FCFIGHTER170 reacted to NavyGonzo in Best to have never won it?
I've always had the belief that there are more factors than just how many times you placed high. An argument that holds the most weight to me is how many wins you have over the State Champs, especially in the season that they earned the title... Again, this is just my opinion, but Ty Mills would be easily #1 with multiple wins, in multiple seasons, over that season's weight class champion.
Other notables using my criteria would be Rickie Elkins and Randy Baker
Elkins was runner-up as a junior, Nationally-Ranked as a senior, was upset first round in a come-from-behind pin. Had wins over both of the wrestlers who wrestled in the finals that year, including an 8-3 win the following weekend at team state over the champ.
Baker was a 4X placer (3,3,6,7). Finished 7th his senior season, beating that season's state champ three times, including Regional and Semi-State. Baker was heavily favored his Junior and Senior seasons, but I believe was dealing with some lingering injuries and was upset in the quarter-finals both years.
And yes, a little bit of my "Early-2000's" bias is showing here...

FCFIGHTER170 got a reaction from Cricket21 in Best to have never won it?
He lost it the conference Finals when he was very sick but no excuse he was beaten by Huntington Norths Nick/logan Randle at the NCC championships keeping BC from being a four-time conference champion! BC had beaten him pretty handily earlier in the season for losing to him at conference. What's even crazier is that was Randall's only loss going into State at 41-1 and he would lose a heartbreaker 4-3 to Mason Todd in the first round... That 112 bracket is one of the most loaded brackets I've ever seen in the state finals history... What's even more wild is semi state that year Campbell won, the top four were Campbell, Todd, McKinley and Harvey. That is three state champs and a two-time runner-up all in the same semi state LOL.. Campbell lost to the state champ back 2-0, but that bracket had so many legendary guys that I'm going to have to post it.

As a part of the Cascade community and having a son on the team we are saddened by this news. We wish Quinn all the best and are thankful for what he has done to help propel our program forward. He will be missed and someone will get a great coach in their program ... I have no doubt it wont take long!!
The cupboard isn't empty, lots of solid underclassmen back and some 8th graders coming up to fill in some spots!

FCFIGHTER170 reacted to QuinnHarris in Cascade
Hey everyone.
I made an announcement on Facebook but wanted to share here as well because I want a great coach to come take this over.
Yesterday I resigned as the Head Wrestling Coach at Cascade High School.
To many this will come as a shock and it has absolutely nothing to do with Cascade or the state of the program as both of those are in amazing shape.
I had to make a decision for myself and do what was best for me professionally to pursue other opportunities.
Thank you to everyone who has supported me the past 2 seasons!!
I can promise you will see me in a corner next season I just don’t know what colors I will be wearing!
Anyone interested in the job at Cascade please reach out I would love to get you in contact with the right people!

FCFIGHTER170 reacted to ILUV2PIN in Most Impressive Freshman Campaigns
Saw it early in this thread, but I give the nod to Jason Tsirtsis.... Tshirts beating Cashe in the semis as a freshy was epic. Still my favorite match I've watched in person. Sure, Mendez beat a former state champ, too. But let's be real Watts was never on Quiroga's level. Cashe was a frickin AA at Purdue.
-
FCFIGHTER170 reacted to maligned in Most Impressive Freshman Campaigns
Although Tylin's freshman campaign may or may not be in the top couple campaigns ever, what made his state finals so captivating was the "surprise" element of it to so many of us. I think we'd far underestimated his ability for 3 reasons:
1. He took losses at his own grade level in the offseason, finishing as clearly the 3rd best kid at Middle School state, for example.
2. Although NC certainly has a great history, more recent history says eastern Indiana kids with good records will flop at semi-state or state eventually because they (according to perception) didn't face much during the season. (I'd compare this element to what caught us off guard with Parris. ..."Lawrenceburg?..ok, we'll see at semi-state" ...and then by state, "Holy crap, this kid's going to be a national-level star.")
3. He just had a brother come through at roughly his weight range that is very good, but not national caliber.
In retrospect, we should have seen the signs, but these details whispered to us that it might be a fluke or that he might fold under pressure.
He was amazing to watch last weekend. I LOVE it when a truly gifted kid breaks out like that, and you realize he's one of those special ones that is ascending on a much sharper trajectory from the "normal" good wrestlers.

Totally agree!!! Only points given up were by escapes. Beyond the tournament, Bryce didn’t allow a takedown, back points, reversal all year… any points scored were by escape.
