    infowrestling reacted to AJ in Great article about Muncie Central wrestler and his sister
    A story worth your time.  Cory is a great kid with a great heart...

    http://www.thestarpress.com/story/sports/high-school/2016/11/27/mni-1124-cory-cooper/94163276/

    MUNCIE, Ind. — From first through fifth grade, Cory Cooper was in the gifted program at Storer Elementary School. When the program shifted to another school, he noticed how sad some people at the school were to see it leave — and how different that reaction was when the special education program transferred to a different school in similar fashion.
    In Cory’s mind, everybody else had it backwards. The Storer community was hurt more by losing the special education program than his gifted program, he thought, because of people like his younger sister Madison, who is developmentally challenged.
    That was about seven years ago, and Cory’s mom, Terri, still remembers what her son said that day: “Wait a minute, you didn’t cry when my sister left, why would you cry when I leave? That’s who you’re missing out on, getting to know her.
    “I learn something from her every day. She doesn’t learn something from me every day.”
    Cory, now a Central senior with a bevy of academic opportunities, is a “top-notch,” wrestler, according to his coach, Mark Scott. And that’s the third-most impressive thing about him, Scott says, behind the 4.0 grade-point average and  his extensive involvement in unified sports so that he can hang out with his sister. “It’s just amazing to see an individual spend so much time with their sibling and care for her,” Scott said.
    After they were born 14 months apart, Terri would lay Cory and Madison on the couch as babies and they would wiggle closer to each other until they were touching. Madison couldn’t talk or walk until about five years ago, so Cory read books and tried to learn sign language and then teach her. They developed their own language.
    “When she couldn’t talk, he would come to me and say, ‘Maddie is hungry or Maddie is thirsty,’” Terri said. “And I’d be like, ‘No she’s not, how do you know?’ He’d say, ‘Because I just know.’ So I’d ask her, ‘Maddie are you thirsty?’ And she would nod. … They were just connected, he knew what she needed when she needed it.”
    Even as doctors predicted that Madison would never walk or talk, Cory remained steadfast in his belief that they were wrong. He would tell his mom, “(The doctors) don’t know, mom — I know.”
    About five years ago, Madison overcame her speech disability and motor issues and “came out of her shell,” Cory says. And Madison has made up for lost time; Cory says he can’t go down the hallway at school or around town without spotting her and saying hi, and he happily admits, “She’s way more popular than I am.”
    Cory has gotten creative with his schedule, typically arriving at Central between 6:30 and 7 a.m. each day to work on homework so that he has as much time as possible after school for wrestling and unified sports. He is involved in nearly as many unified sports (golf, volleyball, softball, bowling, track, swimming) as AP classes (English, statistics, calculus, government, economics, physics and biology).
    “Doctors told her she’d never be able to read, talk or walk, now she does all those things perfectly fine,” Cory said. “She’s an inspiration to me, really. I feel like if she can do stuff doctors said was impossible, I can make time out of my day to have fun with her.”
    Cory had been begging his parents to get involved with Special Olympics and unified sports since Madison was around 8 years old, and about two years ago, they finally relented. Now they can’t imagine life without it. There are some weeks in the summer that they will have some sort of combination of sports five days per week.
    Cory, who is coming off a close loss at wrestling semistate as a junior, is 5-0 on the mat this year for the Bearcats. With a 33 ACT and a weighted GPA of an estimated 4.5, Cory doesn’t plan on wrestling in college as he has his sights set on MIT or Yale. But ultimately, his mom predicts that he might stay close to home and attend Purdue instead — so he can stay close to Maddie and stay involved in unified sports.
    At church on a recent Sunday, the pastor called some of the younger people up to the front and asked them to share with the rest of the attendees what they were thankful for, since Thanksgiving was just a few days away. Some said their family, some said food.
    When it was Madison’s turn, she exclaimed, “Cory!”

    And what is even nicer is when you run tournaments or dual meets through TW, it automatically does it for you.  So it is mostly just being lazy if they use TW and don't post the results.  Just saying.

    You are correct, UncleJimmy, people can certainly hold back the results.  I was just saying with how easy TW has made reporting results it is crazy to think that people will hold the results.  I know for a fact that there are national ranking people who look at the results that are posted here.  That may be a little of the reason why "we" (Portage) are ranked #41 in the nation.  Though, I think they may have missed our 19 point win last year over this year's #11 team, but nevertheless you will never see me not post our results.

    It's nice to see that more and more people are posting their dual results here.......................but when are we going to get more Individual results? It would be awesome if everyone took the time to provide these...........I enjoy looking at them, and I know fans and wrestlers enjoy looking at them.....

    I think that our middle schools should try it. There is no doubt that we could get more middle schoolers to wrestle, if they do not have to wear singlets. I think that I will be pushing for this at the middle school level in my area. I think that we should start at that level here in Indiana. This little change could get more athletes out and grow our sport. My son would have many of his super athletic friends over on the weekend. They would goof around, put singlets on, and wrestle on our home mat. Those same friends would not put singlets on and wrestle at school. Some kids are just funny about that stuff at that age. Seems like when they get to high school, they lose that modesty and don't care. By then its hard to get them to get involved with our demanding sport (too hard).

    infowrestling reacted to Coach McCormick in IHSWCA Classed Team State Duals -- Brief Update on Facilities
    The Team State Duals planning committee traveled to Ft. Wayne recently to meet with Coliseum officials.  The committee did a walk-thru and discussed various event components and layout with the added hall/annex that will be utilized this season.

    Issues discussed with Coliseum personnel in finding solutions:

    1.  Team seating will be moved to the "inside" of the mat area; thereby not blocking the fans' view from the bleachers.
    2.  Additional restrooms will now be available due to the addition of the third hall/annex being utilized.
    3.  Coliseum personnel assured us that they would beef up their concession areas at the event.
    4.  With the new, added space, bleachers will be able to be telescoped out further; thereby offering much more seating this year.

    Teams/schools who will be providing mat(s) for this year's event:
    *  Garrett HS (1 mat)
    *  IN Tech (1 mat)
    *  Bellmont HS (2 mats)
    *  Adams Central (3 mats)
    *  Yorktown (3 mats)
    *  New Haven (1 mat)
    *  Still looking for 1 more mat

    Respectfully Submitted,

    We are actually ahead of the game at this point in time.
    I believe 29 of the 36 participating teams have signed and returned their contracts.  This is outstanding!

    JD, myself and likely a couple of other committee members, will be meeting with FW Coliseum management sometime in the next couple of months to look at set-up options with the added space that we have purchased for next year's event.

    Thank you,

    Can't say this enough. Also, if you are a parent, please watch your children during the day, or at least check on them. I don't know how many were sneaking off into back hallways, jumping on stuff they didn't need to be on without a parent in site. If you can't watch them, please find someone to watch them while you attend. It is out of courtesy and respect to the school, the ISWA staff and volunteers.

    I was coaching one of the last matches Saturday night in the main gym with the Cadets. I can't believe how much trash people leave sitting behind without putting it in a trash can. I know their are custodians paid to clean, but isn't it just common courtesy to throw your own mess away?

    Be more respectful of the things you have and don't forget where you came from.  Many of you don't realize the growth of the ISWA folkstyle state.  It has grown from a small tournament in a sports complex in Bloomington to the Mellancamp facility (with two restrooms)  to a dungeon industrial warehouse with leaky port 'o pottys to Lawrence Central  (jeeze that was a nightmare made space in a crowded subway look comfortable)  to two different weekends at two different schools to what we have now.  What we have now is by far the best.

    I only have one concern.  Using Warren Central is fantastic, plenty of space and bathrooms ect.  I'm worried that non respectful parents are going to ruin the ISWA's chance to continue to use the school.  Warren like most High schools is a tobacco free campus.  When I left on Saturday afternoon I noticed hundreds of cigarette butts laying on the ground outside the entrance.  It appears to me as if the staff and students take pride in their school.  If was the principal of Warren, that very well could be a deal breaker for me using my school.

    The ISWA does not always please everyone, but with over 2100 athletes along with their coaches and fans getting in and out of that place like it was done this weekend is a small miracle.

    So if we want to continue to keep using this facility, be respectful, pick up after yourself, dont scratch walls and break things, be careful and mindful that this public facility but the school corporation and administration staff has been kind enough to give the stamp of approval.  We are only there 2 days of the year the students are there for 180 and they obviously have a nice facility to be proud of.

    Yeah, I think that a random draw for each level could happen after conferences are completed. Then everyone would have at least a few days to plan for sectionals and 4 weeks to plan for state.

    We already draw a starting weight for dual meets........ would we be able to switch the starting weights for the individual portion of our State Tournament?

    I've had the opportunity to coach a few solid Heavyweights, and I always feel for those individuals, because they see the crowd start to thin by the time they get to wrestle.  I took a look at the Michigan Individual State Tournament, and it looks like they announce the starting weight ahead of time, and they do not go from lightest to heaviest.

    Just got email from Robert Faulkens and he informs me you guys have done a tremendous job on getting the latest Survey completed.  Says over 317 coaches have filled it out which would be the biggest turnout we have had that I can remember.  Thankyou for taking the time to do so.  Also anyone interested the IHSWCA is interested to travel to a few spots across the state this offseason for a coaches get together and we can bounce ideas off of one another and you can let me know what you think is a pressing need in our sport.  Kinda like a townhall meeting but cooler lol.

    Joe Caprino has volunteered to be the first stoping point and it looks like Mad Anthony or Joes house which ever works best will be the location.  Date is up in air as Y2 has another wrestler on the way.
