Gomez hit him with a double leg Death Valley Driver from pro wrestling.  Miller might not come back this year from that.  Pathetic to see Bono crying about the call.  Won't say Gomez intended to drill him, but it was a drill nonetheless.

Nice win for G. Rooks over Gomez! I believe this was his first match back from injury and he didn't seem like the normal Gomez to me. Then he gets a slam call vs Miller (MD) and subsequent DQ in the consos and is out. Miller MF next match. Maybe Gomez will get an at large bid, otherwise he's done.

    2011 112 lbs.

    1. Mason Todd of Pendleton Heights (157-9) - (Q, 5th, 1st, 3rd) - Gave Cody Phillips his first loss in 3 years of high school wrestling at semi-state a week prior, defeated Brenden Campbell twice the following season, and was a 2009 Fargo AA. Also defeat d future (160 lb.) champion Brian Harvey twice as a sophomore.

    2. Jarred Brooks of Warsaw (139-6) - (DNQ, 5th, 2nd, 1st) - Responsible for another of Phillips’ only three career losses in the semi-finals, was a Fargo runner-up that summer and won Super 32 as a senior over future NCAA champion NaTo. Spent most of, if not his whole senior season as the #1 113 in the nation. And it’s maybe marginal to mention, but Jarred’s 5th place as a sophomore was likely a case of “he would have been 3rd if he didn’t have the runner-up at semi-state and then drew into the champion’s quarter-bracket.”

    3. Cody Phillips of Union County (169-4) - (1st, 1st, 3rd, SQ) - Took 124 IHSAA sanctioned matches for him to finally lose. Had positive career records vs. Brooks and Petrov who finished their senior seasons as champions, while unfortunately Phillips injury defaulted out of the tournament after a semi-finals loss to future 2x champion Cody LeCount at semi-state. Technically only lost 3 matches that he actually started his whole career. Was definitely ranked #1 in the nation at 103 lbs. (maybe even 113) for some time.

    4. Paul Petrov of Hanover Central (180-13) - (DNQ, 2nd, 4th, 1st) - Went 142-4 following his freshman season, losing only to the guys ahead of him on this list. Finished his senior year strong with a fall over returning champion Mason Todd in the semi-finals and an all-time-classic with my personal “best to never win it” Brenden Campbell.

Since the four were in the same graduating class, they met up multiple times over the years. From their sophomore years on up, they had a combined: 481-15 record, with 10 of the losses coming amongst each other, and the other 5 coming from champion Brian Harvey, runner-up Paul Beck, “best to not win” Brenden Campbell, and 2x champion Cody LeCount.

Personally I didn’t like when they changed the rule to the merkle being a takedown. It changed the way finishing a head on the inside single that goes to the mat. It use to be a good limp arm out and you were good to go now if they catch that arm you are caught in the merkle position. So now it has turned into chasing the ankle. Which many times can turn into a stalemate. You are seeing more half slidebys and elbow slides going to merkles to get the 2. I just don’t see it as control. I think it is more of a 50/50 situation but once the ref calls 2 it changes how the wrestlers react. But… that is just me.

I just wanted to take a minute and commend these young wrestlers, their coaching staffs, and their families for the sportsmanship displayed by the vast majority of these young wrestlers this weekend.  These young people have poured countless hours of blood, sweat, and tears into this sport and whether they got the result they wanted or not, they carried themselves with pride and dignity.  In a world of trash talking, showboating, and showing up your opponent, it's refreshing to see some humility, humbleness, and mutual respect.

Side Note:  The GPA's of the wrestlers in the finals were impressive.  They are not just disciplined on the mat, but also carrying that discipline into the classroom.  Keep up the good work!

So many great names in this topic. My brother and I had a conversation this weekend about how tough it is to make the semi-final match of the State tournament. I get that some paths leading there are more difficult than others, but to get to that match, you are beating someone pretty good, or at least someone that just beat someone pretty good. My hats off to all the current and previous state semi-finalist. To me this makes it even more impressive how some guys just make this look so easy.

106 I think Dickman bburg and Rouix could still be in the mix at 106 I know they were smaller coming in to high school.
    possible impact freshman Jensen Boyd

113- Ayden Bollinger moving up a weigh a returning 3rd placer could be a strong favorite. If Dickman moves up a weight I would think he is the favorite

120- returning Champ Larocca I would guess is the favorite, Gavin Jendreas has a win over Larocca at Al
smith and Preston Haines has been under the lights it will be interesting to see if Hockaday stays 120 and hunts another champ

126- Jake Hockaday 2x champ moving up a weight took out a 2x champ I would guess he will be towards the top of the pound for pound

dark horse Incoming Freshman Clinton Shepherd has been wrestling well and wrestled Jake tough at IHPO

132- could be an exciting weight. Exciting Freshman Tylin Thrine undefeated would be the favorite but 2 incoming freshman have Wins over Thrine
Evan Stanley Lowell is tough and Angelo Vargo is equally as explosive as Thrine
Thrine and Freshman stud Haines had a wild match in the quarters 9-8 could be good
138- Brady Ison is the runner up and lost some tight matches to Buttler and has a win over Leavell who is a 2x 3rd and a champ I would guess those 2 would be the favorite
dark horse Landon Hawkins gotta get on the mat but the talent is there and has won a lot of big matches
144- Reece Courtney and Jeffery Huyvaert was a great match in the semis and could be under the lights
dark Horse Parker Reynolds Parker is tough split with Courtney has some injuries at the end but I wouldn’t count Parker out

150- Wyatt Kresja had 1 loss and ran to the lights. Dude is tough Graham will be in the mix I would guess some of the 38’s will grow my guess would be Major

157- 3 semi finalist return at 152 May, Betz and Brabender. May has had an incredible year and wrestled Lowery tough I would say he is the favorite Betz and barbender have improved every year.

165- Brenton Russall is the only returning medalist at 160 he will be in the mix. I wouldn’t sleep on Beck the freshman from Rochester gave Goin the toughest match of the weekend

now the weights get really weird

174- Hobart Aiden Costellos last 2 losses were Ruhlman and goodwin the finalist. He has a :34 second pin against cashman who was in the semis and split with Harden the freshman from cathedral but I could see Harden growing out of the weight possibly a healthy Noah Clouser

2 Dark horses I think this will be the weight Nationally Ranked Anthony Rinehart will fall I think he will have a good summer and incoming freshman Rojas Brownsburg will be really tough there I think he will be in the mix

190- It will be Veazys weight to lose Penolas jump from sophomore year to junior year was amazing does he make another big jump and win a title. Weems and Freeman really looked great as sophomore and freshman.
Dark horse Brewer had a hicup Friday night but had multiple wins over weems and might get a great partner to work with every day
    215
Will Clark is the retuning champ and ran the gauntlet. The shocker of the weekend Cole Chicoine the pride of the logansport regional is returning and I would Guess 195 runner up Mcconell will be in the mix also Gunnar Henry who has a nice rivalry with Will Clark
Kendrix puts in a ton of work over the summer and will look to contend

285 Paul Clark had a barn burner in the semis with Jones and only lost to jones in indiana. He will try to match his brother

McNutt is fast and strong he will continue to grow in to the weight and look to get under the lights with Clark.

He lost it the conference Finals when he was very sick but no excuse he was beaten by Huntington Norths Nick/logan Randle at the NCC championships keeping BC from being a four-time conference champion! BC had beaten him pretty handily earlier in the season for losing to him at conference. What's even crazier is that was Randall's only loss going into State at 41-1 and he would lose a heartbreaker 4-3 to Mason Todd in the first round... That 112 bracket is one of the most loaded brackets I've ever seen in the state finals history... What's even more wild is semi state that year Campbell won, the top four were Campbell, Todd, McKinley and Harvey. That is three state champs and a two-time runner-up all in the same semi state LOL.. Campbell lost to the state champ back 2-0, but that bracket had so many legendary guys that I'm going to have to post it.

Agree, Maybe I watch too much college wrestling, but the out of bounds calls seemed very inconsistent. Anyone know if there was some discussion on this regarding the mat layout or something? I liked the new layout, just thought some of the calls were incorrect with my understanding of the rule.

As stated, a tough job and overall thought the refs did a nice job!

No Brenden Campbell mention yet? 2x runner-up, third place finish, and an injury default out of the tourney as a freshman while ranked first. Only losses in his career at 201-6 were to runner-up Paul Beck, 3x champion Kyle Ayersman, champion Mason Todd(2x), champion Paul Petrov, and sadly one more as a sophomore I can’t track down.

I do not know this kid at all but I just think with all the talk about the 3 schools and other things it’s getting lost that this young man went 52-0!!! That, for one, is extremely tough to do and cap off with a title. Also so so rare to see a kid with that many matches now. Most kids come in with 30-40 matches most? Looking at his track profile it adds up to him having 184 matches total over 4 years. Just think that’s an awesome career for Aiden Torres really, maybe not to others but congrats!

    2 things...
    1. IU couldn't commit to Assembly Hall as it does not control the Big Ten schedule and the BT doesn't release next year's schedule anytime soon.
    2.  Ignore the seating capacity.  If you haven't been there, do you realize how steep and high up the balcony?  There is no way I'd want to sit up that high.  Wrestlers would look like ants.

Inconsistencies in the way stalling was called on top and assistant officials seemingly being spectators instead of following their roles were the biggest issues I saw, but overall it wasn't the worst I've ever seen. One that stood out in a good way for me was #6 (Joshua Howard). Good command presence, consistent on calls, in good positions, good anticipation of the action.

It's a thankless job and we desperately need officials. Hopefully we get some talented wrestlers coming up who understand the nuances of scrambling and awkward positions to start reffing.
