So you don't get out much?  ;)

  2. Personally, I think friendofrunningwriter should be nominated for post of the year, if such a thing existed.  He was blunt and honest - warts and all.  Here's the bottom line: Until you can guarantee more than a few teams have a chance to win, and/or give a crap about the team title NOTHING is going to change.

If you have to force teams to not send their JV or stick around to see who wins the title, why bother?

In a somewhat subconscious way, I think class wrestling is being used as a solution to apathy or a cure for all of wrestling's "ills." More opportunities for kids is never a bad thing, but wrestling has and always be a tough sell; it's an acquired taste and it's not for everybody.

  3. FYI-Evansville Mater Dei is not a 1A school. If they chose not to compete in 3A next year in the IHSWCA event, they would be in 2A.

This thread is just as much about the RETURN of the TEAM state dual tournament as it is about class.

Does anyone want to defend the lack of a TEAM tournament in Indiana. Classed or unclassed, I don't care.

    WE NEED A TEAM EVENT.

    I'll bite:

    1. Back when there was a dual tourney, teams sent JV wrestlers or forfeited weight classes when they knew they were going to get smoked or didn't want their wrestlers cutting weight mid-week.

    2. To some degree, I think the elimination of the team tournament has cut down on SOME of the rampant transfers going on creating HS teams that were essentially extensions of wrestling academies.

    3. I am sure many will disagree, but I think wrestling is mostly an individual sport.

  4. How does that work.   Does the dual Champion get a trophy that's 3x bigger than the tournament champion?

I'm guessing here, but the logic is that the dual meets are a better representation of a team championship than the individual tourney. 75% might also eliminate the possibility of ties (e.g. teams flip flopping places from finish in duals and tourney). Either way, kudos to the Portage staff and administration for making a decision they feel is in the best interest of their program and being upfront about their intentions.

  5. They conceded that McCormick could not beat Micic.  There was a competitive advantage for them to have McCormick rested for the remainder of his matches.

I understand the strategy of it, however my opinion is that if you forfeit a match like that you should be done for the rest of the day at whatever tournament you are at.  Takes all the BS out of it.  If you're hurt....you're hurt.  If you can still get through on placement to the next week, then maybe you've had a chance to rest/recover/get checked out and be cleared to wrestle again

Like I said, I guess I gave the people involved the benefit of the doubt to do the right thing.

That being said, I think there are situations where living to fight another day are appropriate.  For example, Mark Myers with a torn ACL forfeiting to Andrew Howe several years ago.

  6. I think most people see that situation as different from a wrestler winning Friday night, forfeiting to the best wrestler in the weight class, then going on to wrestle two consolation matches just hours after forfeiting.

Forfeiting gives you 0% chance of winning, wrestling at least provides a 1% chance.  Micic was an absolute beast that year, but I don't recall any matches where he ripped limbs from an opponent's body or rendered anyone unconscious. If he did, kudos to Stevan!! Given his talent,  I guess I don't buy the conspiracy theories that McCormick forfeited the match to avoid the potential for a new injury or avoiding embarrassment. In fact, you can make the argument forfeiting is far more scrutinized than getting destroyed in a match. Otherwise, we wouldn't be talking about this topic. Then again, maybe I'm giving certain people too much credit for doing the right thing?

  7. Can we agree that forfeiting for strategy is poor form when it isn't due to injury? However, when it involves injury a coach needs to consider what's best for his student-athlete. Secondly, it's not as if forfeits at the individual state finals is a rampant problem, so let's not go overboard here. There will still be a state finals this year, nobody is getting a refund, and this isn't a $64.95 PPV card with a main event fighter withdrawing an hour before the broadcast.

Lastly, in my opinion, Yorktown has "earned" ridicule with their past/present student transfer practices, but drudging up the forfeit stuff with Micic is not a fair characterization of what actually occurred.

  8. I think Loki's point was Fabio was "throwing dirt"(your words) on Penn's attempt to beef up it's wrestling schedule.  Perhaps a supporter of all Indiana wrestling programs could say something positive about Penn's attempt to challenge themselves against the best of the best? Or not, but then you have to prepare to have it thrown back at you.  Lastly, Fabio's a big boy he can defend himself.

  9. For all intensive purposes Oak Park is suburb/village area (same with River Forest) is within the greater Chicago area. They may have their own specific town setup and like the sense of independence, but basically is engulfed in Chicago in a similar way to Speedway or Broad Ripple have with Indianapolis.  If you prefer by or right outside Chicago though, I guess I can go that route.

But yes, a super power house team with most of their starters in the national rankings or at least honorable mentions.  Penn will definitely have their hands full.  If I recall correctly Carmel wrestled them at an event last year.

Don't worry about sportsfangms. He typed his response from a Lincoln Park loft wearing his hipster oversized Raybans, skinny jeans, cardigan sweater and Sperry deck shoes (even though he's never ridden in a boat in his life).

  10. So are you saying that the ISWA can do without the business of everyone who felt slighted by the ISWA?

Nope.  I'm saying fanning the flames on a website isn't the solution to the problem. If I was more directly affected by the ISWA's actions perhaps I might be more incensed than I am. However, I hope I would be able to put the totality of the ISWA and their actions into perspective. Starting a post saying the "ISWA needs to be put on notice" is bush league in my opinion, and quite frankly the guy ticked me off to the point I felt compelled to say something.  Don't worry AJ, I am going back into my bunker and will let the geniuses solve all of Indiana wrestling's faults.

  11. Lets put this in perspective.  Once again for the 100th time ISWA is a business and should advertise, communicate and seek as many wrestlers as possible to grow said business.  Warsaw is a pretty big school and if I decide after my son graduates to continue to put more focus in the kids program and grow it, than who should be wooing who.  HYWAY has no problem putting together a list of people to notify, maybe I push my kids toward that way.  I love Freestyle, but not going to spend my time trying to track down information that is not even posted on ISWA website (waver information for example), not to mention changed rules at the last minute.  My son is a 10 year ISWA member and used to get information in the mail but for some reason that has changed.

Considering Warsaw is a 6A school with one state qualifier in 2014-2015 and a pretty non-existent feeder program (based on your posts), I think the ISWA can survive without your membership. Maybe you should focus on the business of improving Warsaw wrestling?

  12. Honest question, you should have a section director w/ a phone number.

I understand it's frustrating, I'm not a board member or anything w/ ISWA, just trying to get solutions. Sometimes a phone call or a face to face can get better results than electronic communications.

The subtle south shots are nice though I like them. I got a bag full of region and even worse region rejects quips but I sit them b/c I have like 2 friends in the region and don't want to offend.

Worse case scenario down here we pick up our fancy mouth speaker that's wired to that wooden box and the local operator patches us through to whomever we are needing to talk to.

I actually have a can and rope that goes to Jeff, when I need Danny or Louis I send smoke signals (hopefully wind is blowing east to west) and then we chat it up on the cans.

Point of clarification: Penn is only considered part of the region when bragging about semi-state superiority.

  13. Yes I do

Devils advocate: if you knew the two tourney rule was not going to be enforced why didn't you tell the kids in your program who quit training?

This whole issue is a debacle from beginning to end, and as usual the kids are the ones who suffer.  Common sense isn't that common apparently.

  14. Do you make rules for your team or family, then after half of them fulfill the requirements say..."awe you didn't have to do that, I really wasn't going to enforce that rule anyway."

Do you know for a fact they intended to backtrack the entire time?  I think it's fair to question their judgment about changing the rule, but your quote above is essentially saying the ISWA intentionally conspired to change the rule the whole time. Questioning their integrity and their decision making are two different things, in my opinion.

  15.

When asked about Indiana’s high school tournament format, Ersland said he prefers to keep a one-class system.

“Personally I like the one class tournament,” Ersland said. “I can understand a two class format as well. But as far as evaluating talent, I really enjoy the one class. You don’t end up with a watered down system.

“I think Michigan’s system sort of waters it down. They have four classes and that’s too many. One or two tops is the way to go.”

None of the class wrestling pundits are going to bite on this comment?  Last week, 30+ plus pages of debate, today nothing.  It's the Wednesday before Spring Break I could use some semi-entertainment....!

  16. Vito

I kind of get your thinking here but In this case. I think it is more the... act like a complete jerk and get my way, thinking that is

running ramped today. People are used to being able to say or do what ever they want. I for one am tired

of the person who eats half their meal and then screams about how bad it is. Just to try and get it for free.

Or the guy who talks crap and doesn't expect to get hit in the face. I for one and sick of these people.

I guess the boo at a High School kid guy falls into that category for me.

jchas, agreed but I would define that as a general lack of civility and common decency. I understand (and even appreciate) what TripleB and Newbie are trying to do, but is their sarcasm any less belittling than booing? In the end, cliche's ring true: treat others as you wish to be treated, act like you've been there before, there is no substitute for hard work, if it was easy everybody would do it....

jchas, I think you're joining the old man's cynic club :) I'll leave you with a quote from the Breakfast Club:

"C'mon Vern, the kids haven't changed, you have!"
