Unfortunately the media is responsible for the panic.  Businesses and retirement accounts and people’s lives are being disrupted by this panic.  As someone who is in the health care industry, we as a society and our media should have this same passion for encouraging those same people who are at risk of COVID-19 to go and get their flu shots every year.  It’s those with compromised immune systems, the elderly and those with COPD that are most at risk.   The main issue with an outbreak is the transmission from healthy individuals to those who are compromised.  Instead of keeping a wrestler from going to state, how about we tell grandma and grandpa to stay at home.  If the media had its way, every Walmart in the country should be closed to keep this virus from spreading.

Wrestlers are too tough for the Corona virus!!  Plus, the Corona virus is susceptible to the headlock and gets "caught" all the time.  It prays on weaker sports like basketball!!

well to be honest the one that came to mind to me right away was when Seltzer hit an illegal move on Bettich I believe in the Semis of state  and Bettich was clearly shooken up and it looked like a possible concussion because he hit his head pretty hard. Bettich was losing pretty good and had gotten beat all year by Seltzer and he coulda layed  there and took  the win. If he had done so a whole lot of history would be changed. The first part that would be changed would be the 2020 team state champs would be Crown Point,  the second thing would be the 120 pound state champion. also it would not allow Seltzer to have the opportunity to get 3 titles and 4x under the lights. I don't know Bettich at all but after seeing that it made me a fan for life. What I have always been told  is you find out more about 1 loss about a persons character than you do after 1000 wins. Excellent Job Riley.

The first tournament I ever head coached, an opponent from Western committed two penalties that injured our wrestler forcing him to not continue; as I could see the kid didn't intend to injury our wrestler, I told the ref to blow the whistle twice so we could default to him.

When these situations arise, I always think of an Purdue-IU dual I was a part of. At 133, Chris Fleeger was beating Andre Hernandez by about 9 points and was called for an illegal key-lock/arm throw. The IU coaches took the default victory. My match was next and was boring in comparison to the two I was sandwiched between. At 149, the IU wrestler hit a headlock in the opening exchange of the match, the headlock was illegal, and Purdue took the default victory. I suppose IU may have thought that the key-lock/arm throw may have been malicious, but I don't know what they thought. The 149 default seemed to be retribution. These were not great moments for wrestling.

This dual meet was not a part of the tournament series, so the stakes aren't as high, but when in doubt, do what Bobby Douglas would do.

What's Cathedral wrestling's secret? 'Best coaching staff in the state of Indiana'

BRIAN HARMON |  SPECIAL FOR INDYSTAR
    1:38 p.m. EST Feb. 23, 2020
INDIANAPOLIS – Keeping a keen eye on a third-place match at the IHSAA Wrestling State Finals from one of two designated coaching chairs per team on the mat’s periphery, Cathedral coach Jeff Brown shouts encouragement to senior Tyler Wagner. During a break in the action, fellow Irish coach Michael Venezia pats Wagner on the shoulder and provides additional advice.

Brown is not the Cathedral head coach. Neither is Venezia.

Sean McGinley believes in delegation — and in his assistant coaches.

“I have a lot of trust with my assistants,” said McGinley, a 1988 Cathedral graduate in his 20th season as his alma mater’s wrestling coach. “These coaches work so hard with these kids and they’ve got relationships with them, and they wrestle with them everyday. And I want to put that best person out there that knows that wrestler.“

It’s a philosophy that works. With McGinley often viewing matches several dozen feet from the action, Cathedral captured its third-straight team championship and fourth since 2014 on Saturday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

The Irish scored two individual titles: Zeke Seltzer at 120 pounds and Holden Parsons at 285 pounds. Ultimately, it was depth that propelled the Irish to the banner with 102 points, edging Crown Point (93.5). Cathedral’s Logan Bailey (138 pounds) was runner-up; Elliott Rodgers (160 pounds) grabbed third place; and Wagner (170 pounds) took fourth place.

Each state finisher, along with the remaining Irish standouts who had a part in sectional, regional and semistate team crowns leading up to Saturday, has relied on a variety of assistant coaches. Whether it's Brown, Venezia, Anthony Bill, Mo Gunn, Brian Seltzer or Brandon Wright, each Cathedral grappler has tapped into a variety of knowledge.

“One thing I’m proud to say is that my coaches aren’t only my coaches, but also my friends,” Rodgers said. “One of my biggest supporters is coach Bill. He’s helped me ever since my freshman year. They all have, but he has especially worked with me. To have him sit in my corner makes me feel really good because we’ve worked on things and he knows how I wrestle.”

The staff has a wealth of experience, not the least of which includes Brian Seltzer’s long tenure as head coach at Elkhart Memorial and Lawrence North through 2016.

Admittedly biased, Zeke Seltzer (Brian’s son) believes, “Our coaching staff is the best coaching staff in the state of Indiana, by far.”

The collective coaching effort has raised the Cathedral wrestling program to the lofty athletic heights normally associated with the school, which has captured multiple football, volleyball and other IHSAA team state titles. Prior to 2014, the Irish had not won a wrestling team championship.

Under McGinley’s tenure, 108 wrestlers have qualified for the state finals, with 83 of the grapplers going on to place in the top eight, according to IndianaMat.com.

“Whether it’s me or coach Brown or coach Seltzer, I want to give the kid the opportunity to succeed,” McGinley said. “It’s not about me, it’s about these kids. If I don’t go out there (to the mat) ever, as long as they’re winning, I’m happy.”
In a year’s time, Cathedral will aim for a fourth-straight wrestling state title, a feat not accomplished since Evansville Mater Dei’s string of nine straight titles from 1995 through 2003.

Of the eight Irish state qualifiers Friday and Saturday — including Evan Dickey (106 pounds), Johnny Parker (182 pounds) and Jacob Huffman (195 pounds), who were eliminated Friday — only Seltzer, Dickey and Parker will return.

A graduating senior, Rodgers has faith that the program is in good hands.
“McGinley is your biggest fan,” Rodgers said. “He always has your back. He’s the guy that if you have a problem, he’s got your back and he will deal with it 100%. He is not only a great wrestling coach, but a great friend to have.”

I think we are at 6.  Many of the top dual teams from elementary to HS are littered with Indiana kids.  If we ever put our best on 1 team it would be scary.  Bryan Bailey was probably the closet to accomplishing that goal.  Check out his facebook, where everyone has been posting their memories with his teams.  He has coached just about every stud in the state.

We just need to get rid of travel restriction and other states will start getting exposed to some of our depth.  Our top guys already travel, but getting rid of travel restriction will help some of our other talented wrestlers get exposure that can't or don't travel during the summer.

Slivka is one of the best big match wrestlers in Indiana history. He had wins over multiple top ranked high schoolers last year. And has beaten more of those guys this year. He just gets the job done. Slivka is a hammer on top and underrated on his feet. I’m unaware of any national ranked kids that Dickens has beat. Slivka has beaten a handful. With that said, that’s the reason that Slivka gets my nod. I’m using logic and facts.

EMD fans are pumped for their guy. As they should be. Again, silly debate but a fun one. Obviously the Dickens win is fresh and 90 percent of EMD fans will give Dickens the nod. It is what it is.

With all of that said, most posters on here have never won a title and will never have family member win a title. They will never know the joy or help put the work in to win a title. So.. when you get on here and say a KID will smoke another KID, it is kinda insulting to a family that actually put in the work, took the kid to privates, took the kid to academy, took the kid all over the USA, the money that was spent, the sleep that was missed, the days of work missed, the tudors that were payed for, getting up at 5:00am to help the kid work out and meal prep, the “vacation” time that was spent in the middle of Iowa. So before you go off running your mouth behind your anonymous screen name, be considerate of what people went through and know that they are prideful. Make your logical picks or homer picks, but you need to be respectful of other people’s sacrifices. Calm down cowboys.

    Just my two cents.

Yes that was the post.  Initially I took it as though this is the protocol officials go by. Should have taken more time reading it.

Seems like there should be a consistent protocol in these situations. In the NFL, they can’t overturn a call unless it can be confirmed in video review that the first call was wrong.

I think if it were like that in HS wrestling, this situation would have been one of those “the call on the mat stands”.  Meaning, they couldn’t confirm it was wrong.

I understand the second ref can’t overturn the call, but either way it was changed based on the 2nd refs input, obviously.

With a few exceptions, the cast of characters changed. But the plot was the same for Indianapolis Cathedral: Win Indiana’s high school wrestling team championship.

“You always want to set your expectations high,” said Irish head coach Sean McGinley. “We thought going in we had a legitimate shot to be very successful. We had several goals and one of our goals was to win a state title. We were able to accomplish that.”

Cathedral traveled across town to Bankers Life Fieldhouse and took the program’s third straight title and fourth overall Saturday, Feb. 22 at the 82nd annual IHSAA State Finals.

“I’ve said it before, Friday night is always key,” said McGinley after the latest hoisting of the state trophy. “Our goal is not a state championship, it’s to get through Friday night. That’s our state championship adage. We got five out of eight which gave us a chance. We thought we were still in it. Saturday morning was the big round for us. We went five for five with several kids getting bonus points. Bonus points probably made the difference. We were getting them but
(eventual runner-up) Crown Point and (third-place team Evansville) Mater Dei was also getting them.”

Two of the eight State Finals qualifiers in the 2020 field were finalists on Cathedral’s 2019 state title-winning squad.

“This year’s team was way different from last year,” said sophomore Zeke Seltzer, who won the 2020 crown at 120 pounds after placing second as a freshman at 113. “The only people we had returning to State was me and Elliot (Rogers). Logan (Bailey) was returning, but he didn’t make it last year.”

“We had some guys step up for sure.”

What was the difference between standing on the second step of the podium and the top for Seltzer?

“I’ve been working for this for a whole year now,” said Seltzer. “It feels great to finally get it.”

Rodgers was a state champion at 152 as a junior and finished third at 160 in 220 as a senior.

Five of eight Irish wrestlers in the field earned state placement in 2020. Besides Seltzer and Rodgers, senior Holden Parsons (285 pounds) was a champion, senior Bailey (138) a runner-up and senior Tyler Wagner (170) a fourth placer.

“For me it was my faith,” said Parsons. “God got me through it and made sure I wasn’t nervous and everything. My coaches were there for me in my corner. They knew what we needed to do. hey knew how to keep me calm.”

Parsons talked about the team approach to the season.

“We keep a constant pace,” said Parsons. “As it goes along, we start picking it up. During the postseason, we taper on and off. That just keeps our gas tanks up and our lungs burning so we’re ready to go 100 percent when it comes time to put the pedal to the metal.”
“Everybody knew we had to get bonus points to keep up with Crown Point. They are a great team. They had great wrestlers. They are phenomenally-coached.”

Senior Jacob Huffman (195), junior Johnny Parker (182) and sophomore Evan Dickey (106) competed Friday night but did not advance to Saturday.

It was an extra-big weekend for the Seltzer family. Not only were there the team and individual championships, assistant Brian Seltzer (Zeke’s father) was inducted into the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame the day after the State Finals.

When the Irish reigned over the IHSAA in 2019, seniors Jordan Slivka (first at 160), Alex Mosconi (second at 145) and Lukasz Walendzak (eighth at 126) were there along with Rodgers and Seltzer. At the 2018 State Finals, Cathedral was represented by junior Slivka (first at 145), sophomore Rodgers (second at 152), senior Zach Melloh (second at 138), junior Alex Mosconi (second at 132), sophomore Bailey (third at 106), junior Walendzak (fourth at 120), senior Jacob Obst (seventh at 285)senior Jacob Obst (seventh at 285) and qualifiers senior Anthony Mosconi (160), sophomore Caleb Oliver (113) and freshman Andrew Wilson (126).

I was saying the same thing in another post. I know the referees are out there doing their best to make the right call, and sometimes we miss the call. It sucks going back and watching video of yourself making a mistake after the fact. Therefore, why not help us out at the highest levels to ensure that the CORRECT call is made.
I’m not trying to bash my fellow refs, but we can all admit, as refs, coaches, and athletes we make impulse decisions that we think to be 100% true, and turn out to be 100% wrong.

I think replay is a GREAT idea! I want the ranks of our statewide referees to grow! If there is a questionable call as we speak, and it gets called wrong, we can’t take it back. With replay we can right the wrong.

Coaching at Indy nationals today and noticed SQ Brac Hooper from Carmel was wrestling and won Indy nationals after wrestling Friday night. Just thought it was awesome to see a kid going right back to work after his season was cut shorter than I’m sure he hoped. I would bet there were some others I just recognized him from one of our kids wrestling him frequently in the offseason. Kid is tough as nails and I respect him a lot for competing just after state.
