Nick Lee was trying to win a team state title.  I'm sure he and his coaches cared more about the team than Nick cutting an extra weight class for one match.  And who is to say he could have made the cut?  I don't think Nick would avoid this opportunity, just as I don't think Chad wanted a blemish on his record for a meaningless dual meet that had already been decided.  If this match is to ever happen it will mostly likely be in the off season.

According to the all knowing Wikipedia, booing began as early as 6 B.C.  so good luck putting a stop to it.  Personally, I think the issue is way overblown.  In a perfect world kids wouldn't fake injury time, then miraculously "heal" and explode off the whistle for an escape. In a more perfect world, coaches wouldn't turn a blind eye to obvious efforts at gaining an unfair competitive advantage.  I don't know the ratio, but I am going to guess most acts that get booed are far more deserved than not. For every kid that gets booed for legit blood time, there's far more faking injuries, etc. because they are gassed.

jchas, I get your point but part of me also thinks this is leading to the further sissification of America.... I'm middle aged now so maybe I'm getting cynical and tired of the "poor me" attitude.  You know the kind: "it's not my fault, somebody else made me do it."  Should we stop cheering for the winner because it might hurt the losers feelings?  Of course not, but it's really all the same message.

Did I boo on Saturday?  Guilty as charged.  I booed the kid who faked an injury to attempt an unfair competitive advantage.  I booed the ref who allowed the kid to back up with 2 seconds left in the match after he'd already been warned for stalling and backed up with 7 seconds left.  And I booed the obese ref who was too lazy to get down into position to count near fall. And for full disclosure, I booed Jack Robinson West for fielding a team of ringers and no one can convince me those kids didn't know their actions were wrong. They cheated.  Period.

I know that's not a popular thing to say, but it's how I feel. In my opinion, there's just a little too much political correctness right now in this world.  I'm going to focus on my own shortcomings, and keep on supporting Indiana wrestling for as long as I can (and hope it stays classless!!).

Many times it is the action that is being booed, not the wreslter.. I do think there is a difference...

Booing blood or injury time shows frustration with stoppage of the match...

I also witnessed Riley Akers put his hand to his ear and egg the crowd on when people were booing at the Merrillville Semi-State.

Gaige Torres reacted similarly in the finals at Merrillville while people were booing at the end against Truver.

One or two examples either way does not define all of the athletes.

I personally have no problem with the fans booing.  I do think that high school needs to go to the NCAA rule of first injury time is choice for the other guy.  This would reward the opposing wrestler for a lot of the situations listed above.

Anytime you get 10,000 fans in one place, there will always be the "mob mentality".  As long as a few people start booing, the rest will follow just off of pure instinct.

The argument that these are 14-18 year old kids, and we shouldn't boo kids doesn't really hold up.  These are not just any regular kids.  These are elite athletes who we pay money to go watch.  Just because they are not compensated for their talents, does not make this any different of a situation than the NCAA or professional ranks, and we have no problem booing them.

I remember the blood time. I think it was Lytle's semifinal opponent, Chad Blacketer (from Pendleton), had blood all over his singlet from Lytle's wound.

How tough are wrestlers?! If most high school kids sustained these types of injuries (Lytle, Harvey, Elijah Dunn, Conner James) they would be out for a month...wrestlers just wrap it up and immediately get back after it.

I usually make scrambled eggs out of them and give them out as treats, so no I am not upset at all.  I don't get upset when people boo at me because I'm not a hypocrite.

That's funny.  You have about 100 teams going to the ironman and from about 20 different states, and they have no problem seeding it.    You use criteria like retuning champ or placer.  Even things like state placer or national placement are seeding criteria.  Like Troll said you also have winning percentage.

I suppose this thread is why I do not read or post too often. Emotions can test character when a wrestler is your child, someone you are close to, or someone you coach. I am in no position for defense. Thank you to those kind words previously posted. I can post a long list of obstacles that Jer has overcome or has dealt with , that has compiled, and resulted. I guess those would be excuses and we (especially Jer) will have none of that. Setbacks and adversity are what defines our lives. Its a tough pill to swallow, but the emotions run way deeper upon failure than victory. Finally, in 2 years, he is 100% with an open road ahead, and I foremost pray that it stays that way. The one thing not mentioned is that Tyler Fergusson won a very important match and is a very good wrestler. And also has overcome , as I have been told, hisown obstacles and setbacks. In a field of 10 returning state placers, there was going to be some heartbreaks. Another arguement for wrestlebacks maybe, idk. Working hard? Oh geeze. Im out.

Tyler Ferguson was out all year with a compression fracture in his L2 and L3 lumbar.  Didnt know if he was going to be able to come back or not.  That kid went through alot of rehab to come back. To do as well as he did speaks volumes of his charachter.  Injuries to anyone in the post season like Konrath and Stevenson are unfortunate and especially to someone's senior year.  I am very proud to call him my son and glad he got to leave high school on a winning note.

He could stall for 5 minutes and not get called and go on to win a state title by a point or in OT and feel like he actually deserve it.  I would boo that kid.  I am also booing this thread. Booo thread, Booooo.

Playing devil's advocate, because I have no dog in this fight, where's the proof that a multi-class system benefits wrestling?  Have other states done studies on this?  Is there actual data to confirm or deny this? Or is it purely conjecture?

You are correct Y2 fans will be gained and fans will be lost.  You are just hearing the voices of the fans that will be lost.  No one is saying that Cummings can beat Streck, I just think we like to see a clear cut champ.

The classed system will undoubtedly pull in more wrestler participation, which in turn brings in more fans.  So I can't really argue that point.  The fact that people enjoy the current system shouldn't be an absurd idea.
