The excessive use of injury time must stop. There is a difference between being injured & being hurt or tired. As a wrestler you are going to feel pain and be fatigued to the point where you believe you can not go on; and then you will push further. That is part of what makes wrestling the greatest sport in the world. With that said coaches need to govern their wrestlers better than this.
Once in an offseason tournament I was losing 8-4 in the third period and i signaled for injury time to catch my breath. I was 14 at the time and had seen other wrestlers do this. It only lasted a few seconds but it was enough, as after the break I went on to win 12-9. My coach told me there was nothing honorable about what I did, and had me forfeit that match. He told me I was done for the day and I should reflect on why what I did was wrong. That was the only time in my wrestling career that i used injury time and the lesson hit home.
It taught me that in wrestling and in life you are often presented with an easy way out, and that the type of man you are is determined by what you do in those situations. I am just grateful that I had wrestling and those coaches who groomed me into the man I am now rather than the man I could of been without.
So unless you're in a situation like Jay Jaggers in the '08 NCAA finals, don't use Injury Time:

Nah, constant themes cutting weight, moves guys used to beat us, and always how tough our practices were. Everyone beat someone to get to regional, semi state, and state; only 14 end their career with a win. Respect for doing what we all had to do to compete has made the accolades less important and fellowship strong.
Do what ever we need to do to get more kids involved and 35 years after it is all over they will still be thanking and remembering their coaches!

I am not defending the officiating this year, but I accept it, because kids I coach (to include my son) had the opportunity to wrestle this year!
I originally only officiated in emergencies or so events would not get cancelled and I got a lot of calls. I did this for three years and the number of matches I worked kept growing. I did not officiate this year for several reasons, but mostly to be with my son for his senior year, I let people know last year I would most likely not be available and I still got a lot of calls and requests to work events. I did not renew my license this year just so I would not accept matches out of guilt for kids not being able to wrestle or having events last all day since only 2 mats were used instead of 3. All this attention was not because I was good but because the schools couldn't find any officials for their events.
If there are not enough officials with our current group of Great/Good/Indifferent/Inexperienced/Bad officials how can we place additional limitations or regulations on who deserves to do what events? There were 12 officials at Evansville (guessing the other 3 were the same), and as always some officials will be better than others, but how do we know these are not the best 48 available? You may think that is a sad state of affairs, but unless we as community start growing the pool of officials this could be the standards our matches will see for a long time.
There also should be some perspective added to the view of who is qualified. At some point in time each official will have the first sectional, regional, semi-state, or state when would our community like that to happen? Two, three, five, ten years experience what if there are not 48 officials with 10 years experience, would you prefer to cancel a semi-state or use what we have?
A question I would pose to people is would you cancel a wrestling event before you would use a less experienced official or one you know to be lacking skills? Why do you think the same officials are scheduled for your local events each year? Ask yourself these questions at the beginning of the season when excitement is high and kids are ready to go, not when the season is over.
Someone already said they disagree with the argument that they should put a striped shirt on and grab a whistle, well if not you then who?
And yes it looks like I will get my license again next year, but I am not looking for any events. : )

I coached a young man that went to multiple state finals as a youngster. He was very talented. Talented enough to qualify for state a couple of times. He has told me since that he thought the state meet was out of reach. Why? Our school had had 3 total state qualifier (all before his time), a parade of coaches, no real weight room or weight program and marginal school and community support. In short, he didn't think he could run with the big dogs even though some of those factors changed while he went through high school.

If this is your first time or in my case the last time. Make sure you enjoy the ride.
What a absolute privilege it has been to go on this journey with my son.
There has been some incredible highs and some bitter disappointment. But
the journey has been awesome!
I can remember when his first goal was to get threw an open tournament without getting pinned.
His second match was against the ISWA champion. A girl named Kayla Miracle. Needless to say.
He lost. His second goal was to win half his matches. After that they just kept getting a little harder
and a little harder. It was a long journey to get to this point and It could not have had more fun.
In the end, there is only one guy who gets his hand raised. But if you
made it this far you are a Champion in my book.
Good luck to everyone this weekend. Hope you enjoy the ride!

You all keep missing the point of advocating for two classes.
It's about improving the sport for as many programs as possible.
The program at South Adams is a perfect example of why we need classes, lol
And for those referencing the "feelings" of our state champs, who cares?
There are four thousand varsity wrestlers in the state, I couldn't care less about the self esteem of our champs lol

randalllynch reacted to Y2CJ41 in All Year vs Seasonal Wrestlers
Here are my experiences at a big school and small school
Small school
More multi-sport athletes, such as about 95% of the kids, which makes it tough to do anything in the summer as they are being pulled 2-3 different ways. The kids that want to succeed come, the others...well don't as much. The one thing I noticed is some kids that were already varsity did not come too much. The ones that put in the time were ones who knew they needed to to stay varsity. Most knew that they would be varsity no matter what they did in the off-season, so they didn't come as much. In turn they would work harder at other sports where they weren't full-time varsity or were more "games."
Big school
We have a lot of freshmen that play other sports, but that number is probably cut in half when they are sophomore. Most the kids that want to be varsity know they must wrestle close to year round in order to make the lineup. That also goes for the other sports they are in like football, cross country, or track. The multi-sport athletes are usually behind these kids because they split their time between sports. We have a great relationship with our football coach and that helps, but at the end of the day the kids begin to realize if they want to be the starter they need more focus on their favorite sport.

but...if this is what high school wrestling is evolving to, then we will see a lot more wrestlers doing it. The Iron Shiek had a mean camel clutch and when he loaded that boot up, you better watch out.

I do not see a Madison repeat at regional this year but the regional champs do hail from the same sectional. Jennings County is loaded and will rack up the points. The big boys up top will provide fireworks as the brackets are very balanced and can end up several different ways. New Albany will challenge JC but unless they get some big time help I don't see them pulling off a regional title.
Going to state: Graham Rooks, Tristan Sellmer, Hunter Castleberry, Andrew Herrin, Bryant Haynes
Hopefulls: Noah Franklin, James Wise, Tristan Dowell, Sean Brown, Tre Lynch, Matt Hayes, Zach Higdon

randalllynch reacted to navy80 in Bloomington South Regional Preview
Last year the Northview Sectional dominated the Southridge Sectional but it doesn’t appear it will be that way this year!
This year the Bl. South regional is down but they will still send a few to state. Koontz, Schermer, Dull, and Hunt are a sure lock to make it to state. McCoy, Barlow, Dalton, and Songer have an outside shot. Semi state ranked wrestlers are below
Hunt BS 36-0 #1 @ 106
Hurst JA 30-5 #10 @ 120
Lewis THS 29-8 #6 @ 126
Schermer BS 32-3 #3 and McCoy NV 36-6 # 6 @ 132
Dull THN 25-4 #2 and Barlow BS 32-8 #8 @ 145
Koontz ED 36-0 #1 @ 160
Webb BS 31-8 #7 @ 170
Dalton BN 36-3 #6 @ 182 and Duregger NV 29-10 @ 182
Songer JA 25-5 #3 at 195
Dixon BS 30-13 #8 at 220
106: Hunt BS 33-0 looks to be the clear favorite. He should meet up with Meyerholts SR 38-7 or Sullivan ED 27-14 in the finals. McGlothin BN 22-14 looks to battle it out for 3rd place with the loser of Meyerholtz/Sullivan/
113: Last year Stull BS 25-11 beat Pemberton THS 32-6 in the Sectional Championship match. This year Pemberton won in the finals. These two should meet for a Regional title for the rubber match! Gosney BN 27-11 and Ray BNL 23-5 will battle for 3rd.
120: Hurst JA 30-5 is the defending regional champ at 106 and is the favorite again, but don’t count out Cook NV 35-5 who is having an exceptional year. Two first round barn burners include super tough Patton CC 36-4 against Stillions BS 27-16 both of whom won sectionals last year and went to semi state. Bromser FP 31-13 faces Koening THS 19-17 in the other tough first round matchup.
126: Lewis THS 29-8 is a defending regional champ and will have his work cut out for him in the finals against Jasper’s Tommy Brock 22-8. Dalton BN 23-13 and Fleck FP 25-12 will battle for third.
132: Schermer BS 32-3 is the clear favorite and has beaten McCoy NV 36-6 several times in the last two years but each time has been a decision. Will McCoy get his vengeance when it matters most? Look for Schermer and McCoy to punch their ticket to state in Evansville. Third place will be between sectional champ Glenn FP 32-15 and newcomer Bedwell SU 26-8.
138: This looks to be the deepest weight class with several key first round matchups. Grissom MI 26-3/Webb BS 21-13 will battle to face Hannah ED 34-5 in the semifinals. Gibson NV 32-10 will face a tough freshman from SR Kane 31-16 for the chance to wrestle two time semi state qualifier Koerner WA 30-6. Don’t count out Williams from THS 22-11 to upset Koerner first round.
145: Dull THN 25-4 and Barlow BS 32-8 will battle for a third time in the finals. Dull pinned Barlow once this year and their second match got cut short with a Barlow injury. Look for the winner of this match to punch their ticket to the state finals! Eckert JA 14-10 will face the winner of Rogier FP 32-9 and Aydelott ED 26-14 for third place.
152: Mundy SR 33-3 looks to surpass his older brother with a regional championship. Standing in his way is experienced grappler from Edgewood Blake 26-10. Blake has probably the state’s best practice partner in Koontz. Agular NK 35-7 should battle Fleck FP 29-13 for third place.
160: When you make the cut to be in the commercial for the best high school camp in the nation you know you are a somebody. Gabe Koontz ED 37-0 looks continue his dominance with another regional title. Koontz will meet a wrestler he is familiar with in the finals in Hay BS 25-18. Don’t count out his 18 losses because B. South wrestles one of the toughest schedule in the state. Rominger PA 13-9 and Inman BN 28-13 will battle for third.
170: Joey Thomas of NK 36-4 showed he can compete with the best when he pinned Webb of BS 31-8. Webb recently went a one point match with Koontz. 170 is the deepest in this regional and will produce four solid wrestlers onto semi state. Cole Kreilin JA 24-8 has been to semi state two times in his career and looks to make it a third trip. Webb and Kreilin will meet up in the semifinals (Webb won by pin in their last meetin). The other semifinals will be between Thomas and Hendrich NV 32-6. My upset is Hendrich beats Thomas and then beats Webb to calim a regional title. This weight class is truly a pickems!
182: Dalton BN 36-3 should meet up with Harter SR 35-8 in the finals. If Tedrow MI 19-3 and Smith JA 22-9 can slip past their tough first round matchups they will battle for third.
195: Jasper’s Ian Songer 25-5 made it to semi state as a sophomore but not as a junior. He will be the favorite and has already beaten BN Wade 21-9 earlier in the year 8-2. Bringing up the rear will be Wilson ED 20-12 and Nordhoff SR 23-14.
220: Short of WV 24-2 is the clear favorite but don’t count out Washington’s Meade 31-6 or Sullivan’s Williams 25-8. The fourth place finisher will be between two super tough sophomores Michel SR 22-10/Rivera THS 24-7.
285: the young and large sophomore from THN looks to win his first of many regionals. Dwyer THN 27-6 will battle England MI 24-6 in the finals. Miller NK 29-8 and Hancock SU 29-7 will fight to not get a regional champ at semi state.

randalllynch reacted to hook and half in Castle Regional Preview
In the Evansville and Central sectionals, the big names rolled, while several upstarts made their presence known. The Castle regional--traditionally one of the toughest in the state--will feature a host of nail-biting first-round matches, semifinals and championship bouts.
106- Castle's Baxter Annakin bounded to a sectional title and is the favorite for a regional championship. In semifinal action, North Posey's Levi Miller will see the winner of the Harley Gorman (Mt. Vernon) and Kyler McKinney (Princeton) bout.
113- Southern Indiana wrestling fans breathed a sigh of relief when Mt. Vernon's Paul Konrath returned to action after a potential season-ending injury at the Big 8 championship. Konrath should see Mater Dei's Kyle Luigs in the semifinal. Logan Dilbeck of Gibson Southern will likely fill the other slot in the final. The trio also holds the top three rankings in the Evansville semi state. Don't be surprised to see them go at it again at the Ford Center.
120- After a two-month injury recovery, Reitz's Tyler Ferguson returned to action on Saturday. With only one match under his belt, Ferguson was sharp and mopped up the field. Mater Dei sophomore Will Egli has produced another stellar season and hopes to improve upon his fifth-place finish from the 2014 state tournament. Expect the duo to butt heads on the center mat.
126- Mater Dei's Alex Johnson looks to capture his third regional title. In order to do so, he will need to get past the winner of the Caleb Craig (Reitz) and Michael Polen (Gibson Southern) match. Craig and Polen are both very solid and will produce an interesting dust-up. The other side of the bracket will also be competitive, as Castle's 32-7 Braedon Clopton and North's 34-4 Nick Burke will meet for a title shot opportunity.
132- In his last six matches, Mater Dei's Nick Lee has spent less than six minutes on the mat. Ranked number-one in the state, expect Lee's rampage to continue. Mt. Vernon's Austin Bethel and Princeton's Chase Wilson should meet for a rematch of their Big 8 championship bout. The winner will meet Lee for the title.
138- A couple of weeks ago, southern Indiana 138-pounders began to re-think their weight class choice. There are five, top-shelf grapplers here; only four will advance. Gibson Southern's fifth-ranked Kyle Todrank will see Memorial's Johny Wargel in the first round. Both are seniors; one of them will see their high school career end here. Mater Dei's third-ranked freshman, Joe Lee, will likely meet Reitz's AJ Dixon in one semifinal. The Todrank/Wargel winner will meet Castle's ninth-ranked sectional champ, Austin Ramsey, in the other semifinal. Do not miss a match at 138!
145- Fifth-ranked Blake Jourdan of Mater Dei and Castle's tenth-ranked Patrick Schnell headline this very competitive weight class. Both are dynamic. Expect another exciting match. Memorial's Chance Williams, Central's Hunter McCormick and Mt. Vernon's Peyton Whoberry will fight it out to earn a semistate berth.
152- With a title this Saturday, Central's Isaiah Kemper will have earned three consecutive regional championships. Ranked second, Kemper will likely realize the accomplishment. On the other side of the bracket, Pike Central's Colton O'Neal and Castle's Jacob Farmer will meet. The winner gets Kemper in the final. Heritage Hills' Cordell Miller and Mater Dei's Mitch Lehman will also be in the medal hunt.
160- Populated by wrestlers who are defined by action, this class give the fans something for which to cheer. Castle's veteran senior Turner Lockyear has put up 37 wins on the season, in addition to SIAC and sectional titles. Lockyear's Warrick county rival, Tecumseh's Tristan McDaniel, scorched the field at Central. A senior, McDaniel looks poised for a post-season run. Do not overlook Tell City's Elliot Brown or Mater Dei's Nick Buedel, as both are capable of big wins and upsets.
170- 170 is a very balanced class, possessing three individuals with the potential to win. The toughest road belongs to Mater Dei's Ashton Forzley and Memorial's Noah Huelsing, as they will meet in the semifinal. Forzley, with a pair of state qualifications, is a big-match wrestler. Huelsing counters with a sizable gas tank and an early-season win over Forzley. Castle's Blake Jeffress, who finished second to Forzley at the SIAC meet, will inhabit the other slot in the final.
182- Mater Dei's 182-pound senior, Sam Bassemier, has wrestled a brutal schedule en route to a 26-1 record and continues to slide in the rankings, ending the season at 14th. On Saturday afternoon, expect to see him on the center mat. After this coming weekend, Tecumseh's Jeremy McKinley will no longer be off the radar. Expect him to give Mt. Vernon's Tyler DeKemper a very tough match. The winner earns a ticket to the final.
195- Beginning in the first round, when Central's Gabe Patterson meets the sectional champion, Jake LaMar of Castle, you will find many competitive matches at 195 pounds. Patterson, with his never-say-die attitude is likely the best fourth-place finisher in the field. Marcus Gahagen of Memorial will meet Tecumseh's Adam Lytle in another huge first round match. Gahagen has accumulated 21 wins against the backdrop of a tough schedule. Lytle suffered his first loss of the season at the Central sectional and will look for redemption. On the other side of the bracket, South Spencer's Keith Barclay will put his 38 wins against Vincennes Lincoln's Nic Dellion, the owner of 35 wins. The Barclay/Dellion winner will meet Mater Dei's Chase Anslinger in the semifinal. Try to pick 1-2-3-4!
220- If you have not seen Gibson Southern's Cory Klem, after Saturday, you will understand his sixth-ranking. Klem is up-tempo, strong and slick. He will be in the face off. Harrison's LaTerrance Kyles and Mater Dei's Kurtis Wilderman will dance in the bottom half of the bracket, in a rematch of their SIAC final. Mt. Vernon's Tristan Choate is formidable. He has spoiler potential and will look to maximize his regional performance.
285- Like 195, 285 has a number of potential champions. Mt. Vernon's Wade Ripple will square off with Tecumseh's Colton Dossett in the opening round. The duo has accounted for 53 wins against 12 losses. Pike Central's 24-2 Bryce Manning will meet Memorial's 27-11 Will Page, in another first-round barn burner. As sectional champs, Mater Dei's Adrian Butler and South Spencer's 42-7 RJ Shaw will also be in the hunt for a title.
Hook's Random Comments:
· Watch the Tecumseh fans. They are loud, rowdy and highly partisan. This tiny school provides the model of what wrestling fans should be!
· Hook's daugther, Hookticia, pointed out that Castle not only has huge slices of pizza, but offers baked potatoes "as big as your head."
· I love the intensity of Central's head coach, Mike Lapadat. How many calories does Lap burn on a typical Saturday? He is to coaching wrestling what James Brown was to show business.
· North Posey's coaches, Cody Moll and Sam Goebel, look lean and mean. I will wager, that with a week to cut, both could make weight.
I have been criticized for the fact that my previews are light on predictions. Since this is my last one of the year, I will go out on a limb.
These predictions are guaranteed.
· Mt Vernon's head coach, Tim Alcorn, will get very excited.
· At least once, in unison, the Mater Dei crowd will yell, "Two!"
· Castle will do an outstanding job of hosting.
· The Castle regional will produce a number of state placers...maybe a couple of champs.
· A Castle sectional vs. Central sectional post will be started on Indiana Mat.
"Your" welcome.

Season recap: New Albany started the year off not quite living up to expectations but they found their stride as of late. Jeffersonville and Floyd have quite a bit of youth and new varsity wrestlers in the lineup and their seasons have been up and down as one would expect. Corydon went from a player in the sectional to nearly invisible, the losses of Kauffer, Lahue, Kopp and Robinson were huge as all 4 should have been going to semi-state.
State hopefuls: Noah Franklin New Washington, Tristan Selmer Floyd Central, Hunter Castleberry New Albany, Bryant Haynes Charlestown, Tre Lynch New Albany
None are locks and will need a few breaks to do it but I am saying there is a chance
Sectional Champ locks: Aaron Gohl New Albany, Stephen Jones Jeffersonville
Outta nowhere (3 seed or worse): Sean Brown Floyd Central, David Brann Corydon Central, Josh Rinzel Providence
While Brown is the best of this bunch the big boys may have the best chance at an upset title.

randalllynch reacted to Rookies03 in Stalling
One of the funniest things I see in gyms every weekend is the Coach that immediately wants a stalling call for backing up in neutral, not coming off the hips on top, or not coming up on bottom but when their wrestler does the exact same thing and stalling is call its the worst call the ref made all day. If coaches want refs to be more consistent at calling stalling maybe coaches should be more objective in their views on stalling calls.
