I don't really have a dog in this fight but I don't like this train of thought and for the record, I'm a Sam Riesen fan.

When you have a committee deciding things about other people's programs, then you have an obligation to be able to explain yourself and to do that exact thing when asked.  Maybe not on the board, but the reasoning should be readily available.  It's the same thing with the sectional realignment.  There is a committee that does the leg work for the IHSAA and then the IHSAA decides.  But, when decisions are being made about 300+ programs, then those people have a duty to explain things.  In the last year, I have heard from over 15+ head coaches that Rochester is moving back to the ECC Semi-State.  That's frustrating to me.  Why would other programs know about my program before I do?  Why is it still difficult to get a straight answer?  It'd be nice to know so I can start working on changing our schedule.  Anyway, now I'm just venting.

I'm not a big fan of "secrecy" and I feel like these are always two big decisions that are always kept a "secret".  I have the same gripe with the IHSAA.  Why does everything have to be a big secret.  You make the decision, so stand by it and explain it when asked.  Again, when you represent a larger group and you make decisions on what is and is not best for the people and programs in that group, then you have an obligation to explain your reasoning to that group.

I started the Rent A Wrestler program my first year at Rochester in 1996.  Been doing it ever since.  It's awesome to see so many programs now doing it.  Our community loves it.  It's gotten to the point that I rarely advertise it anymore.  The community just knows, that from April -August, they can call me.

Agree 100%, Martinsville was a great host for 1A and 2A but it was way too crowded.  Fans had no place to sit, 2A for the most part was in a different gym so you couldn't watch it any way.  Ideally have 4 host sites and be located in middle of the state to reduce travel time for all teams.

On the heals of Marshall Fishback's run... here is a list of the wrestlers who went to state as a senior only and brought back the gold.  Curious if others know how the guys did the previous year before their title. It's impressive the jumps some made in one year.

I really love our state tournament, I do but the IHSAA MUST do better for our kids.  Some things that need to be addressed by our association...

    1.  Our kids should not have to camp out in a storage area and required to use a service elevator to sit in nosebleed seats.  You should be able to sit with your family/school fans/etc or have seating for them closer to the floor.
    2.  Bathrooms and showers should be made available...not the one stall bathrooms.  The locker rooms should be available at all sessions.
    3.  1 Session, 1 March of Champions on Friday.  Now that we know we can start it at 11am, we should do that instead of getting kids back to their hotels late on Friday night.
    4.  The 1lb allowance on Saturday.  Mr. Faulkens was/is wrong in his interpretation.  The officials and our association should have stood up to him on that issue.

Just my thoughts...this tournament is supposed to be about the kids and, in numerous instances, it was not.

We use a Sterilaser.  We dry mop to make sure we get any hair, dirt, etc.  We have HS, MS, and Elem. that share our wrestling room on specific days.  When we have a dual or tournament, we dry mop and sterilaser the mats.

I'm guessing but we probably actually wet mopped our mats less than 3x this year.  Zero skin issues.  Now the other thing we do is we make our HS kids shower at school after practice using either Defense Soap or Hibiclens.  We also launder their towels and clothes...everyday.  Many of our MS kids shower at school but it's not mandatory.

I may not have the exact wording but here is what he said when Coach Harris from Cascade questioned him...

Wrestlers get the 1lb allowance on Friday because some school couldn't practice on Thursday.  But at the end of the last match on Friday that 1lb drops off and the weight class resets, so 109 goes back to 108.  Then you get the 1lb again for being a consecutive day tournament.  So 108 = 109 again.

I have not been able to find his interpretation anywhere in the rulebooks, NFHS Rules, or in the Winter Bulletin.  I have not spoken to any coach who can find that interpretation either.

I will say this...in all of my emails and face-to-face conversations with Mr. Faulkens, he has always taken his time and explained things to me and been cordial and respectful.  I know he loves wrestling, I really believe that.  In this instance, I believe he was wrong.
