  1. MD in 1996 was ranked as high as 8th. In 1998, MD was as high as 6th before dropping a dual meet in St Louis. The 2002 team was in the top 20 as was the '03 team. And to tell you about Blair. I wrestled at senior nationals and wrestled in the AA round twice. Once in the winners bracket and then in the loser's bracket. I got beat by the 3rd and 5th placer. I ended up being recruited by West Point. Since it was to late to get into West Point, they gave me the option of going to 2 prep schools on the governments dime. One was Blair and the other was Western Reserve which is right by Walsh in NE Ohio. I would have been in the room wrestling with them but not on the team, or I could be on Blair's team. This is how they get so good every year. I would have been a fifth year senior in high school wrestling for them. As it was I choose WRA.
  2. Wstrlgfn, I totally agree with you on the 03 team being the best tourney team in recent state history(From the 80's +). 7 in the top 3 is incredible and if it wasn't for the unbelievable Griffith boys, this team may have had 6 or even 7. That is crazy. But in this dual, I think 3 matches could go either way, 125, 135 and 160. Nut all in all this would have been a great dual to witness. I guess this would be an unending disagreement on who wins the many good individual matches. As far as 160 and myself, as a wreslter I would have beaten him, as a coach to Sammy in 03 he would have beaten me. I'm glad I didn't have to wrestle him under the lights.
  3. Nice comment Paul... Anyways, people are talking about castle because they are a very tough team, they beat MD and are the first program other than MD from the south to make it to team state. They are well coached, very disciplined wrestlers and seem to be fine young men. I think they will surprise some people up north in a week and at team state. Good Luck Castle
  4. I may give you bonus points at 130, but Kite was a state qualifier in 96 and lost to the state champ that year from bellmont by 4. At 145, Armentano placed 4th and most of his losses that year were to Thad Oldham, a 2 timer from Castle none by more than 5, so I don't think you could give them bonus points. The Unfried boys loved the spladle, but Voelker placed 5th at state that year losing to Talamantes on his way to 3 state titles.
  5. Here they are from the 96 team and what they did during the state tourney: 103 Greg Schaefer (5th) 112 Dan Jankowski (SQ) 119 Kevin Head (3rd) 125 Scott Schaefer (2nd) 130 Brad Turner lost to Monorvia's Andy Wilson in the Ticket Round 135 Roger Nurrenburn (SQ) 140 Brandon Boots (5th) 145 Joe Armentano (4th) 152 Todd Kite (SQ) 160 Nick Mayer (1st) 171 Dan Goebel (SQ) 189 Mike Schroeder lost in the ticket round 14-12 to Franklin 215 Matt Voelker (5th) 275 Matt Boehman lost to 95s state runner up from Franklin Central Scott There where 5 champs at semi-state, 5 runner-ups and 140 got 3rd.
  6. Hey Andy and Matchick, Here is the line-up for both teams. 96 sent 11 to state, 7 placed in the top 5. 03 sent 10 to state, 7 in top 3. Just Look at the lineups 03 96 win score 103 Bittner vs Schaefer 96 4-0 112 Williams vs Jankowski 96 7-0 119 Hillenbrand vs Head 96 11-0 125 Macke vs Scott Schaefer 03 11-3 130 Coughlin vs J Mayer 03 11-6 135 Scott vs Nurrenburn 03 11-9 140 Lehman vs Boots 96 14-9 145 Weinzapel vs Armentano 03 14-12 152 Nosko vs Kite 03 14-15 160 Wildeman vs Mayer 96 17-15 171 Mauer vs Goebel 03 17-19 189 Coughlin vs Schroeder 96 20-19 215 Unfried vs Voelker 96 23-19 275 Schwartz vs Boehman 96 26-19 MD 96 wins I think that obviously there are two big matches at 125 and 160. I gave the match to the person who had more state placings. I think the 03 team was awesome, but I think the 96 team matched up with them very well. Just my thoughts
  7. Oh yea, we were "movie stars" and yes they looked up to all of us because we were winners, but do you want to lower the threshold of the winner to increase participation?
  8. I guess that should be a different post. Maybe I will post it after Team state is over
  9. Nick, graduated in 1996. Member of the 95 and 96 MD football and wrestling teams. Andrew and Jon H, can you answer me which year was MD's best team 03 or 96? I've been in an discussion with some friends and wonder what your opins would be. I could even write you the line-ups. I believe 96 wins hands down.
  10. I do agree with you that the sport is dying in small town Indiana, but it is also dying, imo, throughout the U.S. How many D1 programs are there now? 50-60? D2? Last I heard there was 45. I guess that is off the topic. Anyways, I am all for growing the sport, but I think that you would take away to much by going to a class system. I wrestled for MD and wouldn't want them to be in the small school division now, but what if their program started falling, then where do you put them? I just have a ton of questions on how this would improve the overall quality of Indiana wrestling, not just adding numbers to smaller schools.
  11. MD sent 14 to semi-state in 1996, They had all 14 in the ticket round, had 11 qualify for state and 10 in the semi-state finals
  12. Of course we didn't throw away our awards. But we also knew we were awarded those AA's based on the D2 model. Would most of us rather have went D1 one a full ride? You bet ya. I also know I shouldn't be getting into a typing conversation/ arguement about "true" wrestlers and with Y2( I've followed the board long enough). My comment was not very well thought out. I personally respect everyone who puts on wrestling shoes and tries to go out and win a match. I guess what I meant by that is the competitive spirit of wrestling makes you/me want to beat everyone I can in my weight in that year. My opinion is that we shouldn't do class wrestling. And, yes, people who disagree with me and think we should have class wrestling are also "true" wrestlers. I shouldn't have posted the comment that way.
  13. Nice to see you are alive, Andrew. And I wasn't really trying to call these seniors out, per se. But if you have been through the program and know MD, we rely on our seniors to get us through the tough duals and to pick up the underclassmen when they have tough matches. MD has done this well for the past 15 years and when it doesn't happen, it shocks people around the program, that's all. I do think the seniors had a good year in the fact that they beat some top-notch teams (Castle, the first time, included), they did well in Ohio and St Louis, but every MD team knows that not making it to Team State is a disappointment and a terrible way to end your senior year at MD. Every senior at MD wants to leave some kind of legacy and for yours to be the first team not to make it to state, it would be quite disappointing. In a way, I feel sorry for these seniors, and for their senior year at MD to finish this way.
  14. I would call them "true" wrestlers. College wrestling is so much different than High school, that it I don't think it should be compared to Indiana State wrestling. I wrestled D2 and I can tell you the difference between that and D1, D3, juco, and the rest. College divisions have to do with the amount of money and scholarships that can be given to the wrestler. Also, we are talking about a national level. I can bet you no D2 wrestler would want you to put the D2 wrestling into classes based on how many people attend their university. Any college with less than 5000 can be 1a of D2 and any over can be 2aa of D2. I don't think may would go for that
  15. I really can't believe true wrestlers would be in favor of class wrestling. Isn't it 2 men enter, 1 man leaves? One man wins. I am from a small school and loved wrestling against the bigger schools. No way should Indiana ever put wrestling into classes. If they did that for Individual, there would be no meaning in state champ. And for Team State? Do we really want to hurt how great this tourney has become? You wouldn't have the PM-MD or MD-Mishawaka duals from a couple years ago. Instead you would have a finals that appear more like a team regional. I like the team regional but nowhere near as much as I like Team State
