Probably more steps to take the sport backward like they do with most sports. It's 2017 and they're stuck in 1917.

IMO I would liked the championship matches to be in a row instead of 1st/2nd 3rd/4th 1st/2nd. It would be nice to able to sit in the middle and watch all the championships at one time

That is very short-sighted.  Friends, cousins, aunts and uncles are fans of the kids that wrestle and would like to see theirs wrestle.  Those are the people who may not be heavily exposed to the sport who might pay to watch a stream.  Discounting the revenue aspect, those are the people who could become wrestling fans.  Those are the people who might have a youngin' that gets introduced to the sport or encouraged to try wrestling.  Thinking that it could have no influence on the sport is simply myopic and wrong.

That said, growing the sport and even revenue is NOT the reason this should be done.  It is simply providing a way to allow those to watch these kids that put in so much work that couldn't otherwise.  Unless it is extremely cost-prohibitive, and I have not heard any indication that is the case, then goodwill and rewarding the kids who do all the work is the reason to do it.  In my opinion, it is a slap in the face to the wrestlers themselves that the technology exists to allow those friends, grandparents, extended family, etc to watch and it is not utilized.  Not to mention you choose to have the event in Ft. Wayne (I get that) and not everybody is within an hour drive.

So I would ask whoever made this decision, that if it can be reversed, to do so quickly.  OR provide publicly ONE really good reason for not doing so!

I've always thought the IHSAA should have put a hard date to classify what grade you were athletically regardless if it coincides with academic grade. So this year the Senior class would be June 1, 1998 to May 31, 1999 in my system. If they decide to allow athletic red shirt seniors to participate then so be it, but classify them as such and give the true seniors ability to compete in 8th grade.

He knew the new Sheriff was in town and didn't handle it the way he (AD) wanted. Personally I would have liked how J handled it to be the way given his tenure and reputation. However, with the way precedent has been set in our society, he should have complied. Especially when law enforcement was brought into it. I only compare it to Paterno since he was shielding his wrestlers. I don't condone what Paterno did, but have no problem with J's intentions. I just thought it was foolish since we see how similar cases have been handled. Unfortunately you have to follow the PC & PR rules today.

Like that idea very much. I also promoted the basketball day in Indiana as well on other boards. Glad HS football finally got put on Fox Sports for the finals a few years back. Baseball, volleyball, and softball should be as well (believe they are). We need to get as much exposure for all of our athletes and extra curricula members. Never know when that exposure could lead to college scholarships, Olympic opportunities, and etc.

This stuff is why I made my earlier point. Fix the schedule and do it the right way IHSAA and quit "full nelsoning" the IHSWCA.

Just a question and probably an ignorant one, but why isn't the lacrosse and hockey method used for freestyle and greco? For high school, it's "club" teams that basically use or do use the high school. They have their own regulation body like the IHSAA and similar to the IHSWCA. I think giving them to the IHSWCA in that matter would be good. You can start with the big schools like Warren Central, Ben Davis, and etc. They can compete for a State Championship as a team/club and individually. Put one in fall and one in spring. Then use the High School season for qualifiers for the current club teams and individual tournament. Have the High School club/team and non school affiliate club at the same time. Non affiliate on weekends and high school team/club during the week.

Any reason we are having a big push for only freestyle and not greco?  A lot of the quotes used in earlier in thread state the benefits of both freestyle and greco...  So why has the ISWA picked freestyle to push rather than both of them?  If the argument is to improve our states wrestling, then shouldnt we focus on all 3 styles?

This is the kind of crap we need to get out this sport. This kid and many others in the state sacrifice for their teams and then gets the shaft at even competing. Some have wrestled up a class or more bc of various reasons for teams and then it's all taken away for another individual's success. Sorry, just a major pet peeve of mine in this sport.

Make the Ihsaa do it but then again, we can all laugh at the notion they even care.
They'll probably make us stop seeding actually. They claim in other sports that random draw is the fairest way to determine a champion.

It's why they should have an independent person putting in stats as well as the coaches. Have 3rd party reps at duals and tournaments.

Agree on the schedule being hard. I was saying to have both classed and single class individual tournaments. The classed being like the Al Smith kind of tournaments. As you said, I doubt it would be popular in discussing. However it might help grow the sport in smaller schools like ours. Maybe not but who knows.

The key factor is having someone with experience and credentials in the program. Look at AC. Barry Humble started the program and then his successful wrestlers became coaches. Their wrestlers became coaches. Same with AJ Kalvert and Bellmont. One person has to lay the foundation against odds and get parents and community to slowly buy in.

I think all wrestlers would agree that the medals and ribbons are just for show. I bet most if not all would say that being the best wrestler for the day they compete is their goal. Whether that be a class tournament or our current or both.
