Hey Andy and Matchick, Here is the line-up for both teams. 96 sent 11 to state, 7 placed in the top 5. 03 sent 10 to state, 7 in top 3. Just Look at the lineups

          03                96                      win          score

103 Bittner vs Schaefer                96            4-0

112 Williams vs Jankowski        96              7-0

119 Hillenbrand vs Head            96              11-0

125 Macke vs Scott Schaefer      03              11-3

130 Coughlin vs J Mayer            03              11-6

135 Scott vs Nurrenburn            03                11-9

140 Lehman vs Boots                    96              14-9

145 Weinzapel vs Armentano    03                14-12

152 Nosko vs Kite                            03                14-15

160 Wildeman vs Mayer              96              17-15

171 Mauer vs Goebel                    03                17-19

189 Coughlin vs Schroeder          96              20-19

215 Unfried vs Voelker                  96              23-19

275 Schwartz vs Boehman            96            26-19 MD 96 wins

I think that obviously there are two big matches at 125 and 160. I gave the match to the person who had more state placings. I think the 03 team was awesome, but I think the 96 team matched up with them very well.

Just my thoughts

I think the '03 team gets bonus pts at 152 and possibly at 145 and 130.  At 215, those Unfried boys love the spladle, so you never know there.  160 would have been a good one to see as well.  I think it would be close either way, but I tend to give the nod to the 03 team.

I may give you bonus points at 130, but Kite was a state qualifier in 96 and lost to the state champ that year from bellmont by 4. At 145, Armentano placed 4th and most of his losses that year were to Thad Oldham, a 2 timer from Castle none by more than 5, so I don't think you could give them bonus points. The Unfried boys loved the spladle, but Voelker placed 5th at state that year losing to Talamantes on his way to 3 state titles.

Still, Weinzapfel and Nosko were pinners.  Weinzapfel got back pts on Tsirtsis so I think he could have to Joe A. as well.  I think Nosko's length/leverage would have given Kite fits.  I'm sure your length have him all sorts of problems in practice.

Here's how I see it

*Schaefer 5th place(former champ) vs. Bittner SQ...possible pin but i will go with tech.  5-0    96

*Jankowski SQ vs. Williams 6th place...toss up IMO...but I will give it to DJ.  8-0    96

*Head 3x state placer vs. Hillenbrand S-SQ...only a major here only cause of Hillenbrands' never quit attitude  12-0    96

*Schaefer 2nd place(2x placer) vs. Macke 3rd place(4x placer)...Another toss up but I like Macke here  12-3    96

*Mayer S-SQ? vs. Coughlin 2nd place(2x runner-up)...not if, its how fast he gets the pin  12-9    96

*Nurrenburn SQ vs. Scott 3rd place(2x placer)...somewhat close cause Nurrenburn was a tough dude, but Scott gets the win  12-12    tie

*Boots 5th place vs. Lehman S-SQ...no bonus points cause Boots wasn't known for getting them, but he would win  15-12    96

*Armentano 4th place vs. Weinzapfel 2x champ, 3x placer...Armentano was just tough enough to keep this to a dec.  15-15    tie

*Kite SQ vs. Nosko 1st place(3x placer)...Kite was tough and Nosko didn't always perform his best at conseco, but he was always was game in duals...I like a fall here.  21-15    03

*Mayer 1st place(2x placer) vs. Wildeman 1st place...Here's where Nick gets his feelings hurt lol. Wildeman was stronger and better on his feet as well as having an awesome turk. Now Nick was great on top and tied people up on his feet, so even though I think Wildeman was strong enough to escape from Nick, I still think Wildeman could take neutral and win...either way a toss up and a dual meet decider.  24-15    03

*Goebel SQ vs. Maurer 3x champ...I think Goebels' heart prevents a pin but he can't keep up on his feet.  29-15    03

*Schroeder S-SQ? vs. J.Coughlin S-SQ...close match but I think Schroeder gets the win.  29-18    03

*Voelker 5th place vs. Unfried SQ...not one match went the distance for Unfried that season, he either got the pin or got pinned. Voelker by pin.  29-24  03

*Eickhoff? vs. Schwartz?...battle of the giants...either could win by fall or decision. I don't believe Eickhoff had a great throw or takedown. Schwartz had a decent headlock...I really don't know here but if Schwartz had to stay off his back I think he could.  29-27    03

All in all its too close to say.  Too many toss ups.  Whoever had the better day wins this dual.  Either way 03 will go down as the best "individual" team with 8 placers, 7 in the top 3, 5 finalists, and 4 Champs...158.5 points at the ind. state meet should stand for a while.

With all that being said I think 2001 should be considered in a dual meet with these two.

2001 8 state qualifiers, 7 placers, 4 finalists, 3 champs

macke 2nd(2xplacer)

c.weinzapfel 1st

scott

nosko 8th(injured, 3rd year before)

maurer 1st

conklin 3rd

ausbrooks S-SQ(7th year before)

raben SQ

dewig S-SQ(SQ 2 years earlier)

a.weinzapfel 1st(SQ year before)

reddington 7th

lewis S-SQ

knight S-SQ

schmitt

I agree with most of your picks, but I think 215 & 275 are definitely toss ups, they can go either way.  I also think that 125, 145, & 171 all have a shot at bonus points, and although I loved your leverage and think  you are one of the best to come out of MD, I think Wildeman can take 160...his strength & animalistic qualities give him the edge.  I say it comes down to heavyweight with a 1-point swing either way.  The teams match up very well...not only with talent, but with heart.

Wstrlgfn,

I totally agree with you on the 03 team being the best tourney team in recent state history(From the 80's +). 7 in the top 3 is incredible and if it wasn't for the unbelievable Griffith boys, this team may have had 6 or even 7. That is crazy. But in this dual, I think 3 matches could go either way, 125, 135 and 160. Nut all in all this would have been a great dual to witness. I guess this would be an unending disagreement on who wins the many good individual matches. As far as 160 and myself, as a wreslter I would have beaten him, as a coach to Sammy in 03 he would have beaten me. I'm glad I didn't have to wrestle him under the lights.
