Title IX is not as simple as having the same amount of sports. It's about creating equal opportunities. Football throws this number off because of how many kids are on the team. No female sport has the equivalent of football.
 
Athletics programs are considered educational programs and activities. 
Participation: Title IX requires that women and men be provided equitable opportunities to participate in sports. Title IX does not require institutions to offer identical sports but an equal opportunity to play;

A Decade Ago
After such a great weekend of wrestling at the 2021 state tournament, let’s take a look back at some of the similarities, differences, and other interesting facts about this year’s tournament and the one from 10 years ago.
 
The Bank
The first difference between these two tournaments has nothing at all to do with wrestling but the name of the arena. While the tournament is still held in the Indiana Pacers fieldhouse, 2011 was the last year of the fieldhouses original name Conseco Fieldhouse. Since then, the arena has been known as Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
 
Weight Difference
The 2011 state finals were also the last year of the old weight classes, after this state tournament is when the IHSAA changed the weights to the ones we still use today. With the changes being

The Bulldogs Junior’s 3rd Title
In 2011 the Crown Point Bulldogs had their eventual 4-time state champion Jason Tsirtsis win his 3rd state title. This season with just a 2-pound difference in their weight classes, Crown Point’s Jesse Mendez won his 3rd state title and will be looking to join Jason as a four-time state champ next season.
 
The Potential 3-timer
Zeke Seltzer just won his second consecutive title as a junior and will be in the hunt to become one of the next 3-time state champions next year. Similar to this, in 2011 Kyle Ayersman also won his second title as a junior and would go on to be a 3-time state champ.
 
Brothers in The Finals
In 2011 twin brothers Doug and Chad Welch both capped off their senior seasons as state champions. While not twins, the Ruhlman brothers of Bloomington South both made state finals appearances, with the younger brother and sophomore Delaney Ruhlman falling to Jesse Mendez in the finals. The older brother and senior Tristan Ruhlman capped off his high school career with a state title. The Welch brothers were only the 3rd pair of siblings to ever accomplish this feat in Indiana.
 
Attendance on hold
Due to COVID and the limited in person attendance many had to watch this year’s state tournament from home. The 2011 state tournament brought in 27,999 fans throughout the weekends 3 sessions. Hopefully, Bankers Life Fieldhouse will be filled with fans for the 2022 state championships.

After looking back at my numbers, 39 (of 64 schools) 5A and 6A schools account for 112 qualifiers. That's 50% of the field. Another 50 kids qualified from 4A schools. So, if my math is correct, 162 of the 224 qualifiers came from 4A schools or bigger....that leaves 62 qualifiers from 3A schools and smaller...

"Every year the numbers statically show that there is no advantage to an individual in terms of making semi-state or state."
 
Explain the statement above to me...this year approximately 106 of the 224 state qualifiers were from 5A and 6A football schools. That's 64 of roughly 310 schools (20%) accounting for almost 50% of the field.

I've coached at small schools--kids don't want to come out because they think they have no chance to advance. Those of you that think "just having the opportunity to compete" is enough for kids these days, are wrong. Classed team state doesn't move the needle for kids wanting to participate. Kids want to know there is a payoff at the end of their struggle. Is it guaranteed if we had 2 classes? No, but at least they feel like they have a fair chance. I can't get kids to come out when I tell them we are in a Sectional with Brownsburg, Avon, Plainfield, Pike and Ben Davis. And if you get through that, the Regional with Center Grove, Franklin, Mooresville, Martinsville, etc...
 
While programs aren't being dropped, at what point do teams stop getting dual meets scheduled? When they have 8, 9, or 10 forfeits? Nobody wants to schedule those teams. I don't have the numbers, but I would bet we are getting more of those teams every year.
 
Maybe I should have told them to come out anyway and just work harder. That seems to be a pretty popular opinion to small school problems...

By old format do you mean having an 8 team bracket? Everyone got 3 matches. Winners in the 1st round were guaranteed top 4 placement. Losers wrestled each other to determine who wrestled for 5th. Losers of that match wrestled for 7tn.

If you rewatch the match, he snaps him to the mat but doesn’t make any attempts to score off of it (i.e. get to a point where he could secure a takedown). The casebook shows an example were this could be called stalling: 6.4a:
“Typical holds/maneuvers contributing to stalling in the neutral position are: 
a) Upper body tie-ups with no attempt to take down the opponent.”
Per the rulebook, overtime is just the continuation of the match (rule 7-2) so normal rules would apply. The difference would take place in the ultimate tiebreaker. The offensive wrestler scores here by preventing the defensive wrestler from scoring. So riding a spiral ride with no attempt to breakdown or turn the opponent shouldn’t be penalized.
The casebook does reference a similar situation for the stall call that would favor the Mulkey fans: 7.6.6 Situation B:
“Should stalling be called in the following situations? A) In a neutral position, Wrestler A attempts a takedown and is stopped by Wrestler B who applies a legal front headlock. Wrestler B does not use the headlock to attempt to score a takedown but maintains the headlock....Ruling: In [this situation] Wrestler B has created a stalemate situation to avoid being scored upon. Repeating the same action to create a stalemate situation without using it in an attempt to score would be stalling on Wrestler B.”
The question here would be did Mulkey snap Melloh into the headlock, or did he apply it in an attempt to defend a shot. If the later, than no stalling should be called per the ruling above (as it should have been called a stalemate the first time it happened). But if Mulkey initiates the front headlock, then I can see how a stall call could be argued. I also acknowledge that a simple stalemate could have been called as well. 

Now we've gone from calling out the integrity of the official to questioning the honor of the coach of the winning wrestler?  You guys need to really check yourselves. 

2013–106–also had Hudkins

Division II does their national tournament the same way we do our state tournament. Best 2 (or 3 or 4) guys could be on the same side. They don’t talk or complain about it being seeded.

If we went back to 13 weight classes, we could eliminate the 2 pages of the rule book that list the criteria for tiebreaks in dual meets.

I don't think you can be anti-class wrestling and pro-wrestleback...you said it yourself--to be the best you gotta beat the best. Why get a second opportunity to qualify for state? Is it because that's how wrestling is done across the country? If so, its also classed across the country.  
 
I would argue that a lot of small schools are dedicated and putting in the work as well. I think a point that some on this board are missing is what about the small school that does everything right--open rooms, opportunities for additional training, etc, only to see their future star(s) enroll at a different high school when they enter the ninth grade? Are they suddenly "not dedicated"? 

Maybe the drop in attendance is due to the fact that there is a lot more to do in 2017 than there was in 1984. People have more entertainment options. The same can be said for wrestling participation. In the 80's and 90's, kids joined high school sports teams because that was what you did. If you weren't varsity, you participated on the jv and were still part of a team. Now, if you aren't varsity, you have a lot of options (internet, video games, etc.) to occupy your time that doesn't include being someone's back up. In an instant gratification/5 second highlight society, this shouldn't be that difficult to understand.
