Some great Royals for sure. I was narrowing it down to 2 time qualifiers at minimum for "most accomplished", though all of these guys have an argument for "best" wrestler in HSE history. Spencer with only 1 medal, but that huge upset definitely crossed my mind.

Hadn't realized Farrell qualified his Junior year, he'd be up there for sure. His kids were no slouches either (JD took 3rd for the Tigers and then Crew was a 4 time Regional Champion at Frankton).

P-Rob is one of my favorite dudes in the sport, NCAA Qualifier at Purdue after his late blooming Senior year for the Royals.

Neibarger was awesome. Really fun, but as you mentioned only won one medal at HSE.

Pompei may qualify as most accomplished Royal in wrestling for career totality for sure when you add in his collegiate time and his coaching as well.

I wasn't here for it, but according to Coach Rypel here who got teched by him his freshman year, John Tatom was the best 160 pounder in the state his senior year before tearing up his knee. As it is, he also placed 6th once for HSE prior to his career ending injury.

Long story short, HSE has been way too good for way too long without having a champion. Gotta get that monkey off our back in the next 5 years.

As the Indiana high school wrestling season comes to an end…Just wanted to give a big shout out to all of the Indiana clubs and coaches. First generation wrestling family here. My boys were introduced to the sport by their uncle/cousin. Such a great sport and community! We have met so many great people and competitors. Blessed to have such a great community and support system. The boys have had club coaches from all over the state help in their corner multiple times w/ no ties to the boys whatsoever. Just there to support Indiana wrestling. Another big shout out to contenders and red cobra. Both have been home clubs w/ outstanding coaches and partners!! This forum and the wrestling community is outstanding.

    HSE has a few options:

Jack Chastain is the career wins leader and Qualified as a Sophomore, took 5th twice

Austin Holmes qualified 3 times and won 2 4th place medals his Sophomore and Junior year. He’s second all time in wins.

Matt Irick likely would have been the guy had he not been hurt his Junior year. 2 time qualifier, 5th placer.

Jake Simone was a headlock and a bad draw away from maybe being the guy: Sophomore year he’s ranked top 4 in state, Regional Champ, up 6-2 on David Pierson in ticket round, in on another single, the patented DP headlock takes him out. Junior year, wins 8th place medal, Senior year, ranked 4th, loses to Eldred of Westfield 2-1 in Regionals, Eldred takes 2nd that year to Seltzer, who you guessed it, was Simone’s ticket round match that year. Awful.

As it lays: Andrew Irick is likely the guy. 2 time medalist in his 3 years as a starter taking 4th as a Junior, runner-up his Senior year in 2020 after a Semi-state title.

Only 2 time qualifier since then has been Max Broom, who never medaled but is the career leader in falls and won more matches with only one move (cradle) than anyone I’ve ever seen.

Got a crop of 7th/8th graders that have as much if not more credentials coming in than any of those guys. Hoping for that first champ in the next few seasons

I admire the focus and dedication with Indiana’s year-round wrestlers and man, a couple of them are just on a whole other level. But I will admit it’s also pretty cool to see multi-sport athletes like Thrine under the lights. Particularly at a weight like 132. This is in no way a knock on specialization as kids should pursue whatever makes them happiest. I just meant it’s neat to occasionally see a kid with lots of wrestling success who plays other sports too.

My fams from New Castle, I’ve been a part of the program, and known @FCFIGHTER170 since he was a scrawny freshman so my opinion comes with some bias, but I remember saying to my brothers when the season started that Ty would have to go through Hockaday to win this year if he didn’t stay at 126.  I never doubted him.  Not once.  I personally felt if there was anyone from 126-138 that could beat JH, Tylin was it.  I don’t even think Leveall could do it (not to take anything away from KL).

that said, I also said (to my bros) that he’d have to wrestle an absolutely perfect match or hit a big unexpected move to beat JH.  JH is just on a different level than anyone else in Indiana right now and has lofty aspirations.

Tylins a superb athlete, a generational talent, if you will.  IMO, if he focused solely on wrestling, the gap probably wouldn’t have been what it was.  I’m sure I’m not the only one, Mew Castle community or otherwise, that thinks that. He continues to get better and wrestles very smart.  He may not blow guys out of the water but he doesn’t have to.  His best attribute, aside from just being a great person, is his ability to maintain his composure on the mat.  Even in the midst of the semifinal match with JH, he never seemed rattled.  Can’t wait to see what he does next year.

One of the most fun things about watching state is seeing those jaw-dropping moments where we realize a kid is WAY better than we expected.

You guys know this: if a kid comes from a school that doesn't wrestle a tough schedule, it's so hard to gauge how good they really are or how much progress they've made from the previous season. Most of the time, those shiny undefeated records from a weak schedule get exposed at semi-state and state. But once or twice a year, our jaws drop and we go, "Oh, crap. Kid leveled up. Dude's for real."

For me, there were 2 kids like that this year: Easton Doster and Noah Weaver

Neither of these guys was new on the scene. And both had some off-season success that could have suggested an upward trajectory. But there were other guys with glossy records like them, too, who turned out to be on a "regular" trajectory of slightly better than last year once they got thrown in the fire.

But when Doster hit that insane low single on Courtney that he could have hit on most D1 starters, it was an, "Oh crap. Dude's arrived" kind of moment. Then to see how slick he was both on attack and on defense the rest of that match on through the final against someone like Walker was super impressive. He is SO athletic and sharp and slick. Wow.

And Noah Weaver? Holy Andrew Howe, Batman. That kid's got some pace and heavy hands and hips and an engine that do not stop. Geez! To go from getting smashed by fellow underclassmen Cashman and Costello at 170 at semi-state and state in 2023 to being a 190 that runs circles around #2 McConnell and leads wire-to-wire over nationally ranked and Indiana #1 Henry? WOW. "Leveled up" would be the understatement of the weekend.

Mad, mad props to these two. It was so fun to watch them this weekend. Can't wait to see what they do next.

Didn’t want this to be known,  but now the cats out of the bag. The injury occurred again over the summer late. The choice was to fix it and miss the season or to tape it up and try to grind it and repair it after season. He chose to wrestle as it couldn’t get any worse and to get it fixed now (after season). With that said, it popped out and back in Friday night. It freaked him out. It was slipping all weekend. If he doesn’t set it when it slips, it can go all the way out. Long story short, he didn’t make it through his placement match and we were ok with what he accomplished this season.

With all of this said…  He has wrestled CP 4 times. Cruz twice and Will Clark twice. You guys never had a single drink during those losses. Never took injury against those monsters.

Lastly.. if you are questioning the toughness or integrity of my kid.. you have never met him or the rest of my family. We don’t roll like that. Feel free to call and discuss.

The author of this post @Chris Coopercan attest for how tough my boys are. My oldest wrestled for him one summer. Busted his eye wide open at Disney. We glued it shut with super glue 5 times to ensure Columbus East got 6 every round. He still rocks his scar with honor.

Proud of my son and proud of my state champs!!!

Crazy how the only hate in this site over the last few days is directed to the big three. That’s the world we live in now… 10 years ago all you would see is love for kids and hard work. We live in a society where people hate everyone and everything. It’s just sad!!!!

Not sure I want to go back to GA. Ticketmaster, you have 1 job, come on, figure it out. The school allotment idea seems good as long as AD's agree to do it. Once again I am reminded how different Wrestling is to the other sports which adds some complexity that needs addressed.

One thing I do know, no way would I want to be security with GA. Don't think you could pay me enough to do it. You are either playing favorites, a jerk, too strict, too leninant or some combination of all the above. Been there done that...

People can look at it as CP blew it, but why not look at it as the state of Indiana is strong as a whole. The talent levels over the past decade has exploded in our state, and we are seeing it in the national and college level as well.

The problem isn't assign seating its how they sold the tickets. They just need to come up with a better system to allow groups to have seats together. To be honest and I could be wrong but it didn't seam like there was a big issue of groups getting to sit together but I was only one section. It also seemed like the assigned seating was just a guideline as it was easy to move to a section that had empty seats. If we went back to general admission I don't see the beef up security happening the way you envisioned. Yea some sections might be ran well but I don't see them being able to get enough quality workers to make it run smoothly. I personally like the idea or knowing you'll have the same seats no matter when you get in line. I've actually have gotten to enjoyed lunch the last couple of years not having to rush back to make sure I'm early enough just to get to the section I've been all weekend and see all the seats saved. I don't want to have to have hopes that the workers are there to enforce no seat saving. Like I said they just need to fix the ticket process.

They need to let the schools sell tickets in allotments. I bought tickets from the school for the football championship game as they were cheaper than Ticketmaster. This would hopefully get the qualifiers supporters good seating. These should be offered earlier than other tickets. Then have lower sections still available to be reserved & upper levels be general admission.
