Minch (North Montgomery) #3 Scott Vlink (Crown Point) vs. #6 Royce Deckard (Bloomington South) #2 Bob Hassman (Franklin Community) vs. #7 Bob Harmon (Castle) Final Four Pee-Wee Champ vs. Intermediate Champ Junior Champ vs. Veteran Champ Winners will wrestle for the State Championship Round #1 Pee-Wee Bracket #1 Leroy Vega (Cal College) vs. #8 Billy Haggar (Randolph Southern) In the opening match of the tournament, little known Billy Haggar of Randolph Southern comes out on a holy tear, taking Vega down twice in the first period. Vega turns it on in the second period, taking Haggar from his feet to his back and adding another score in the third with a tilt. Winner #1 Leroy Vega (Cal College) #4 Mike Weimer (Lawrence North) vs. #5 Joe Willmann (Lowell) This match on paper is a tough one to call. I see it going into overtime everytime I play it out. Weimer is so tough on his feet while Willmann is a beast on the mat. Advantage Willmann in O.T. with Weimer being a proud new dad, sleep deprivation kicks in and Willmann counters Weimer?s Super Duck attempt for the takedown in Overtime. Winner #5 Joe Willmann (Lowell) #3 Brad Harper (Penn) vs. #6 Jake Harreld (Fishers) Harper opens up his offense right off the bat and builds a 6-0 lead heading into the third period. Harreld chooses neutral and throws Harper to his back, but the official does not call the pin. Harper wins in a controversial final period. Winner #3 Brad Harper (Penn) #2 Greg Shaefer (Mater Dei) vs. #7 Brady Eppert (Anderson Highland) Eppert comes out of the gates brawling. A battle filled first and second period leaves Shaefer with a gash that requires 17 staples to hold together. 0-0 going into the third, Shaefer gets a much needed escape at the buzzer and finishes the match with a 1-0 win. Winner #2 Greg Shaefer (Mater Dei) Intermediate Bracket Wrestle-In Joe Caprino (Garrett) vs. AJ Bradley (Muncie Wilson) The much anticipated match up sees Caprino eeking out Bradley 17-16 in a takedown extravaganza. Caprino at the end of the match credits his superior finger strength to be the difference in the match. Winner Joe Caprino (Garret) #1 Tony Abbott (Muncie South) vs. #8 Joe Caprino (Garrett) A winded Caprino walks right into the monster left handed side headlock of Abbott. Abbott Eeks out Pat Day?s state record of :11 seconds at the state finals and makes it :10. Winner #1 Tony Abbott (Muncie South) #4 Aaron Moss (Ben Davis) vs. #5 Cale Hoover (Center Grove) In a similar situation to Weimer vs. Willmann, we see an overtime match, but with brand new twin babies, Cale Hoover just doesn?t have the gas in the third period. Moss hits a blast double for the O.T. victory. Winner #4 Aaron Moss (Ben Davis) #3 Derrick Snyder (Mishawaka) vs. #6 Brian Seltzer (Elkhart Memorial) Snyder fresh off of reconstructive ACL surgery gets ridden out by the tough legging of Seltzer in the third period. Seltzer picks up the tough 3-2 victory. Winner #6 Brian Seltzer (Elkhart Memorial) #2 Jared Williams (Lawrence North) vs. #7 Danny Struck (Jeffersonville) In Stucks first appearance on the mat in 4 years, Williams hits a takedown right off the bat. Two more added in each of the second and third periods seals the win for Williams. Winner #2 Jared Williams (Lawrence North) Junior Bracket #1 David Maldonado (Merrillville) vs. #8 Nick Petrov (Hanover Central) Though Petrov tries to sweet talk the officials at the beginning of the match, Maldonado controls this one with a major decision on a last second takedown in the third. Winner #1 David Maldonado (Merrillville) #4 Ed Pendoski (CIA) vs. #5 Jim Tonte (Perry Merridian) In the battle of receding hairlines, Tonte comes out strong with a first period takedown and ride out. Pendoski comes back with an escape takedown in the second and Tonte?s knee goes out on him. A strong ride out in the third gives P the match. Winner #4 Ed Pendoski (CIA) #3 BJ Faurote (Bellmont) vs. #6 Mike Atwood (Delphi) While Atwood has the definite size advantage, BJ Pushes the pace the entire first period and Atwood gases. Faurote his a body lock to a suplex landing Atwood flat on his back in the second. Winner #3 BJ Faurote (Bellmont) #2 Trent McCormick (Yorktown) vs. Dan Briggs (Union County) McCormick warms up with 200 push ups before the match and starts to fade going into the third period. He holds on to a slim 4-3 win. Winner #2 Trent McCormick (Yorktown) Veteran Division #1 Mike Goeble (Mater Dei) vs. #8 Barry Humble (New Haven) Goeble wrestles a solid 5:45 seconds of the match and builds a 4-0 lead. The ever crafty Humble hits a Peterson roll in the last fifteen seconds to win the biggest upset of the tournament 5-4. Winner #8 Barry Humble (New Haven) #4 Rex Peckingpaugh (New Castle) vs. #5 JD ?JoeDad? Minch (North Montgomery) In the matchup of best buddies, Peckingpaugh is handicapped by no longer being allowed to figure four the body while he is legging on top. This allows JD to score the ever important escape with 5 seconds left in the match to win 6-5. Winner #5 JD Minch (North Montgomery) #3 Scott Vlink (Crown Point) vs. #6 Royce Deckard (Bloomington South) Team State Champion Coaches collide in the barn burner that sees Deckard come out on top with a last second Firemans Carry that scores him 5 points to win in a final score of 15-13. Winner #6 Royce Deckard (Bloomington South) #2 Bob Hassman (Franklin Community) vs. #7 Bob Harmon (Castle) In the final match of Round #1, Hassman comes away with a late fall in the third period. Getting adjusted to his new bionic knee and hip, he final finds his balance and hits an excellent arm spin to secure the victory with :30 seconds left in the final period. Winner #2 Bob Hassman (Franklin Community) Round #2 to come later.

kfcfanatic
Round #2 Pee-Wee Bracket #1 Leroy Vega (Cal College) vs. #5 Joe Willmann (Lowell) #2 Greg Shaefer (Mater Dei) vs. #3 Brad Harper (Penn) Intermediate Bracket #1 Tony Abbott (Muncie South) vs. #4 Aaron Moss (Ben Davis) #2 Jared Williams (Lawrence North) vs. #6 Brian Seltzer (Elkhart Memorial) Junior Bracket #1 David Maldonado (Merrillville) vs. #4 Ed Pendoski (CIA) #2 Trent McCormick (Yorktown) vs. #3 BJ Faurote (Bellmont) Veteran Bracket #8 Barry Humble (New Haven) vs. #5 JD Minch (North Montgomery) #2 Bob Hassman (Franklin Community) vs. #6 Royce Deckard (Bloomington South) Pee-Wee Bracket #1 Leroy Vega (Cal College) vs. #5 Joe Willmann (Lowell) Vega walks into the match with a definite size disadvantage, but a much better resume. Willmann starts off with a great hi-c, but Vega does a great job fighting his hips back. Second period starts 0-0 but didn?t stay there for long as Vega scores a quick escape right into a takedown right to a tilt. Willmann earns an escape but it is too little too as the damage was done. He could not come back from the 5-0 deficit he started out with. Vega goes on to earn a major. Winner #1 Leroy Vega (Cal College) #2 Greg Shaefer (Mater Dei) vs. #3 Brad Harper (Penn) Wow, my brain hurts when thinking about the possibilities in this match. Mater Dei vs. Mishawaka, IU vs. Purdue, Mater Dei vs. Penn. State Champ vs. State Champ. Some would say to worry for Shaefer because of his 17 staples, but this writer knows that at one point in his IU wrestling career, he lost his first round of an open tournament, split his head open, and wrestled 9 more matches with several staples in his head all nine matches. Harper starts off strong picking up a great takedown and a stalling warning on Shaefer. Shaefer fires back in the second period with an escape. Shaefer cuts Harper in the third and gets a takedown to send the match to overtime. With two seconds left in O.T. Shaefer hits a high crotch crackdown and gets 2 points as the buzzer goes off. Side note: Jimmy Rhodes is cornering Harper goes and gives the official Chuck Barnett the business. Barnett gives him the business by escorting him out of the building. Winner #2 Greg Shaefer (Mater Dei) Intermediate Bracket #1 Tony Abbott (Muncie South) vs. #4 Aaron Moss (Ben Davis) Abbott starts off hot in this match hitting another patented left handed side headlock, but fights off his back and gets an escape takedown to finish the first period down 5-3. Moss starts playing the takedown game and ends the match with a final score of 18-12. Winner #4 Aaron Moss (Ben Davis) #2 Jared Williams (Lawrence North) vs. #6 Brian Seltzer (Elkhart Memorial) In a rematch of the 2008 team state tournaments opening round, Coach Seltzer starts off with a bang. He hits a blast double right to Williams back. Then in a tribute to his 140 pounder Ryan Stahl, he hits an egg role in the end of the first period and gets a fall with one second left on the clock. Winner #6 Brian Seltzer (Elkhart Memorial) Junior Bracket #1 David Maldonado (Merrillville) vs. #4 Ed Pendoski (CIA) These two used to be rivals in the DAC, now rivals on the mat. Maldonado controls the entire match, wrestling mainly from an over-under position and hits two hip tosses. P makes a comeback in the final period but it wasn?t enough to surpass the lead that Maldonado had built. Winner #1 David Maldonado (Merrillville) #2 Trent McCormick (Yorktown) vs. #3 BJ Faurote (Bellmont) In a rematch of the almost annual team regional, Coach McCormick and Coach Faurote do battle on the mat. Two former state champions with high pedigrees. McCormick starts off strong with 3 takedowns in the first period. Size seems to be an issue but Faurote wrestles tough, earning a reversal and a ride out in the second period. McCormick picks bottom going into the third and gets an escape. Faurote gets a stalling point, but it isn?t enough. McCormick comes away with a 7-5 victory. Winner #2 Trent McCormick (Yorktown) Veteran Bracket #8 Barry Humble (New Haven) vs. #5 JD Minch (North Montgomery) Humble and Minch know each other well from their years of service together on the IHSWCA board. It doesn?t pan out well for Humble though, as Minch has a definite size advantage. Minch comes out, grabs a hold of a bear hug and takes Barry down for the fall. Winner #5 JD Minch (North Montgomery) #2 Bob Hassman (Franklin Community) vs. #6 Royce Deckard (Bloomington South) In a match between the two toughest coaches in the entire state, we see Deckard win in a close brawl. The score is 0-0 going into the third, but there have been 19 blood time outs. Both Coaches have black eyes and cuts everywhere. Deckard gets a late escape to win in regulation. Winner #6 Royce Deckard (Bloomington South) Next Round Later
