scenario is you seed the guys then everyone moves up if they get pulled from the tournament. This just shows how much wrestling coaches will screw another even if it hurts their own kids.

Faulkens said at our meeting that the reason they don't have seeding for football, basketball, etc was "look at what happens in wrestling."

I'd say in wrestling that 12-13 of the 14 brackets in every sectional (sometimes all 14) generally separate the best kids.  Of course there is an occasional bracket in which this doesn't happen, but this is not the norm.  There are 448 sectional brackets and of those there are usually only a few that don't have the best kids separated.

A random draw is just awful (I know most other sports always talk about seeding).  With a random draw with 8-10 teams you might be lucky to separate the best kids in 2-3 of the 14 weights.

No matter what criteria is put in place, you are not going to get 100% of the brackets correct.

It seems like addressing specific situations/coaches that try to take advantage of the criteria seems like a better option than abandoning seeding all together.

Never claimed he was one of the best. He has lost more matches than you can count. Just pointed out something that was left out. You must not read from the beginning.

    Sectional Seeding Criteria

    1. Has had 10 match (es) towards Record
    2. Was the wrestler a Semi-State Quarterfinalist last year?
    3. Record winning percentage
    4. Record wins
    5. Indicate Highest Advancement in IHSAA Tournament Series last year

This tournament will also be using head to head competition to seed wrestlers. Coaches will have from 01/21/2017 at 07:01 p.m. until 01/23/2017 at 03:00 p.m. to login and indicate the other wrestlers in the bracket that their wrestler has beaten.  The wrestlers will first be placed in order using the seeding criteria above, and then any wrestler that has beaten a wrestler within 5 slot(s) above him and has not lost to any wrestler below the wrestler will get moved ahead of the wrestler he/she beat.  If a wrestler has beaten a wrestler but lost to another wrestler below the wrestler he/she beat, that wrestler will not be moved.

1 Adkins Lafayette Jefferson 30-6 Beat Kidwell from West Lafayette
    2 Kidwell West Lafayette  26-3 Lost 1st round Semi-State
    3. Hart  Delphi   8-3 Lost 2nd round Semi-State
    4. Krintz West Lafayette  45-0 Lost 1st round Semi-State

Current seeding has Adkins and Krintz meeting in semi’s and Kidwell and Hart.
    By the criteria I see……
    1. Hart (by second criteria, made 2nd round semi-state)
    2. Krintz (by second criteria and then winning percentage over Kidwell)
    3. Adkins (by head to head criteria over Kidwell)
    4. Kidwell (by second criteria, no other semi-state placers)
Criteria seeding would have Hart and Kedwell wrestling and again Krintz and Adkins wrestling in semi’s. So, like I said there still meeting where they would meet if they don’t lose.

looks like 160 will be fine. I would say 3 seed should be 1st and 4 seed should be 2, but seperates the better 2 by my opinion.

Something I say to the other referees I'm working with from time to time.

"We are going to start the day with 4 referees. The instant the first whistle blows everyone in the building becomes a referee. They will be able to see pins better than us, determine who is stalling and know the exact moment control is gained or lost. The only difference is they aren't going to step in and work a few matches for you when you need to use the restroom or get something to eat."

My son was a sectional champion as a senior in 2015.  He's now a college student in central Indiana and is in his second year as an official.  Admittedly, it's difficult for him to get matches with his limited experience, but it is a great source of income for college kids, if they can work matches into their schedules!  This past weekend he was fortunate to be one of 4 officials at a conference meet in northern Indiana.  I'm biased of course, but I think he did an excellent job!  One of the coaches told me he thought my son was the second best official at the meet!  More kids like him need to be encouraged to jump into the sport as officials.  It really can be quite beneficial financially for college kids in particular.  And it can help to build the number of younger officials in the sport.
