Delta teams in the 80s

1981: Team had 4 state champs and one 4th place (only placed top 4)

1984: Team had 3 state champs and one 3rd place (only placed top 4)

My dad's best friend and who I call uncle Pee Wee  aka Roger Hirst was part those loaded 80s  teams 84-87,as he graduated in 87.. He himself was a State qualifier at 98 pounds.. And was hardly 90 pounds his senior year and to this day might weigh 100 pounds soak and wet, but has a vice grip like most would not believe.

It is always awesome when he, dad and I sip a few cold 1 and UNC lets me pick his brain and talks about those Delta teams! There was 7 guys that were SQ/Placers in the class of 87 which is unreal in it's own right.

was on the teams that had 6 state champs during his 4 years there with Riggin, Locke, Tuttle, ginther, McCormick, Campbell.

He was part of the bk2bk Team State champ teams 84 & 85 that both went 8-0. Then his Jr year they got runner up going 14-2, and lost the semi state and finished 14-2.

He really cherished those times and loved that I was wanting to know all I could about those squads and told my dad that I had more sense than he did off of wrestling history alone lol.. In uncle Peewee's 4 years they had 25 State qualifiers, 19 placers, 16 of those 19 were state  Semi finalists aka top 4 placers ,8 finals appearances under the lights in the finals going for 7  individual state  with Ginter being a 2xer and the Eagles holding a superb 7-1 record in the state title match during those 4 seasons.. Those 80s teams def need some consideration.

  • #1 Crown Point ‘22 vs. #8 Warren Central ‘16
  • #2 EMD ‘03 vs. #7 Cathedral ‘20
  • #3 Perry Meridian ‘13 vs. #6 Brownsburg ‘17
  • #4 Lawrence North ‘05 vs. #5 EMD ‘02

#1 Crown Point 22 over #8 Warren Central 16 (CP just too deep. CP wins 7/9 matches.

#5 Mater Dei  02 over #4 Lawrence North  05 (Mater Dei won team state 66-3, 44-15, 49-12.

They had three seconds and a a first. Lawrence North won team state 36-21, beat Mater Dei  36-23 and MD was weaker compared to previous years, and they beat Avon for the title 48-17. LN only had one in the finals. Mater Dei wins 8/9 matches

#3 Perry Meridian 13  over #6 Brownsburg 17. PM scored 102 points and BB had 100. PM wins 33-33 on criteria. 7-7

#2 Mater Dei 03 over #7 Cathedral. 03 Mater Dei wins 10 or 11 matches here.

---------------------------------------------

#1 Crown Point 22 over # 5 Mater Dei 02.  Crown Point wins 7/8 matches.

#2 Mater Dei 03 over #3 Perry Meridian 13. Mater Dei wins 8/9 matches

----------------------------------------------

#1 Crown Point 2022 vs # 2 Mater Dei 2003 for the hypothetical team state championship. MY gut tells me CP wins 8 matches to 6. But never count out the Mater Dei magic.

It was honestly a tough choice between 2012 and 2013 Perry teams. I chose 2013 because of the three individual champions, but 2012 had seven Fargo All-Americans and eight state medals with six top four. I’m wondering how much different it is with that team vs. ‘03 EMD.

103/106 – Brittner dec. Johnson, 3-0 EMD

112/113 – Cottey dec. Williams, 3-3 Tie

119/120 – Hillenbrand dec. Kenny, 6-3 EMD

125/126 – James dec. Macke, 6-6 Tie

171/182 – Maurer dec. Masengale, 24-12 EMD

189/195 – Coughlin dec. Koehring, 27-12 EMD

215/220 – Unfried pin. An 33-12 EMD

275/285 – Winfield major dec. Schwartz, 33-16 EMD

Wow. Honestly not that close at all despite how good our team was. They didn’t give up many falls, but they would still give up quality decision. I gave McClurg the win at 152/160 because he proved he could beat anyone, and at 145/152 Cooper was dangerous because he pinned Vinny Corsaro in nine seconds, but it wasn’t a consistent thing to count on and he still gave up bonus to better guys. I also gave LeCount the decision over Coughlin, but Cody was a bonus point machine and pinned both Tommy Forte and Ben Harvey and had the fastest tech fall in the finals, so that was a generous one. Keeping all other results the same, in order to win this dual PM would need to win 106, 120, and 138.

103/106 – Cottey dec. Brittner, 3-0 PM

112/113 – James major dec. Williams, 7-0 PM

119/120 – Hillenbrand dec. Kenny, 7-3 PM

130/132 – McKinley dec. Coughlin, 13-3 PM

135/138 – Scott dec. Bova, 13-6 PM

140/145 – McClurg dec. Lehman, 16-6 PM

145/152 – Weinzapfel pin. Matthews, 16-12 PM

152/160 – Nosko dec. Johnson, 16-15 PM

160/170 – Wilderman dec. Masengale, 18-16 EMD

171/182 – Maurer dec. Martin, 21-16 EMD

215/220 – Unfried dec. Naughton, 24-19 EMD

275/285 – Winfield major dec. Schwartz, 24-23 EMD

MUCH closer with 2012, but it’s hard to beat four state champs, but I would bet on LeCount to get bonus in most scenarios.

Great duals... coughlin vs Lecount would be unreal, macke vs James would be match up 2 the best to never win a title also..

Coughlin held a freestyle win over Alex tshirts in HS also and was a 4x FINALIST 2nd,2nd,1st,1st

Vs 3x FINALIST 2nd,1st,1st🔥🔥

7 finals appearances and 4 titles between them.. I'd have to say it's a toss up with them both beating each other on any given day

Coughlin  #1@160 178-4 vs #1@152 168-4 morningstar 2005 Senior nationals@152 finals is in YouTube I believe and a great match, they spoke on the different rankings that had them ranked at different weights.

Morningstar was a 3x Iowa State champ that went on to help Iowa win 3 national titles and was a 2x all American germs 3rd then having a torn knee still placing 7th his senior year, winning 110 matches in his tenure with the Hawkeye along side Alex T.

Coughlin beat him 3-1 in double OT to win the national title and also was a  AA for IU later on.

Delta 1981 Lineup and Stats

Team Record: 8-0

  • IHSAA State Champions
  • IHSAA Semi State Champions
  • IHSAA Regional Champions
  • IHSAA Sectional Champions

(Set largest margin victory at state tournament that held for almost 40 years)

*With only 13 wrestlers in a lineup and only placing Top 4*

Lineup (only had 13 Weight classes)

  • 98: David Irving (10th) - Semi State Qualifier - (21-6 record)
    • (got 4th his junior year and got 2nd his senior year and went on to wrestle at IU)
  • 105: Brad Kennedy (11th)- Semi State Qualifier
    • (got 3rd his senior year and went on to wrestle at Uindy)
  • 112: Chris Ruble (12th) - IHSAA 4th Place - (25-7 record)
  • 119: Doug Campbell (12th) - IHSAA State Qualifier (24-4 record)
    • (was also a state qualifier as a sophomore)
  • 126: Chris Campbell (12th) - IHSAA State Champ - (30-0 record)
    • (3rd as soph. and 2nd as junior)
  • 132: Don Heintzelman (12th) - IHSAA State Champ - (16-2 record)
    • (went on to wrestle at Notre Dame)
  • 138: David Locke (9th) - Semi State Qualifier - (21-7 record)
    • (rest of career speaks for itself)
  • 145: Jeff Cox (11th) - Regional Qualifier (9-3 record)
  • 155: Greg Gadbury (12th) - IHSAA State Champ - (32-0 record)
    • (3rd place as a junior)
  • 167: David Palmer (11th) - IHSAA State Champ - (29-0)
    • (2nd as freshman, 1st as Sophomore, and 1st as senior) Went on to wrestle at Oklahoma and was one of the best if not the best wrestlers to ever come through Indiana I could go on and on with accolades
  • 189: Steve Stewart (12th)
  • HWT: John Good (12th)
    • (was a state qualifier as a junior)

By the words of David Locke... this was the best team that Delta had in their dominating run in the 80s and there were some really good teams that followed. Guys that couldn't fit in lineup because they were behind state champs and the next year after they graduated they either won state themselves or were state placers. Example: John Ginther (wrestled varsity all year then lost to State Champ Heintzelman in wrestle off right before sectionals) Ginther went on to go 4th-1st-1st.

They tried to dual St, Paris Graham who was ranked #1 in country at time, but they didn't want to... finally convinced them to a few years later and beat them.

Years following this team they were ranked in the Top 5 in the country (and this team had 7 seniors in the lineup.

Hammond High had 4 champs each year from 1935 to 1938 and had six finalists for 1936 and 1937.  They also had three champs in 1934, and a champ and two runners-up in 1933.

Pro wrestling forefather Dory Funk Sr. won back to back titles during this time.

I was wondering when someone would work Palmer into the conversation. He probably could fit in to that 160 Super Bracket thread as well.

Cody, I think there is a great coaching tree from the 1981 team.

Between Delta and SouthSide Delaware county has a Pretty sick All decade team.

fun fact: The 2013 PM team… the Ihsaa did not score the first round at the state tournament that year.  This was the first year going back to the individual tournament to determine the team state champion.   They would have scored 14 more points for their 7 Friday night wins, plus whatever bonus they earned in those 7 matches.  So, that team technically was the record holder for most points scored until the 2022 CP team blew it out of the water.

Most Points Scored
178 Crown Point, 2022
112 Evansville Mater Dei, 2021

109.5 Warren Central, 2016
108 Indianapolis Cathedral, 2018

105 Brownsburg, 2022
102.5 Perry Meridian, 2013
102 Indianapolis Cathedral, 2020

A lot of great wrestling teams and awesome wrestlers have taken the mat over the years in Indiana.  It’s a very hard tournament to win, especially under the IHSAA format.  Comparing teams and eras is impossible, but that’s what makes it fun to think about. The duals tournament was awesome, but it had its challenges - making weight during the middle of the week, wrestling a lot during the postseason, it was not seeded so some areas had tougher paths than others.   The individual tournament is awesome too, but it has its challenges - no wrestlebacks, luck of the draw, and some programs have tougher paths than others to get their guys downtown and on the podium.

We have made much improvement with the classed duals tournament, the new travel rules, and our individual tournament is still the greatest spectacle in high school sport.

When I was coaching at Roncalli during Covid I spent a lot of time on finding accurate statistics and researching information on the history of the program… What isn’t talked about enough is how hard our state tournament used to be and how difficult it was to win back in the 60s, 70s, 80s… we took less athletes from each round of the state tournament and medaled less wrestlers. Some years there was even like a repechage format at state.  Crazy stuff.

I believe that team scored 124.5 team points unofficially. Insane.
