  1. That is because Elmo and Cookie Monster Adult pajamas are known to deflect any type of virus known to man. I am pretty sure this info is in the people of walmart.com handbook!
  2. While I don't personally speak for Evan, I can say without hesitation that his decision to change weight classes was an unselfish one in order to effectively give an opportunity for Friday Night glory to a fellow teammate. Evan has never ran away from tough competition. From the time Evan was little, his father was constantly seeking tougher tournaments in order to challenge his son. Evan wanted a chance to wrestle Silas, and in fact knew that moving to 220 would appear as a sign of weakness. I'm sure the decision weighed heavy on his mind, because deep down he knew how this might possibly be viewed. However, he did what he felt was best for his teammate and regardless of how anyone else sees it, those of us who have watched him grow in this sport know that his sacrifice for his teammate is more important to him than anyone's opinions on a chat board.
  3. So I was bored at work and did some research on the 2017 138 bracket (maybe with some motivation, I'll research the rest of the brackets). Here is what I found: 2017 Northern Qualifier (29 participants) - Of the 12 who qualified, 9 came to the Championship in same weight class Southern Qualifier (12 participants) - All automatically qualified, 5 participated in same weight class 2018 Northern Qualifier had 15 participants. 2018 Southern Qualifier had 10 Participants. Indy Nationals had 22 participants this year (I might be off 1-2 wrestlers). Some also wrestled in both the Qualifier and Nationals. Comparing participation data, it appears overall there were more wrestlers in 2018 vs 2017 (Which you would expect as this event gains traction). So how did 2017 participants fair in placement and what was their original seeding: Top 8 2017 Frosh/Soph - 138lb - 24 Participants 1. SSQ - 138 - Sophmore 2. SSQ - 138 - Sophmore 3. 5th Northern Qualifier- Sophmore 4. SSQ - 132 - Sophmore 5. DNP Northern Qualifier - Freshman 6. SSQ - 132 - Sophmore 7. SSQ - 138 - Sophmore 8. 5th Southern Qualifier - Sophmore So 5 out of the Top 8 were Semi-State Qualifiers (not a big surprise here). Of the 24 participants, 19 Participated in the 138 lb class for either SS or their qualifier. 5 Participants came from 132 lb weight classes for the Frosh/Soph Championship. 3 of which were SSQ, 1 got first in the qualifier and the other got 4th. Last bit of information: There were 19 Freshman/Sophmore's in 2017 who made Semi-State, of those only 8 went on to wrestle in the Frosh/Sophmore Championship (3 placed at IHSAA State and were not eligible). Two wrestled in the 145lb class. So in total 10/19 wrestled in the Frosh/Soph Championship who qualified via Semi-State.
  4. From looking at the event flyer, they get 4 pounds Saturday morning (shoes and singlet) and an additional 2 pounds on weigh outs Saturday night, with optional weigh-ins Sunday morning (Top 12 in each weight class move onto Sunday).

  6. When will they import the qualifiers from last weekend? After Indy nationals?
  7. http://www.trackwrestling.com/registration/BasicPreReg1.jsp?tournamentGroupId=287225009&TIM=1518274453349&twSessionId=ghbvputbzflulzy That's a link to the South Qualifier, which I'm assuming is where you will be going. Here's the Northern Qualifier if you like road trips: http://www.trackwrestling.com/registration/BasicPreReg1.jsp?tournamentGroupId=286131009&TIM=1518274453349&twSessionId=ghbvputbzflulzy
  8. Just drove from Merrillville to Whiting (hence through East Chicago), then back to Merrillville............still alive. Roads weren't the greatest, especially on Cline Ave North of 80/94. Snow is supposed to stop around 6pm, I'm sure things will be fine.
  9. I would be shocked if it was cancelled. The snow is supposed to stop at 6 today and while the roads aren't the best, I am sure they will be cleared up enough by Sunday.
  10. Easily made it from Chesterton to Merrillville this morning for work, smooth sailing around 50mph on good ole Route 30. I wouldn't get your panties in a bunch about the weather just yet!
  11. This is a very valid point, especially with this "want it now" generation. I'll never forget my oldest son's first wrestling tournament in the 6th grade. His first match he got pinned in 25 seconds and his second match he lost 17-2 and he didn't earn either of his two points. I remember telling myself, dang, maybe this sport isn't for him as he was always successful in baseball and football. Then one of our coaches calmed me down and said focus on development vs. results. Fast forward a year later and now I'm heavily involved with our club. I decided that I would make it my personal mission to set reasonable expectations for parents new to wrestling in all the parent meetings I held for our club. Let's be honest, kids recover from losses much easier than we think. By the end of the day, my son was laughing on his xbox with all his friends, while I was deeply contemplating why I got him into the sport to begin with. I believe the key to growth in the sport is to get involved in other sports (especially in small towns), go help coach pop warner or baseball and grab those committed parents/kids and bring them into the sport. Then the next step is the most crucial. YOU MUST DISCUSS REASONABLE EXPECTATIONS WITH PARENTS NEW TO THE SPORT. Here are some things we cover in our club for new parents: 1. Expect to lose matches and probably a lot of them, especially if you start at an older age (I know I'll get roasted by some, but truth is very few come out of the gates winning everything). 2. Set aside your ego for the development of your wrestler - Demand not wins vs losses, but instead fight and aggressiveness. 3. Get involved - volunteer your time, come help coach during practices even if you know nothing about the sport, become a sponge, get copper certificed, etc. 4. Mat time - get your son to as many tournaments as possible, regardless of the outcomes. Keep encouraging him to compete. 5. Remember, wrestling is and always will be deeper than wins and losses, if you remain focused on this one point, your son/daughter can't lose. I know that all seems mushy, but this is the generation we live in. Instead of complaining about "soft" kids, how about we take their strengths and develop them.
  12. It is $25 and I believe the cut off for registration is 10pm on Saturday via Trackwrestling.
  13. Completely agree, just because he is a freshman doesn't mean he hasn't been on the big stage before. I still like Turley vs. Ellis in the ticket round.
  14. 106 - Moran, Cruz, Diaz, Reagan 113 - Moreno, Diaz, Tolin, Hegedus (could argue for Hegedus,Tolin as well). 120 - Triana, Peele, Bautista, Kaiser 126 - Poynter, Gomez, Kelley, Demien 132 - Bryant, Rodriguez, Betourne, Taylor 138 - Rumph, Dembowski, Davis, Burford 145 - McIntosh, Ellis, Laplace, Cervantes 152 - Washington, Lamore, Calhoun, Ruble 160 - Lemley, Kasch, Hoover, Kensinger 170 -- Fattore, Bates, Brown, Traficanti (Crary/Bates could go either way, but Bates is wrestling lights out, I like those hot streaks). 182 - Girgenti, Potosky, Lockett, Sneed 195 - Davison, Fowler, Schoonveld, Hurley 220 - Streck, Thomas, Lewis Mochen 285 - Pokorney, McWilliams, Faulkner, Atria Portage finishes with 5 Champs, Chesterton with 4. Here is a fun talking point and always subjective: Toughest Draws in bracket relating to punching your ticket (Tough Draw/Predicted Winner): 106 - Jace Alexander / Martin Cruz 113 - Evan Light / Jose Diaz 120 - Eli Hickman / Brock Peele 126 - Braxton Alexander / Colin Poynter 132 - Shawn Hollis / Reese Rodriguez 138 - Ahzsur Ursery / Ian Dembowski 145 - Looks fairly balanced (maybe Douglass/Pack?) 152 - Aaron Griggs / Noah Lamore 160 - Dante Colza / Diego Lemley 170 - Marc Buehler / Zach Fattore 182 - You fill in the blanks 195 - Jacob Bondon / Lucas Davison (Bondon has had an amazing season) 220 - You fill in the blanks 285 - Donnie Crider / Alex Faulkner
  15. He also beat him 3-2 at the Region Rumble, preseason I realize, but a match none the less. Outside of Tyson's lopsided win, their matches have been very close and I expect nothing less. It's definitely one of those weight classes that could go in several different directions. This is why we don't wrestle on paper! The excitement is brewing!
  16. My boys have played at Grand Park and I believe someone said they actually haven't made any money in three years, although I'm sure they will long term. The cost factor is huge, especially for parents with multiple kids. The cost of being competitive in sports is simply ridiculous in the grand scheme of things 1. Club fees for my three boys - $300 2. Private academy fees - $230 (this will increase if we start doing privates and camps) 3. Weekend club tournaments - $600 (estimated and doesn't include Greco/freestyle) 4. Hotel fees - $460 (Estimated, including trips to Indy twice, Iowa and Battle Creek) 5. Travel Baseball cost ($750 for 10U, $1000 for 13U) 6. Estimated Hotel for baseball ($500 and this is cheap because both my boys play at the same out of town place twice, which isn't always the case) 7. Pop Warner - $250 8. And I'm not even including the stupidity that I have to pay to walk into any of these sporting events to watch my own kid play in a sport I've paid for them to play in. Nor does it include food, gas, fund raising (which I almost always just end up paying for), etc. Grand Total : $4090 and I'm sure I'm missing a crap ton of other expenses since these are quick rough estimates. In fact we actually budget $400 per month for sports. I could be driving my dream car right now after a few years!!! And you're right, many parents can't afford the time commitment or the financial commitment so that drives people from the sport(s) as well. It also creates a lack of local pride, meaning that kids travel to play in other elite clubs or baseball teams because they are more competitive or in some cases because dad can't get along with a coach.
