He himself was a State qualifier at 98 pounds.. And was hardly 90 pounds his senior year and to this day might weigh 100 pounds soak and wet, but has a vice grip like most would not believe. It is always awesome when he, dad and I sip a few cold 1 and UNC lets me pick his brain and talks about those Delta teams! There was 7 guys that were SQ/Placers in the class of 87 which is unreal in it's own right. was on the teams that had 6 state champs during his 4 years there with Riggin, Locke, Tuttle, ginther, McCormick, Campbell. He was part of the bk2bk Team State champ teams 84 & 85 that both went 8-0. Then his Jr year they got runner up going 14-2, and lost the semi state and finished 14-2. He really cherished those times and loved that I was wanting to know all I could about those squads and told my dad that I had more sense than he did off of wrestling history alone lol.. In uncle Peewee's 4 years they had 25 State qualifiers, 19 placers, 16 of those 19 were state Semi finalists aka top 4 placers ,8 finals appearances under the lights in the finals going for 7 individual state with Ginter being a 2xer and the Eagles holding a superb 7-1 record in the state title match during those 4 seasons.. They also had Santana Adame, Jose Escobedo, and David Martin III) As a team, Mater was ranked 11th in the nations and Saint Paris Graham was 2nd. Mater Dei lost 39-15. Mater Dei lost several close matches in the loss. Saint Paris Graham's lineup just so you can see just how tough they were. 11 placed in the top six. State champs were Cameron Doggett 119, Dustin Schlatter 125, and CP Schlatter 152. 189- Joe Hoke runner up, David Erwin 145 got 3rd and Joe Dennis 171 got 5th. I chose 2013 because of the three individual champions, but 2012 had seven Fargo All-Americans and eight state medals with six top four. Honestly not that close at all despite how good our team was. They didn’t give up many falls, but they would still give up quality decision. I gave McClurg the win at 152/160 because he proved he could beat anyone, and at 145/152 Cooper was dangerous because he pinned Vinny Corsaro in nine seconds, but it wasn’t a consistent thing to count on and he still gave up bonus to better guys. I also gave LeCount the decision over Coughlin, but Cody was a bonus point machine and pinned both Tommy Forte and Ben Harvey and had the fastest tech fall in the finals, so that was a generous one. Keeping all other results the same, in order to win this dual PM would need to win 106, 120, and 138. Morningstar was a 3x Iowa State champ that went on to help Iowa win 3 national titles and was a 2x all American germs 3rd then having a torn knee still placing 7th his senior year, winning 110 matches in his tenure with the Hawkeye along side Alex T. Guys that couldn't fit in lineup because they were behind state champs and the next year after they graduated they either won state themselves or were state placers. Example: John Ginther (wrestled varsity all year then lost to State Champ Heintzelman in wrestle off right before sectionals) Ginther went on to go 4th-1st-1st. They tried to dual St, Paris Graham who was ranked #1 in country at time, but they didn't want to... finally convinced them to a few years later and beat them. They also had three champs in 1934, and a champ and two runners-up in 1933. Guys that couldn't fit in lineup because they were behind state champs and the next year after they graduated they either won state themselves or were state placers. Example: John Ginther (wrestled varsity all year then lost to State Champ Heintzelman in wrestle off right before sectionals) Ginther went on to go 4th-1st-1st. They tried to dual St, Paris Graham who was ranked #1 in country at time, but they didn't want to... finally convinced them to a few years later and beat them. Years following this team they were ranked in the Top 5 in the country (and this team had 7 seniors in the lineup. This was the first year going back to the individual tournament to determine the team state champion. They would have scored 14 more points for their 7 Friday night wins, plus whatever bonus they earned in those 7 matches. So, that team technically was the record holder for most points scored until the 2022 CP team blew it out of the water. Most Points Scored 178 Crown Point, 2022 112 Evansville Mater Dei, 2021 109.5 Warren Central, 2016 108 Indianapolis Cathedral, 2018 105 Brownsburg, 2022 102.5 Perry Meridian, 2013 102 Indianapolis Cathedral, 2020 A lot of great wrestling teams and awesome wrestlers have taken the mat over the years in Indiana. It’s a very hard tournament to win, especially under the IHSAA format. Comparing teams and eras is impossible, but that’s what makes it fun to think about. The duals tournament was awesome, but it had its challenges - making weight during the middle of the week, wrestling a lot during the postseason, it was not seeded so some areas had tougher paths than others. The individual tournament is awesome too, but it has its challenges - no wrestlebacks, luck of the draw, and some programs have tougher paths than others to get their guys downtown and on the podium. We have made much improvement with the classed duals tournament, the new travel rules, and our individual tournament is still the greatest spectacle in high school sport. When I was coaching at Roncalli during Covid I spent a lot of time on finding accurate statistics and researching information on the history of the program… What isn’t talked about enough is how hard our state tournament used to be and how difficult it was to win back in the 60s, 70s, 80s… we took less athletes from each round of the state tournament and medaled less wrestlers.
