Let’s limit seating , but hey you can all go to Walmart and shop no problem. The average Wal Mart superstore has 10,000 car visits a day according info I see.  No biggie those superstores are just safer than sitting in a stadium.

That is because Elmo and Cookie Monster Adult pajamas are known to deflect any type of virus known to man.  I am pretty sure this info is in the people of walmart.com handbook!

  2. While I don't personally speak for Evan, I can say without hesitation that his decision to change weight classes was an unselfish one in order to effectively give an opportunity for Friday Night glory to a fellow teammate.  Evan has never ran away from tough competition.  From the time Evan was little, his father was constantly seeking tougher tournaments in order to challenge his son. Evan wanted a chance to wrestle Silas, and in fact knew that moving to 220 would appear as a sign of weakness.  I'm sure the decision weighed heavy on his mind, because deep down he knew how this might possibly be viewed.  However, he did what he felt was best for his teammate and regardless of how anyone else sees it, those of us who have watched him grow in this sport know that his sacrifice for his teammate is more important to him than anyone's opinions on a chat board.

  4. So I was bored at work and did some research on the 2017 138 bracket (maybe with some motivation, I'll research the rest of the brackets).

    Here is what I found:

2017 Northern Qualifier (29 participants) - Of the 12 who qualified, 9 came to the Championship in same weight class
Southern Qualifier  (12 participants) - All automatically qualified, 5 participated in same weight class

2018 Northern Qualifier had 15 participants.
2018 Southern Qualifier had 10 Participants.
Indy Nationals had 22 participants this year (I might be off 1-2 wrestlers).  Some also wrestled in both the Qualifier and Nationals.

Comparing participation data, it appears overall there were more wrestlers in 2018 vs 2017 (Which you would expect as this event gains traction).

So how did 2017 participants fair in placement and what was their original seeding:

    Top 8 2017 Frosh/Soph - 138lb - 24 Participants

    1.  SSQ - 138 - Sophmore
    2.  SSQ - 138 - Sophmore
    3.  5th Northern Qualifier- Sophmore
    4.  SSQ - 132 - Sophmore
    5.  DNP Northern Qualifier - Freshman
    6.  SSQ - 132 - Sophmore
    7.  SSQ - 138 - Sophmore
    8.  5th Southern Qualifier - Sophmore

So 5 out of the Top 8 were Semi-State Qualifiers (not a big surprise here).

Of the 24 participants, 19 Participated in the 138 lb class for either SS or their qualifier.

5 Participants came from 132 lb weight classes for the Frosh/Soph Championship.  3 of which were SSQ, 1 got first in the qualifier and the other got 4th.

    Last bit of information:

There were 19 Freshman/Sophmore's in 2017 who made Semi-State, of those only 8 went on to wrestle in the Frosh/Sophmore Championship (3 placed at IHSAA State and were not eligible).  Two wrestled in the 145lb class.  So in total 10/19 wrestled in the Frosh/Soph Championship who qualified via Semi-State.

It' my understanding  wrestlers will get 4 pounds growth plus 2 pounds. Weigh i  with singlet and shoes.

From looking at the event flyer, they get 4 pounds Saturday morning (shoes and singlet) and an additional 2 pounds on weigh outs Saturday night, with optional weigh-ins Sunday morning (Top 12 in each weight class move onto Sunday).

  6. Chesterton's V2 team basically wrestled in four tournaments

Yeah, but the semi state is in East Chicago not Merrillville.

Just drove from Merrillville to Whiting (hence through East Chicago), then back to Merrillville............still alive.  Roads weren't the greatest, especially on Cline Ave North of 80/94.  Snow is supposed to stop around 6pm, I'm sure things will be fine.

Is there a backup plan for the Portage qualifier due to weather? And if it is called, when will that happen?

Does anybody have any clarification on how Indy Nationals will work as a qualifier? What if your wrestler does not wrestle any Indiana Frosh/sophs since its HS division?

I would be shocked if it was cancelled.  The snow is supposed to stop at 6 today and while the roads aren't the best, I am sure they will be cleared up enough by Sunday.

Completely agree about losing the middle of the road kids. The kids that are balls deep and all in are the ones that love the sport and are going to keep on keeping on. We have to keep it appealing to the kids that are multi-sport athletes and kids that maybe "like wrestling" but haven't fallen in love with it yet. I was always football first, but my football coaches encouraged me to wrestle. I stuck with it after getting beat on as a frosh/soph and then it became a lot more fun and I fell in love with it when I started to make that jump and be the one hammer instead of the nail. Keeping kids interested until they start to have success is harder and harder because everyone wants things handed to them. That's one of the great lessons of wrestling is that you aren't entitled to anything.

This is a very valid point, especially with this "want it now" generation.  I'll never forget my oldest son's first wrestling tournament in the 6th grade.  His first match he got pinned in 25 seconds and his second match he lost 17-2 and he didn't earn either of his two points.  I remember telling myself, dang, maybe this sport isn't for him as he was always successful in baseball and football.  Then one of our coaches calmed me down and said focus on development vs. results.

Fast forward a year later and now I'm heavily involved with our club.  I decided that I would make it my personal mission to set reasonable expectations for parents new to wrestling in all the parent meetings I held for our club.

Let's be honest, kids recover from losses much easier than we think.  By the end of the day, my son was laughing on his xbox with all his friends, while I was deeply contemplating why I got him into the sport to begin with.

I believe the key to growth in the sport is to get involved in other sports (especially in small towns), go help coach pop warner or baseball and grab those committed parents/kids and bring them into the sport.  Then the next step is the most crucial.  YOU MUST DISCUSS REASONABLE EXPECTATIONS WITH PARENTS NEW TO THE SPORT.  Here are some things we cover in our club for new parents:

    1.  Expect to lose matches and probably a lot of them, especially if you start at an older age (I know I'll get roasted by some, but truth is very few come out of the gates winning everything).

    2.  Set aside your ego for the development of your wrestler - Demand not wins vs losses, but instead fight and aggressiveness.

    3.  Get involved - volunteer your time, come help coach during practices even if you know nothing about the sport, become a sponge, get copper certificed, etc.

    4.  Mat time - get your son to as many tournaments as possible, regardless of the outcomes.  Keep encouraging him to compete.

    5.  Remember, wrestling is and always will be deeper than wins and losses, if you remain focused on this one point, your son/daughter can't lose.

I know that all seems mushy, but this is the generation we live in.  Instead of complaining about "soft" kids, how about we take their strengths and develop them.

  11. 106 - Moran, Cruz, Diaz, Reagan
113 - Moreno, Diaz, Tolin, Hegedus (could argue for Hegedus,Tolin as well).

132 - Bryant, Rodriguez, Betourne, Taylor

152 - Washington, Lamore, Calhoun, Ruble
160 - Lemley, Kasch, Hoover, Kensinger
170 -- Fattore, Bates, Brown, Traficanti (Crary/Bates could go either way, but Bates is wrestling lights out, I like those hot streaks).
182 - Girgenti, Potosky, Lockett, Sneed
195 - Davison, Fowler, Schoonveld, Hurley
220 - Streck, Thomas, Lewis Mochen
285 - Pokorney, McWilliams, Faulkner, Atria

Portage finishes with 5 Champs, Chesterton with 4.

    126 - Braxton Alexander / Colin Poynter
    132 - Shawn Hollis / Reese Rodriguez
    138 - Ahzsur Ursery / Ian Dembowski
    145 - Looks fairly balanced (maybe Douglass/Pack?)
    152 - Aaron Griggs / Noah Lamore
    160 - Dante Colza / Diego Lemley
    170 - Marc Buehler / Zach Fattore
182 - You fill in the blanks
195 - Jacob Bondon / Lucas Davison (Bondon has had an amazing season)
220 - You fill in the blanks
    285 - Donnie Crider / Alex Faulkner

Winland has beaten Nisley twice by a point or 2 and at DAC Nisley beat Winland 10-1. Nisley also beat D Taylor 10-4 at Sectionals. Nisley and Ferry has both beaten each other once so This will be an interesting bracket. This is one of those weight classes where they all take turns beating each other.

He also beat him 3-2 at the Region Rumble, preseason I realize, but a match none the less. Outside of Tyson's lopsided win, their matches have been very close and I expect nothing less.  It's definitely one of those weight classes that could go in several different directions.  This is why we don't wrestle on paper!  The excitement is brewing!

That's some good insight.     I like your points.   Last year there was a HBO real sports segment on specialized sports.    It emphasized and foucused on some travel baseball parents but it did hit on volleyball, softball, tennis and other sports.   It just demonstrated how much parents invest their vacation time,  money and everything else into the sports.     There take away was that sports tourism is a billion dollar industry, parents are putting  money, vacation time and blood sweat and tears into the sports.   Communities are dropping millions into facilities to get the sports parents to their site and the sports tourism $.   They interviewed a community leader in Westfield about building grand park.  If people don't know,  Grand Park in Westfield is one of the largest sports facilities in the country with 26 baseball/softball fields and over 20 soccer/football fields.  They spent over 14 Million on it.

The parents plainly said the main reason they did it was to have their kid keep up competitively with the other kid at the high school or wherever.    The problem was that more and more parents cant invest time and money to keep up with the next kid doing travel sports, so they give up. Real Sports noted that overall, sports participation is significantly down as a result of this phenomenon.

My boys have played at Grand Park and I believe someone said they actually haven't made any money in three years, although I'm sure they will long term.  The cost factor is huge, especially for parents with multiple kids.

The cost of being competitive in sports is simply ridiculous in the grand scheme of things

    1.  Club fees for my three boys - $300
    2.  Private academy fees - $230 (this will increase if we start doing privates and camps)
    3.  Weekend club tournaments - $600 (estimated and doesn't include Greco/freestyle)
    4.  Hotel fees - $460 (Estimated, including trips to Indy twice, Iowa and Battle Creek)
    5.  Travel Baseball cost ($750 for 10U, $1000 for 13U)
    6.  Estimated Hotel for baseball ($500 and this is cheap because both my boys play at the same out of town place twice, which isn't always the case)
    7.  Pop Warner - $250
    8.  And I'm not even including the stupidity that I have to pay to walk into any of these sporting events to watch my own kid play in a sport I've paid for them to play in.  Nor does it include food, gas, fund raising (which I almost always just end up paying for), etc.

Grand Total :  $4090 and I'm sure I'm missing a crap ton of other expenses since these are quick rough estimates.  In fact we actually budget $400 per month for sports.  I could be driving my dream car right now after a few years!!!

And you're right, many parents can't afford the time commitment or the financial commitment so that drives people from the sport(s) as well.  It also creates a lack of local pride, meaning that kids travel to play in other elite clubs or baseball teams because they are more competitive or in some cases because dad can't get along with a coach.

  14. This subject will be debated for years and years to come.  I coach in our club, as well as pop warner and one of my sons travel baseball teams (yes I'm crazy).  All three of my boys (9th, 7th and 5th grade) have been playing football and baseball since they were 5 and started wresting 3 years ago.  It's tough from a competitive standpoint to push them to the highest level when other kids are getting more swings in or more mat time or going to various year round football camps.  As a parent, at some point, you have to start making tough decisions regarding year round sport activity, not just from a progression standpoint but let's not forget a financial one as well.  I've seen many travel baseball players slowly walk away from the sport around the age of 13/14 and its been discussed in great length in the baseball community that part of this reason is because they simply start to lose their passion for the sport.  Some of these youth baseball teams are playing 70-90 games during the season, which is insane.

However, wrestling seems to be a sport where only the passionate survive.  You can't really force a kid into wrestling as it typically doesn't end well.  Because of this, I honestly don't see wrestlers losing their passion as quickly as a baseball player might, not to mention that baseball is probably the biggest self esteem destroying sport out there from a statistic stand point.

College recruiters have also said they prefer multi sport athletes, but that can be misleading, because they aren't recruiting mediocrity either.

The real problem here are parents:  Parents have this crazy notion that their son/daughter should always be at the same level as Johnnie down the street.  Truth is, Johnnie matured earlier, has better muscle tone and at the age of 13 is done growing.  Kids develop at different rates, regardless if they practice year round or not.

Year round wrestling isn't pushing people from the sport, parents are.

    126-Kelly, Gomez, Crague, Layman
    132-Hollis, Winland, C. Taylor, Nisley
    138-Dembowski, Burford, Johnson, Mohmed
145-Ellis, Park, Hollendoner, Bridegroom (I have Brock taking this one)

    220-Jeeninga, Simpkins, Mochen, Tillema
    285-Pokorney, Foster, Austgen, Rodriguez

This will be a close team race, I have Chesterton edging Crown Point by a few.  Possible 3 state champs from this regional.

    Here are my 2 cents.

Bolin and Carter have battled several times and I believe the series is tied 3-3 in recent matches, with each wrestler seeming to alternate wins, Bolin lost the last time, so if history repeats itself.....

Craque beat Layman 6-1, although Layman just came off an injury and is now back to 100 percent, will be a lot closer this time.

Winland beat C. Taylor 7-4 in regular season and has beaten Nisley 3/4 times they have wrestled recently.

Johnson should be able to beat Mohmed if we use the common opponent thought process, but this is why we don't wrestle on paper.

Beckman has been wrestling really well lately and his momentum should carry him into the finals.

  16. It's crazy the kind of things we do as parents once our kids get involved in something.  I dabbled with wrestling in high school, but coming from a small school in Ohio, there wasn't much push back then.  So when my kids started wrestling a few years ago, I wasn't exactly sure what we were committing to.  Now that they have shown great interest and are starting to have some success, I've become that crazy wrestling dad too.  Fast forward to now and I'm like a sponge, listening to everything our club coaches say, learning as much as possible, getting bronze and copper certified, etc.  Heck, even somehow got volunteered to serve on our club board.

This sport is amazing and I'm so glad my 3 boys have decided to be involved.

Thanks for posting this thread............much needed reminder that we all come from different places, but in the end our love and passion for this sport is what drives us!

  17. Chesterton was nursing a few injuries, nothing to worry about.

Evan Bates stepped in just fine for Girgenti and Brock Ellis wrestled well against Mcintosh.  Portage looked pretty unstoppable.

No Idea on Rumph.  Rumor had it, they bumped almost everyone in class.
